18 Century Farmhouse, garden & heated pool, own vineyard, South Luberon Provence

Updated: 06-Dec-2016
4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, farmhouse, sleeps 8-10, floor area 250m2,12mx6m pool,

Le Sautaire is a traditional Provencal farmhouse carefully restored, spacious and cool. It provides ample accommodation for 8 to 10 people, with four spacious double bedrooms, two salons, two studies and a fully equipped kitchen with a Lacanche stove. It is has an acre of mature garden, surrounded by 20 acres of its own vines, set in a peaceful valley. Terraces around the house give panoramic views of Mte Ste Victoire and the Luberon. The garden offers seating in sun and shade, with places to escape to read a book or snooze. Swim or lounge around the 12mx6m heated pool edged with wide wooden decking, set in the garden overlooking the vines. .

The house is light and airy with views of countryside in all directions. The through kitchen, dining, sitting room is the hub of the house with French windows leading onto the south terrace with a table seating a dozen, a place for everyone to gather. A sweeping staircase takes you to the four bedrooms which lead off the upper salon all having high beamed ceilings. Each is furnished with French and English country antiques, but modern beds and shower rooms! Traditional thick walls and shutters keep the house cool in the hottest summers.

The house is situated in the Luberon National Park in the midst of an area of charming chateaux, medieval villages, Provençal markets and cultural activities. It is a beautiful part of the world, backed by the Luberon with its fine walking, a rolling countryside of vineyards, long views and the amazing light of Provence.

Grambois, an unspoilt 14th century 'village perché', is within walking distance with a boulangerie, mini-market and cafe-bar, whilst the hamlet of Moulin de Pas at the foot of the hill has a boulangerie, greengrocer and pharmacy, and the Grambois ‘cave’ with a good selection of wines – try the merlot rosé, it will include some of our grapes. . The local town of Pertuis, a 15 minutes’ drive, offers a full range of shops including two hypermarkets.

The Luberon villages of Lourmarin, Bonnieux and Gordes and towns of Apt and Forcalquier all have a typical French ambience. Aix en Provence and Avignon make pleasant day trips.

We provide details of local activities, the Provençal markets, one locally every day; restaurants, with guidance to quality and price; activities for children; sports and cultural events. At Le Sautaire you will find leaflets about local events, guidebooks and maps to plan your walking or visits. We have produced information sheets on favourite places with one a tour of local vineyards for degustation.

We renovated Le Sautiare for our retirement and manage to spend a week a month there throughout the year. So you will find a much loved house equipper for family living.

Other people have loved it too:

We had a fantastic time... and love the house and setting. We loved the fabulous views towards Mnt Sainte Victoire.. wonderful in the evening with a glass of wine! and the garden is lovely, particularly the perfect mixture of shade and sun. Sally August 2013

As keen cooks and foodies, we really appreciated your very well equipped kitchen.. we had some wonderful family meals, usually after visiting the markets, the St Martin de Brasque Sunday market and Aix were our highlights. Sara August 2013

We all loved the garden particularly (and seeing a deer in it one morning!). The children loved the different secret sitting places and the way land wrapped around the house. Everyone loved the pool design and said it was the best ever. Martha (2 1/2 and Hadrien (3) played for hours in the baby version! And it was big enough for competitions for teenage boys and Fergus (10) who tries to be one! Ros July 2013

I just wanted to let you know that we had the most wonderful stay at Le Sautaire and thank you for all your advice and information about the area and house which was very helpful.

We have fallen in love with the house, which is beautiful and the surrounding area too. The children are already asking me to book it again for next year! Everything was perfect, from the amazing kitchen to the fantastic gardens and mouthwatering figs! Not forgetting the local wine and wonderful food from the markets.

Beautiful Le Sautaire

Beautiful Le Sautaire

We were visiting Provence over the Summer to attend a wedding. Le Sautaire is beautiful. It is a warm and fun home, while being spacious and private. It has an amazing kitchen to create meals from all the fresh produce you collect from the local town markets. I thoroughly enjoyed eating and drinking the local wines al fresco. The weather was perfect which enabled us to take advantage of the huge, stunning swimming pool. Le Sautaire is perfect for all ages, families or a group of friends. Thank you Brian and Jenny!

Seven visits and counting to our favorite place in Provence

  • 5 of 5

We’ve been lucky enough to visit Sautaire for seven holidays and we plan to return for many more. The location is perfect. The Lower Luberon is our favorite area of Provence. We initially used Sautaire as our hub to explore Provence. From the house, we travelled to Nice to sample socca, Arles for the magnificent markets & Roman remains, Avignon to tour the famous walled city and soak in the history and the Camargue to view the pink flamingos parading with the wild buffalos. All were awesome and memorable experiences.

