Skiing and Cycling in the Oisans: Oz is fully integrated into the huge Alpe d'Huez ski area with around 250km of pistes. This is one of the highest ski resorts in Europe with a snow-sure and sunny aspect. There are runs for all abilities and access from Oz to all kinds of slopes is both quick and convenient via two high speed gondolas.Queuing is rare even at peak times.
Our region is famous for having some of the best road cycling routes in Europe. Legendary mountain cols such as the Galibier, Glandon, Croix de Fer and Lautaret are on the doorstep while the Telegraphe and La Madeleine are a step further. We have secure storage for bikes and can arrange rental bikes for those that do not bring their own. These range from the relatively modest to full Carbon frames, etc. Bring your own pedals and they will be fitted. Mountain biking is also well catered for here with many marked trails. In the summer season the ski lifts are open and have been specially designed to carry bikes as well as people up the mountain.
Family activities in the SUMMER: We are often asked what is there for children to do by parents concerned that they will be stuck in the middle of rural France with nothing for the children to do.
Its not like that here, there are so many things to do for adults and children of all ages.
Oz has a Kamikaze park which features zip lining in the trees. On Lac Verney, just below Le Chateau, there are dinghies, windsurfers pedaloes and canoes. On local rivers there is rafting, tubing, canyoning and kayaking. Activities like Archery and Tennis are well organized along with a children's creche. Mini golf for budding masters or players up for a challenge. There is proper golf for grown-ups too. There are three outdoor pools, a paddling one for small children, medium for most kids and an adult one with a diving board. Local lakes have beaches with swimming and water sports. There is a children's farm with donkeys, ponies, pigs and rabbits etc. In 2013 a full size ice skating rink has been opened in Vaujany a short drive from Oz.
Holiday activities: For Alpinists there is summer climbing on some spectacular peaks. You can warm up with some bouldering or on some of the permanent climbing walls including Allemonts spectacular needle. Alternatively there are more routes than you climb in a season.
There are Via Ferrata for those want a taste of climbing without the need for experience or training.
Down in the valleys there are walks and bike trails in the woods with minimal gradients, great for getting up to speed or for small children. There are great drives through the mountains and along the lakes to traditional market towns. Borg d'Oisans, just down the road, has a lively market on Saturdays.
There is also an local farm that makes tasty goats cheese. The cheese comes in various forms, from the fresh milk-white to the hairy blue 'sec' that looks pretty scary, but actually tastes quite mild and delicious.
Andy and Gill have worked in hospitality all over the world for many years. We are experienced at making sure everything goes just right when you visit us.
Andy Christodolo or Gillian Lawrence purchased this apartment in 2011
Oz en Oisans village is in the perfect place to enjoy both the summer and winter seasons. Its really convenient for the lifts which in the winter take you directly to Alpe d'Huez and its fabulous skiing, and in July and August open up to take both mountain bikers and walkers up the mountains. Its close to the Tour de France routes, the famous 21 bends and the great cols of the Alps. Its quiet location means we love to hear the birds and the river running close by.
Le Château d'Oz is in a beautiful traditional mountain village and was built over 400 years ago. It used to be used as a farmhouse but we have made some improvements to it and its now a very comfortable country house. As its the biggest house in the village, it has always been called 'Le Château'. We are just down the road from the Ski lifts and Alpe d'Huez so you are close enough to be convenient yet far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet.
We stayed in late July for the Alpe d'Huez triathlon. A perfect location for this race and cycling in the area. Andy and Gill are gracious hosts and extremely helpful. A hearty breakfast buffet. Our suite was spacious and had its own patio. We would definitely come back. Don't miss this first class accommodation!
The price is for up to 4 persons sharing a self catering apartment- suite,
There is a 100€ / apartment security deposit payable on arrival.
Guests must leave the apartment clean on departure or they may choose to pay an additional 100€/apartment cleaning charge.
We wanted a relaxing holiday & that is what we got. It didn't matter to Gill if we arrived for breakfast at 7.30 or 9.30. We spent our days walking or relaxing without having to keep an eye on the time. Andy is extremely knowledgeable about the area & Gill is an amazing cook who is happy to alter her menus to accommodate fussy eaters such as myself. We are already looking forward to our next stay at Chateau D'Oz.
Excellent, nothing more to say really. Don't go anwhere else if you want to avoid disappointment.
Great place to stay for skiing holiday. Andy and Gill are very hospitable and looked after us really well. The rooms are not rooms but suites and very spacious. Easy access to the slopes and Andy excellent guide. Gill's food is fab.
Le Chateau d'Oz was an ideal getaway for our New Year skiing break. Enough piste and off-piste to keep our teenager happy and fabulous hospitality and gastronomy to make us want to come back again in the summer. Lovely village, great views from spacious rooms and easy to get to. We went as a family but we could imagine this being a great place with friends too.
I booked a room/apartment for myself but it could easily take four or five. Very confortable and the kitchen was a godsend once I had returned from cycling. The breakfast was normal continental but the evening dinners were out of this world!
If you want to go cycling near Alpe D'Huez, you are so close and there are other mountains and the Marmotte route nearby.
A one week visit in September to the French Alps, a wonderful week of weather and accommodation at Chateau d'Oz. Very clean and comfortable apartments, with great service and helpful tips on travelling/sight seeing in the immediate area from Andy and Gill. Whilst staying took advantage on a few nights to eat in, food excellent and accompanied by local wines. Overall highly recommended.
