Overview

About the property

3 bedroom, sleeps 6 adultes + 2 (fold-up beds)

A charming canal-side property overlooking the canal and beyond to Santenay and its hillside vineyards. The house has three floors. There is a fully equipped kitchen with dining area and log burner. The cosy sitting room has double sliding doors leading to an outside eating area, with an additional eating area with barbecue to the side. On the first floor there are two bedrooms (one with double bed and one with twin beds) both with en-suite showers and a separate WC. A spiral staircase leads to a large open plan bedroom (twin beds) with en suite and separate WC. There is plenty of room for two additional (fold-up beds) should they be required. The outside consists of an acre of cultivated land with private canal side frontage and shady areas to sit. There is an acre of woodland incorporating a historic lime stone quarry. There is a house rowing boat to explore the canal or for crossing the canal to get to Santenay.

Local activities: Santenay is a small spa town (1000 inhabitants) in the heart of Burgundy. The spa is in the process of being refurbished (re-open date 2012). It has a mooring area and an open air swimming pool (June-Aug), tennis courts and horse-riding.

It is great for cycling days out (or on foot), meandering through the wine routes of the 'Grand Cru', which goes from Santenay to Dijon. You can stop off to sample the famous wines, such as Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Santenay. You can also cycle on the green route, 'voie verte', along the canal from Santenay to Chalon sur Saone (20 kms). From the comfort of your garden, you can fish, picnic, walk or explore the canal with the house boat that awaits for canal navigation! If you prefer, just sit back and relax in one of the shady garden areas (with your glass of Santenay), and watch the boats, joggers. cyclists and walkers, hard at work.

History of the house: The house is situated in Santenay, Cote d'Or on the Canal du Centre which was built between 1783-1793 and mainly used for commercial purposes. The ancient limestone quarry was in use for many years until commercial traffic fell into decline after World War II.

The limestone quarry at the side of the house was quarried by hand and loaded on to barges. The house was built for the quarry owner and used as such until its closure. The Canal du Centre is now only used for touristic purposes and guests delight at the sight of passing river boats and barges. The house was completely renovated in 1997.

About Mrs Sue Stratford

I grew up in Kent and Dorset. I lived and worked in Switzerland and I used to visit Burgundy, Beaune area, for week-ends and became enchanted with this area.

I am a widow with 3 children in their 20s. I live in Hertfordshire on the edge of Hatfield House Estate and try to visit my house in Burgundy as often as possible.

I enjoy country life and have a dog (a puggle), cats, chickens and a couple of bee hives.

Mrs Sue Stratford purchased this house in 2011

Why Mrs Sue Stratford chose Beaune area

One Sunday after having stayed the night in Beaune on our return from staying with my sister who lives in the the Ardeche region of France, my husband saw an advert for "La Maison sur Le Canal". We did not look at any other houses, fell in love with it and bought it!

What makes this house unique

Beautiful, unique, canal-side property. Peaceful setting, yet only 20 mins from the autoroute and 15 mins from beautiful town of Beuane.

Wonderful Canal Side Holiday

  • 5 of 5

On arrival I was immediately impressed with the stunningly beautiful garden with a sweeping lawn leading down to the canal side. The house was immaculately clean with loads of country charm. Highlights of the holiday: sitting on the lawn by the canal with a glass of local Crémant de Bourgogne watching the sunset (look out for the heron and woodpeckers) and, visiting Rully for a wonderful meal with local wine. I recommend this wonderful house and garden to anyone who wants a peaceful relaxing place to stay in lovely Bourgogne.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review and so pleased you enjoyed your meal in Rully at what must be Le Vendangerot - great food at a reasonable price.

It Was Good To Be Back

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I are long time users of this property. We first rented in 1999 and have now rented a total of 9 times. However, there had been a gap of 10 years before we returned in June 2017. We were delighted to find that the only changes were improvements- a new oven, excellent wifi and new tv system all contributed to another excellent experience at Les Garruches. The proximity of Beaune and easy access to the wineries and sights of the southern Côte de Beaune and the quiet location next to the canal are the highlights of this rustic and delightful property. The next door neighbors look after the house so help is at hand for information and guidance on the area. We have recommended Les Garruches to others and will certainly be back!

Owner's Response: So pleased to hear that your 9th visit to our canal-side house, resulted in "another excellent experience", despite there having been a gap of 10 years. Thank you and look forward to your return.

The house & Santenay are in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

The first time we had been to Burgundy, but hopefully not the last.

The people were charming, the food & wine superb.

Santenay is a fantastic location for the "discover Burgundy" trip we had planned. The drives were all short, plus a whole day dedicated to Santenay itself.

Your recommendation of Chagny Sunday market was spot-on. I don't think I've been to a better one, it enabled us to stock up on our first day, for most of the week.

We tended to eat in a lot, apart from a few lovely lunches at Fixin and Montagny which were good. Slightly disappointed with Les Terriors in the village, but it was a busy evening.

The wine tasting we enjoyed were the less formal places: Prosper Maufoux & Chateau de Santenay; Louis Picamelot & Domaine De L Renaissance (Rully); Domaine du Palais de Nuits (Nuits St George), to name a few. We learnt a lot during our holiday. A shame Domaine Jessiaume were too busy to let us taste.

