About the property

4 Bed, 3 bathroom, sleeps 8, large garden set in unspoilt Garfagnana

Fucchi is a delightful family home lovingly restored from an old farmhouse and barn. It has four twin bed and 3 bath / shower rooms and a comfortable sitting room with open fireplace. A dining room with a table for 10 and adjoining kitchen lead out onto a large partly covered terrace with teak table seating 8 making it ideal for al fresco meals. There is also a wood fired traditional oven outside which guests use to make pizzas. For those who enjoy a BBQ there is a more conventional BBQ at the end of the terrrace. Next to the terrace is a swimming pool with 8 new sunloungers and stunning views across the valley to Barga. The sloping grassed garden is dotted with walnut, fig, and fruit trees. The barn is now a games room with table tennis, snooker and football table, board and other games plus a wood burning stove making it ideal for colder winter or spring days.

This peaceful house is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside with historic cities and towns such as Lucca, Barga and Castelnuovo nearby and Carrara and the coast at Forte di Marme not far away.

Local shops are in Gallicano, a 10 min drive, with a good butcher, baker, large and small supermarkets, lovely cafe, bank & sport centre.

Stunning villa, stunning views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this beautifully restored old farmhouse for two weeks in June/July 2008. There were 6 adults, 3 children and one toddler- ample room to accomodate that number. The property was spotlessly clean, fully equipped with plenty bedding ( no need take towels ect). It is situated in an idyllic spot with breathtaking views over to the hilltop town of Barga, a very pretty and popular spot, some 10 minutes from the villa by car and offers a good choice of lively bars/cafes and playpark. Castelnuovo is the nearest main town, again well worth a visit with good shopping (we noticed particularly for shoes) and has a weekly outside market. It also has an excellent shaded playpark which came in very handy. But be warned like many places in the region tends to shut up over lunchtime.

For all daily neds, a well stocked supermarket open 7 days is also some 10/15 minutes door to door by car.

You have a real feeling of getting away from it all, staying at this villa, peaceful and secluded yet in good proximity to local amenities. It also has great outside space, a fantastic shaded terrace where we ate al fresco every evening and a good sized pool where the children would happily amuse themselves for most of the day. For the adults, a games room housed in an adjacent barn with snooker/pool/table tennis/tablefootball/card table all on tap which would also be a great hit with any teenagers.

In summary, a charming villa with a splendid location; if you are looking for a peaceful stay in a villa full of character, then this is the place for you.

Owner's Response: There is also a weekly market at Gallicano (Wednesday mornings) and a very friendly cafe with excellent gelati. The villa is really designed for 8 but a mix of adults and very young children in excess of this number can be accomodated by agreement. There is a cot and highchair.

Lovely views and good views. Great pool and pizza oven!

  • 4 of 5

This was ideal for our family holiday, lovely views, great outside space. We enjoyed cooking in the pizza oven and playing in the games room. The equipment was excellent. The drive up to the house was difficult to navigate, our small hire car did not make it up when full of luggage and people and so the children had to walk! The stairs are steep inside, but Granny was on the entrance floor and so she did not have to navigate them! We had a lovely holiday!

Fantastic rural property with great views, good facilities and a lovely pool

  • 5 of 5

The photographs give you some indication of the location and style of property but when you first arrive, you really get the impression of beautiful rural isolation yet with good shops and restaurants close by. Some reviews bring up the access but we had no problem with the track and driveway (just don't bring your Ferrari).

The grounds are great, the pool is fantastic for all ages with lighting for starlight swimming. We found the rustic charm utterly delightful yet the villa was fully equipped with all that's necessary (The children would have liked wi-fi but it was nice to be able to have a conversation without electronic interruptions). The games room is a great place to while away some time between laps of the pool. The property is well maintained, spotlessly clean and with towels and pool towels supplied. We spent most of our time outside on the shaded terrace and with the choice of Barbeque or Pizza Oven, there are plenty of home cooking options.

The local town has a good supermarket, shops, bars, and restaurants whilst Lucca is only half an hour away. You can be in Florence, Pisa, Bologna, Siena or Modena in around 2 hours; we went by train to Venice from Bologna which was a great way to arrive.

We can really recommend this villa as a great place to stay, relax and explore this fantastic part of Italy, it was a large enough to accommodate four adults and four teenagers and it's a shame that the holiday was over so quick and we'd go back again.

Owner's Response: Really delighted you enjoyed Fucchi so much - we love it as a home from home. Well done on making the trip to Venice, most visitors only make it to Florence and Lucca (both great). We very much hope to welcome you back again in the future.

Stunning location

We had a fantastic week at Fucchi.

