About this property

Secluded hill top cottage in the heart of Snowdonia National Park

HAFOD Y LLYN COTTAGE is a very special hill top cottage tucked away amongst 30 acres of privately owned mountain woodland. There is a verandah with table and chairs to enjoy the views of the Rhinog and Manod mountain ranges and wonderful walks from the front door - in all seasons. A swimming lake and request stop on the Ffestiniog railway are all a short walk away. ACCESS: We are situated 3/4 mile from the main road along a track which is rough, narrow and steep in places. (Not suitable for unconfident drivers - see below).

Hafod y Llyn cottage is a very loved artist's home which is full of character. It has been the home of Noelle and Richard for over thirty years, and has lovely old furniture and rugs as well as paintings by Noelle. The cottage overlooks the Vale of Ffestiniog, one of the most beautiful and best preserved wooded valleys in Britain. It is an excellent area for walking, bird watching, mountain bike riding and swimming. A swimming lake and Plas Halt request stop of the Ffestiniog Railway are both within easy walking distance.

DOG OWNERS: we welcome one dog at Hafod y Llyn cottage - please bring bedding, towels and make sure your dog does not go on any furniture. IMPORTANT: Your dog must not be left in the cottage unattended.

HAFOD Y LLYN COTTAGE is a cosy place to relax and enjoy nature. There are books to read and CD's of music to listen to. Also a TV with a selection of DVD's and videos to watch. The cottage has been renovated and furnished in a tasteful and simple style, the living room has two sofas, two chairs and lovely old furniture. A WOOD BURNING STOVE heats the living area and two radiators. A limited supply of firewood is provided.
The LIVING ROOM and two double bedrooms have panoramic views of woodland and mountains. The third bedroom with two single beds looks on to a small courtyard.
Bed linen can be supplied at extra cost. We do not provide towels.
ACCESS: the cottage is 3/4 mile from the road along a track which is in places steep, narrow and rough. It is passable to all cars (except low slung sports models) and not suitable for unconfident drivers. The railway crossing limits width/length of vehicles to standard transit van measurements. PLEASE CONTACT us if you drive a camper van as it might be too wide or long for the crossing.

WOODLAND PASTURE scheme with a few of cows grazing our 30 acres of land is starting in 2020. The hope is to create a more diverse habitat for wildlife at Hafod. You may meet cows on the track. The cottage and parking area is fenced to keep cows out - please keep the gates closed.

Lovely Location
The location was perfect, lovely surroundings and walks. We felt that the property was not perfectly clean, some crockery/utensils dirty. Broken main light bulb in one bedroom, couldn't replace. Grill on gas cooker would not turn up to a high flame, so couldn't cook on it. Wooden crockery drainer dirty. The was no smoke detector in the property, which is a legal requirement in all holiday cottages.

Fantastic place to unwind, surrounded by natural beauty
A truly stunning location, set in 30 acres of green to walk around (including a swimming lake ten mins away on foot). The view from the veranda, overlooking miles of mountain is just incredible. We spent as much time as we could sitting thete and it fast became one of our favourite places in the world. When we weren’t doing that, there are lots of things to see and do in the surrounding area. Can strongly recommend.

Historic Cottage, remote but with easy access to North Wales attractions
Would highly recommend it. Staying at Maentwrog is like stepping back in time, has the feel of a 1950s cottage and has not been overly modernised like many places and is furnished in that period. Saying that there had plenty of hot water, the stove is good, beds are comfy and the shower is a power shower. No microwave though. The cottage is quite big so plenty of space for everyone. The kitchen could do with a bit of a sort out so there is somewhere for guests food and crockery could do with an update but everything was clean. Has weak Wifi but our Mobiles got decent coverage so planning days out was OK. Very tranquil location, the route up to the cottage is a fun drive and a bit of ground clearance is definitely required, very low slung cars would struggle. It only takes about 5 mins to get down though and then you are away on decent roads so getting places is easy enough. All in all a lovely place to stay.

A home from home we will return to
This home is special. A combination of breathtaking scenery and superb location, very comfortable abode with everything you need whilst giving the feeling of wild country living escapism. The decor and Noelles wonderful paintings add serenity and interest to the cottage. My family all connected to this place immensely.

About the host

Hosted by Noelle Griffiths

Host profile image
Noelle has been living at HAFOD since 1988 when she married and moved into her husband's family home. Set in 30 acres of mountain woodland, she and her family have lovingly restored the land to its former beauty by felling conifers, re-planting with oaks and returning some land to pasture in 1991.

They live in HAFOD y LLYN cottage which was the Gamekeeper's cottage for the Plas Tan y Bwlch estate. This cottage is rented between July - October.

HAFOD cottage used to be the kennels for the large hunting dogs kept by the gamekeeper in Victorian times. The kennels had a central wall which heated the building so the dogs were warm in the winter! They renovated this building in 1991 and this cottage is rented all year.

Why they chose this property

It is 3/4 mile from the road, along a track which passes through some beautiful scenery. It is private with no other cars apart from ours and our guests.
It has wonderful walks from the front door, as well as a request stop (5 minute walk from Hafod cottage) for the Ffestiniog Railway. A swimming lake is a ten minute walk away.
It is the perfect place to relax in nature and explore Snowdonia.

What makes this property unique

Hafod is very secluded, our local road is 3/4 mile away so you cannot hear or see traffic. You can walk to the local pub along paths and a track, only crossing the road once outside the pub!

HAFOD is close to the sea - sandy beaches of Harlech or the beaches near Porthmadog of Borth y Gest or Criccieth - all approx 20 minute drive away.
Snowdon mountain range is also approx 20 minute drive. Lots of castles, slate caverns, zipwire and bounce below, mountain biking at Coed y Brenin, the Italianate village of Portmeirion are all approx 20 minutes drive.
