The neighbourhood
Modern, lively and sophisticated, Vilamoura has developed around its marina, and is today one of the largest leisure resorts in Europe.
From the splendid Marina to the prestigious golf courses, the rich and diverse shopping area, Vilamoura offers everything. With tranquility and good taste.
Excellent hotels and tourist villages, and golf courses of international repute offer a complete package for those looking to spend some relaxing days by the sea.
Marina
The sun, the sea and the blue sky of the Algarve make it a unique place, where the intense social life and the spontaneous conviviality of the esplanades give another dimension to old or new friendships.
The marina, the largest in the country with 1300 berths, is the main hub of entertainment, not only for those who arrive by boat, but for everyone spending a holiday in the area and who come here in the late afternoon or evening to enjoy an ice cream or dinner. It’s also the right place for shopping, with a wide range from local craft stores to the most prestigious international brands. As for the nightlife, there are many bars and clubs with the best DJs and the Vilamoura Casino promises to really get the adrenaline running.
Activities
There are countless activities to do during the day. Tennis, horse riding, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, parasailing, boat trips, fishing, the range is so huge you’ll be spoilt for choice. The warm waters and golden sands are a stone’s throw away. From the pontoon east from the Marina, the sands of Vilamoura Beach extend to Quarteira; and to the west is Falésia Beach, which stretches for miles, only finishing at Olhos de Água, so there’s plenty of space to lay out your towel and sunbathe on the beach. Safety conditions are the best, and there are many amusements for a few perfect days at the seaside.
Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila (Cerro da Vila Archaeological centre and museum)
Villa dating from the 3rd century. Archaeological finds have shown that the villa was inhabited during the Roman, Visigoth and Arab periods (1st century B.C. until the 11th century A.D.). Key features include the residential zone next to the Port, the bath-houses and the fish-salting factory.
Beaches
Praia da Falésia
The name Falésia means ‘cliff’ and refers to the distinctive orange-red cliffs that flank this long South-West facing beach.
Falésia beach is one of the longest in the Algarve with a stretch of more than 6km of golden sands. Located between Vilamoura and Albufeira, it is a popular spot for families and resort visitors in the summer. The sand banks have a gentle slope to the water and there are plenty of beach restaurants, facilities and lifeguards during the busier summer season.
Apart from enjoying the waves it is also possible to take a long walk or bike ride along a coastal path that runs through scenic villages such as Olhos de Agua and Açoteias and across the top of the cliffs which are dotted with pine forests.
Praia de Vilamoura
The sands continue onwards in the direction of Quarteira and have taken on some of the characteristics of an urban beach given very easy access from the adjoining road and the excellence of the support infrastructures.
The beach to the west ends at the Marina which is the area's main centre of attraction and home to some of the best restaurants, bars and stores to be found in the Algarve in addition to a number of companies operating excursions out along the Algarve coastline.
Praia da Rocha Baixinha
Popularly known as "Praia dos Tomates" (Tomato Beach) given the plants growing by one of the points of access, Rocha Baixinha Beach is a peaceful area in the far east of the long Falésia Beach and a favourite destination for many of Portugal's politicians. Very close to the Vilamoura Marina, one of the major points of attraction on the Algarve, this Beach is divided into two areas - West and East.
Getting around
We recommend hiring a car to be able to explore and make the most of your surroundings.
The Algarve has lots of hidden gems, coastal walks, award-winning beaches, beautiful landscapes that would be a shame to miss out on.
You also need a car to get to the beach and the marina, which are less than 10 minutes away. The nearest supermarket is only a 2-minute drive from the apartment. Alternatively you could use local transport or taxis to get around.
Many guests do not leave Vila Sol at all during their stay. Vila Sol offers plenty of fine dining options, more informal options, a couple of bars, a Deli France coffee shop, etc.