Having read about the challenging access to the house I was a little nervous driving a 9-seat Fiat mini-bus with 8 family members and associated luggage from the airport. We'd used Google street-view to check Graham's directions (worth doing for some of the junctions and turnings) and only took one wrong turn soon after leaving Pisa airport.

The last couple of km are on a narrow and very twisty mountain road - don't be afraid to use your horn. We only had to reverse back once when we met the dustbin wagon on it's way down. The entrance to the drive is as sharp as Graham states but if you use the FULL width of the road you can get round in one go. The drive itself is 900m and is fairly rough, steep in places with some tight bends - all adds to the adventure!

As we arrived after 5pm Lena had left so we explored the house ourselves. Luckily we'd stopped at Conad supermarket in Gallicano on the way past so didn't have to go out again. Conad is an excellent supermarket with a great selection of pretty much everything you'll need. Always busy but long queues at the checkouts. There is a bistro in the lobbywhere you can get an excellent coffee for €1.10.

The house

The views from the house are simply stunning. What a joy to wake up to in the morning! We spent many an hour during the week sat on the terrace or by the pool just taking it in. The house itself is beautiful and very well equipped. There are signs of wear and tear around the place but I think that added to it's homliness. The stairs were steeper than expected but not so bad as long as you hold on to the rope and/or the post. There is bedroom and bathroom on the ground (middle) floor if there is anyone in the party who will struggle with stairs. You can also bypass the steep stairs by going out the front door and walking round the side of the house - will make sense when you're there. Having taken our 2-pin european adapters we were stumped by the two different sized 3-pin sockets - you may need to go and buy some adapters (reasonably priced at Conad). The advertised inflatables were found in the woodshed but had definitely seen better days - we added a new Nemo inflatable to the collection. Mosquitos were a bit of a problem so take plenty of repellent.

Days out

We had some great trips out: Barga, Lucca, Pisa Castelnuova and Florence (by train from Lucca). We enjoyed the walk up to Fiatonne and back along the road.

A beautiful house with stunning views

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. As you say the great danger is spending hours doing nothing other than sitting on the terrace or by the pool looking at the view! But delighted you made the trips to Lucca (a must), Florence and Barga. Thank you for the comments about the two sizes of European sockets (may be an Italian streak of independence?) - we will make sure to add some extra adaptors from Conad. House projects are an ongoing exercise with improvements each year. Sadly this years (renewal of the pool filtration system) were technical rather than cosmetically enhancing but next year there will be others hopefully more visible. Thank you for adding Nemo to the collection - they do tend to have a limited life!

Fabulous Fucchi !

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely stunning location that's worth the first gear drive! Very thoughtfully furnished and clearly a home from home.

Graham, the owner, delightful and very easy to communicate with, promptly answering questions and phone calls.

We were two families with three teenagers 15,17 and 18 yrs.

The villa is very well equipped, plenty of cooking utensils with vast amounts of china and serving bowls at your disposal.

The pool huge and loungers truly exceptional. Look out for the owners photo album showing the renovation pictures. The final result a gorgeous terrace with beautiful landscaping: cannas, geraniums, fig trees a wonderful place to relax.

The games room was a fantastic addition which helped the techno addicts cope with lack of internet access! Also of great benefit on a few days of total rain!

Situated perfectly for exploring the local area. Castelnuova buzzing on Market Day, full of locals enjoying an espresso! The local caves are a must see and for the more adventurous a little 'Canyoning' from Fornovlasco. The best ever ice cream served in delightful Barga!

The huge Le Clerc supermarket has a great deli and produce section which is really well stocked. Local fruit and veg amazingly cheap. Despite Italy being expensive the local cafes and restaurants were exceptionally good value.

A truly memorable holiday enhanced by the fabulous Fucchi location.

The villa looks out over the Serchio valley towards Gallicano and ancient hillside town of Barga with its historic church, walled town and great variety of cultural activities. During the summer season Barga enjoys art, opera and jazz festivals. Florence is an easy day trip from Fucchi either by car or train whilst Lucca with its amphitheater, great shops and restaurants and massive city walls you can cycle around to work off lunch is just 45 minutes away. To the north are Castelnuovo (20 minutes) and the unspoilt beauty of the Garfagnana national park famous for all walking, trekking and outdoor pursuits. With Fucch' s stunning views, surrounded by olive trees and with various fruit, walnut and fig trees in the garden it is easy to spend lazy days by the pool or on the terrace. Children will love exploring the hillside covered with chestnut trees which provide pollen for the wonderful local honey, also visiting the Grotto di Vento caves. There are many excellent inexpensive restaurants nearby.