However, the one constant on each trip was Sautaire – the house. Our trips become progressively smaller in scope to ensure we spend as much time as possible in the place that has become our true home away from home. Our most treasured experiences from any trip are always the times at the house: playing petanque while having a pastis or two, cooking (our version of) Provencal meals with ingredients purchased that morning at one of the many local markets, a fire in the oh-so comfortable living area when it gets a bit cool.

The house – and its environs – are the reason we’ve returned seven times and the reason we continue to dream about our next trip. The setup is perfect for a family, multiple families or even (as we are) two couples. The kitchen is exactly what you envision for the Provencal farmhouse – hell, a whole lot better. The master suite looks over the vineyards (what a way to wake up). And the hospitality from Jenny & the house managers results in the perfect Provence trip.

A wonderful place for a holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Le Sautaire. The weather was pretty near perfect

Le Sautaire is the best property we have ever rented (and we have rented 10 in either SW or S France over the past 19 years). The house itself is lovely, full of character and spacious enough for all 8 of us never to feel cramped. Not that we spent much time in the house. The gardens are beautiful and the views to south, west and north spectacular. There were plenty of places to sit in either full sun or shade and also places to eat. The pool is huge and we had such fun with our 26 year old ‘kids’ recreating all the silly games they used to play when children.

We loved the area too, although we were far too busy relaxing or playing around the pool to go out that much. Walking to Grambois early in the morning for bread and croissants and joining the old men in Café Dol for a coffee before returning was a delight. Grambois is such a sleepy little place. We also joined the locals for a pizza in Café Dol on the middle Sunday evening, eating huge ‘sharing’ pizzas with our fingers. The lady at La Fontaine in St Martin de la Brasque was so helpful we had dinner there twice. We liked St Martin de la Brasque simply because it is so unassuming. We thoroughly recommend a visit to the local cave, Les Coteaux de Grambois where the ladies were helpful and ‘le vin en vrac’ perfectly drinkable and just around E2.00 per litre. Despite being very lazy for all of the two weeks we did get to visit Aix-en-Provence which we liked but which was too busy and hot to spend too long there. Apt market was great and not to be missed as much because the drive there is across such beautiful country. We also went to the smaller markets at Cadenet and Tours d’Aigues; just such fun to sit with coffee or beer watching everyone after walking around. We liked Cucuron very much; agree with your comment that Lourmarin is spoiled (although Anne did like some of the products in the little shops) and wished we had had an additional week to get to visit more places.

So thank you Jenny and Brian. We had a great time and loved every moment of it.

Owner's Response: Mike, Thank you for such a warm and positive review. We love Le Sautaire and are very happy when other people appreciate it as we do. You also got to know the area well by the sound of it. It is full of character(s), both the little villages along the Luberon and the people who live there. It is still a very unspoiled part of Provence. There are many more places to see so we look forward to a further visit from you sometime in the future.

Idyllic family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful property, spacious, full of character, stunning views and wildlife. Fabulous pool, great for a family gathering with our 10-13 year olds. Enjoyed the lazy lunches en famille but loved the sense of space and privacy the house also affords. Thank you for all your help Jenny in planning the trip and detailed information. We wanted to rebook immediately.

Owner's Response: Anya, Delighted that you and all your family enjoyed the holiday so much, there is plenty of space at Le Sautaire for three generations to spend time together. Very pleased that you are coming again in 2016. There are lots more places to discover and visit and the big pool will still be there in the garden!

Owner's Response: Thanks Sue, I am glad you found the information useful, we don't want visitors to miss out on interesting local places and activities. We love the garden and the view. Coming again but in June or July you would enjoy a 'river of lavender' which edges the lawn with the outline of Mnte Ste Victorie beyond it.

Golden wedding celebration

  • 5 of 5

We had our Golden Wedding celebration here in July 2013 with all the children & partners and grandchildren. Our ages ranged from 2 - 86 years! We cannot praise it too highly. The property is stunning with comfortable rooms and we particularly enjoyed the cleverly landscaped gardens with 'individual' places to sit and read, or play boules. We had a week of near perfect weather and ate almost every meal outside. We loved the swimming pool, which was a great length for serious swimmers, and with the 'baby' pool alongside where the little people could play in safety. The teenagers went canoeing and rock climbing and had great fun at Lac St.Croix. We went to local villages for attractive markets. We had plenty of drivers so took it in turns to do the morning croissant run. The whole property has a lovely feel of a relaxed family house with a modern touch of good Wi-Fi connections! Accurately described and we would recommend it wholeheartedly.

Owner's Response: We are delighted Ros and her family enjoyed their stay. Our spacious house and large garden has welcomed many three generation groups with room and activities for all. It is special enough to mark an important celebration. The baby pool is a particular attraction for families with small children, for a safe and happy holiday.
