'La Chouette' at the bottom of the Ramparts

Updated: 22-Sep-2016
Charming town house overlooking river & Pont Pinard

This property has been the long awaited French dream home of ‘Lui Farthing' two Canadian professionals now living in Hong Kong .

Newly refurbished, the team has transformed this property's potential into a charming residence. A few scattered French antiques & light French muted tones provide the canvas to the modern touches in the added furnishings & technology.

La Chouette is a welcoming home from home in the heart of historical Burgundy.

Living: Living...The main living accommodation is located on level 1, overlooking the river and enjoying views up towards the imposing Ramparts. Crisply furnished and with original burgundy character this space is a haven when the sunshine drops in through the large French window with balcony. A moment of rest or work, will lead you to the ground floor office & snug with ‘chaise longue'.

Sleeping: Sleeping...There are two spacious and comfortable double bedrooms, both located on the 2nd floor with adjacent 1st bathroom complete with WC. The second shower room for two is located on the ground floor.

Outdoor: Outdoor...'Le Pique-nique' with your traditional picnic hamper in hand, take a stroll down by the River, roll out a rug & sit admiring the views before you with a glass of world famous wine in your hand or a French coffee. Further afield you can stroll up the steps through the ramparts and be in the heart of the town within a few minutes where you can enjoy the café culture, many restaurants & shops and the magnificent medieval architecture of Semur .

Approx 142 square meters.

My family and I just returned home after spending the most wonderful week at La Chouette. We thoroughly enjoyed the house which is much larger than it appears in the photos and floor plans. Please forward our appreciation to the owners for sharing their home and the bottle of Champagne we found in the fridge - I hope that was for us (ha-ha).

The town of Semur was a nice relaxing break that was much needed, after spending the previous week in Paris.

Mostly, I'd like to thank Kate, Ashley and Lee-Anne. We could not have asked for a more attentive property management team. We will surely use their services again for our next European holiday.

Historical Haven in France

My husband and I plus two friends stayed in this wonderful rental in September for one week. The four of us have rented properties several times together in Europe and decided La Chouette was among the best. Property was accurately represented in description and very clean upon our arrival. Access and lock up were easy transitions. The owners had an extensive amount of information on the area that proved useful. We loved Semur En Auxois. It was a real French village experience that had a good variety of stores and restaurants that filled our needs without the line of tourist buses that have plagued other vacation spots. The combination of the the hilltop towers and church combined with the river that flows near the rental is lovely, and we all have several photos to prove it.

The house itself had quality furnishings and combined the old and new with a great deal of taste. The spiral wooden staircase was one of our favorite things about the house, creaks and all. And the stonewall in the kitchen was a WOW. I was a little worried about the street seeming to be so close to the house, but traffic was light and slow going because of the twisty nature of the road. Parking was easy and convenient. It is a hike up to the local boulangerie and patisserie but the walk gave us an excuse to indulge in an extra croissant. (We are all past 60 and had no problem with the climb.)

We used the home as our base as we biked the Burgundy Canal, which I would recommend. We rented bikes at three different towns that were all less than 30 minutes away. The canal paths were scenic and not crowded at all in September. We thought the biking was more fun than the barges which we easily passed as they continually had to stop for the numerous locks. In the evening we would rest our legs, drink luscious Burgundy wine and watch one of the CDs that the house has available.

I would not hesitate to recommend this special haven to any friend or relative, If you are looking for a taste of France rich in history and beauty, you can't go wrong with La Chouette.