One thing we'd do on day one, not the last day, would be a trip to the Buxy Coop, exceptionally good value & quality.

It was lovely to see the vineyards come alive as the harvest began whilst we were there.

Your house is delightful, a fantastic location, lovely grounds & very homely. Well equipped with plenty of cutlery, plates etc. The dining area & lounge were perfect for us 5 adults.

Beds were comfortable, the whole house was surprisingly warm esp as it was getting chilly in the evenings near the canal. The stove does heat things up quickly.

The only slightly negative comments is that the showers were very small & a bit basic, I understand your comments ref French plumbing, but one decent size shower would be a good improvement.

However the above small whinge did not stop us from having one of the best holidays we have had for years.

You are very lucky to have such a charming home in France.

Charming & quirky house in a tranquil location near neat village. Beware busy road at top of drive.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the house, which is a converted C19th office building, with living accommodation spread over three floors. The house is tucked down a slope off the road between Santenay and Chagny, overlooking the canal and with a large amount of well tended ground running around. There is a steady flow of leisure boats passing - enough to be interesting but not too much to be bothersome. The towpath opposite is used by cyclists and it looks as through this is a very popular route. The rowing boat attached to the house is a nice touch - and actually the best way of getting bread, croissants and the occasional tarte aux fruits from the excellent bakery in Santenay. Downstairs is a comfortable sitting room with wifi and Sky TV (although the wifi chokes very easily). The kitchen is plenty big enough for cooking and eating, although you'll want to be outside as much as possible if the weather allows. Watch out for mosquitoes - plenty around, even in September. The kitchen has all the equipment you need, although the dishwasher is remarkably tiny and there are the usual holiday house issues with minimal food preparation equipment (lack of chopping knives, boards, etc). The staircases up to the first floor are steep and tight. There are 2 bedrooms, both with ensuite plus 1 toilet on the 1st, and a large attic space with plenty of room for two beds plus toilet and washing facilities on the 2nd. The showers are cramped and the water flow is poor, but they get the job done. While the house itself is tranquil, the road at the top of the drive can get very busy and there is a nasty turn either way onto this road as a result of the steep, unmetalled driveway and a blind bend a few metres from the turning. Cars with lower suspension are also liable to scrape their undercarriage. Something should be done to improve the exit - there is a real risk of an accident here. In the area, there are plenty of places to visit - Beaune, Mâcon, Dijon, for example. We really liked Autun, with a fascinating church, mediaeval streets and Roman remains. This is also serious wine country - Meursault, Pouligny-Montrachet, Nuits-St Georges. Santenay also holds its own. Castles - fortified ones, that is, rather than the seigneurial manor houses turned wine production outlets, are hard to come by. We found the people in the area almost without exception genuine, courteous and friendly. The neighbour who looks after the house for the owner was very helpful throughout.

Uriges Haus am Kanal

  • 4 of 5

Back again for another idyllic getaway..

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd year at this beautiful, rustic little house. We simply love the location - cycling along the canal and through vineyards to the nearby villages. We weren't quite as lucky with the weather this year, but we were still able to eat out in the garden most nights and had a few lazy days in the sunshine at the start of the week. Once again Sue was always prompt in responding to any questions that we had and Serge (the neighbour) was on hand upon arrival, with a friendly smile and tour of the house. We tried a few different things this year; venturing to Nuits St Georges for lunch which was really nice, plus we had dinner in Beaune one evening which again was lovely (spoilt for choice with bars/restaurants). There was a pizza van in the square of Santenay one evening which we used when feeling too lazy to cook (very good pizzas as well) and we did the wine and vineyard tour in Puligny with Olivier Leflaive. We highly recommend the house for a base for exploring the area (Santenay has a supermarket, wine caves, tabac, bakers etc. plus 2 restaurants). We have never eaten in the local restaurants as you are spoilt with the backdrop of your accommodation! Hope to return once again as we had a fantastic time. Thanks Sue!

The delightful three-story stone house and its gardens, borders the Canal du Centre, Cote d'Or, Burgundy with views across to the picturesque village of Santenay (2 kms, shorter if you take the house dinghy) and to its vine-covered hills beyond. Santenay is a charming spa town with one thousand inhabitants. By quirk of french law, it has a casino, and is famous for its Premier Cru wines, and its 14th-century château. There are two fine restaurants and all basic amenities, including a small supermarket, two bakers a pharmacy and a butcher. There are an abundance of medieval towns, cultural events and music festivals on your doorstep. The nearest provincial towns are Changy (4 km), which has a fantastic Sunday market, and Nolay (7 km), which has a covered 4th-century marketplace. The majestic towns of Beaune (18 km), with its 15th-century Hospice and, Dijon (40 km), with its well preserved medieval centre, must be visited.

Other Activities: Boating, ballooning

Golf: Golfing visitors in France often say Burgundy is the land of fine wines, fine cuisine and golf! The four closest golf courses are: Golf de Chalon-sur-Saone (18 kms), Golf d'Autun (28 kms) and Golf d'Avoise (24 kms), Beaune Levernois Golf Course (18 kms).
