About the property

Thurlibeer House sleeps up to 19 people, with countryside and sea views

Just 4 miles from Bude's beaches and its many traditional seaside attractions, this very spacious and unusual, colonial-style holiday property has its own spacious garden and commands wonderful views across the countryside towards Widemouth Bay and the sea.

As well as a wide variety of shops, inns, restaurants and the Bude Castle Heritage Centre, Bude has three large sandy beaches popular with surfers (with lifeguard patrol in summer), one with a very large sea-water swimming-pool. Its sports facilities include a superb 18-hole golf course, tennis and squash courts, Splash leisure centre and ten pin bowling. Delightful walking can be found nearby on the picturesque North Cornwall Coastal Footpath, and also along the towpath of Bude's canal - 2½ miles of quiet level walking of special interest to wildlife and birdlife lovers, starting less than half a mile from the property and leading to Summerleaze beach in Bude. Fishing is also available in the canal (some of the finest coarse fishing waters in the west) and sea fishing trips and crabbing can be arranged. The well-known Tree Inn at Stratton is 1½ miles.

Why Chris Hunter chose Cornwall

Thurlibeer House is situated in a stunning location with views to the West down to the cliffs, Widemouth Bay and the Atlantic ocean, as well as South down into Cornwall. It offers peace and tranquillity and at the same time is easily accessible from the nearby towns of Bude and Holsworthy. The cities of Exeter, Plymouth and Truro are all within around an hour's drive. The house was built as a gentleman's residence in 1920. When the owner Mr Sandry died in 1935, Thurlibeer became the farm house for the surrounding farmland, before the Daw family sold it on in 1985. Chris Hunter has gradually renovated and updated the house over the last 10 years.

What makes this house unique

Most of the house is arranged on the ground floor with three bedrooms upstairs. There is plenty of space, with lounges at opposite ends of the property so that guests can spread out and occupy different sections of the house if they desire - great for example for adults wanting some peace and quiet away from noisy children!

We had the best time!

  • 5 of 5

The house is massive and have everything we need for our short family break. The kids (&adults) enjoyed the massive garden. It was very close to the beach, shops and even to some of the main sites in cornwall (tintagel castle, minack theatre). We would love to come back in the summer!

Perfect house for our school residential visit to Cornwall

  • 5 of 5

This being our first school residential visit to Cornwall we tried to find a property that had enough rooms to allow staff and students to have their own separate areas for sleeping and relaxing. With 7 bedrooms (and the option of 2 more if required), two lounge areas and a lovely sun-room this was the ideal property. Coupled with games rooms, utility room and a well equipped kitchen fulfilled this really was a practical place to stay, but it was also nicely furnished and equipped with TVs, DVD and CD players. During our stay we visited the Eden Project, Dartmoor, Clovelly, Mevagissey, Padstow as well as the lovely beaches/town of Bude. The house is well positioned for inspiring views and good access to main transport routes.

We loved our week at Thurlibeer House and would highly recommend it.

Spacious accommodation

  • 4 of 5

Loved the property. Everything very clean and comfortable. We had a number of people coming and going throughout the week,15 at most, and all were more than adequately catered for. The younger element particularly enjoyed the pool and table tennisThe garden and the views were lovely. Altogether a lovely week.
