About The Owner

We moved to Burley 25 years ago and fell in love with the unique beauty of the area and New Forest life style, which coupled with the close proximity to some of the best beaches and coastline the South coast has to offer makes it the perfect location for relaxation and recreational pursuits.

It was the most wonderful area in which to bring up our daughter and we feel very spolit to have lived in such a superb location yet less than 2 hours from London.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2016

Why The Owner chose Burley

Gardeners Retreat was originally built at the turn of the last century for the gardener of Shappen House. When an opportunity arose to purchase the cottage we were wowed by its superb location and lovely views, central to the village yet tucked away from the everyday hustle and bustle, so peaceful but not remote. We were lucky enough to secure the neighbouring Keepers cottage too and so set about restoring the cottage to a wonderful Forest home for family and guests to experience the lifestyle we have so enjoyed.

Great holiday in the New Forest, perfect house and location

  • 5 of 5

" Thanks Nicole & Dave for our stay in your beautiful Gardeners Retreat. We loved the house, the garden and being in Burley - especially enjoyed seeing the ponies trotting down the street!

We were so lucky with the weather and especially enjoyed walking across the heath, pub lunch at Emery, Mudeford & Milton on Sea, coffee at Steff's cafe in Beaulieu.

Thanks again for the lovely warm welcome - very much appreciated. We will definitely return to the New Forest."

We had a wonderful time here - the house is beautiful and looks newly renovated. The area is lovely and peaceful but with all the local necessities nearby. Perfect enclosed dog-proof garden too.

Owner was very helpful with a last minute change of dates.

Many thanks - Caroline and Jason

A cosy cottage, well decorated and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We spent our Christmas week at Gardeners Retreat. The property has a cottage feel but is spacious, very well decorated with all modern facilities. It's an easy 5/10 minute walk from the centre of Burley where there are a couple of pubs/restuarants serving good food. We would certainly revisit.

A beautiful cottage in the heart of the New Forest

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we walked into Gardener’s Retreat, we knew that we would have an amazing week. The communication with the owner, Nicole, had been faultless, with Nicole even calling me several weeks before our stay to let me know about a fireworks event that was happening in the village during our stay. There was no detail forgotten.

The cottage was spotlessly clean and when I mean spotlessly clean, it was as if we were the first guests to have stayed there. The master bedroom was beautifully set out, with plenty of space for unpacking and a sumptiously comfortable bed to sleep in. It was clear that a lot of time and thought had gone into making the bed as comfortable as possible, with a mattress topper and cosy, soft linens and blankets, which made it hard to get out of bed in the mornings! Our three children slept well in the twin bedroom and double bedroom, again with lots of space for clothes and toys.

The living area was warm and welcoming, with a log burning stove and comfortable sofas. Again, the extra touches did not go unnoticed, with super soft blankets on the corner of each sofa, magazines on the table and a SONOS speaker for music and radio. There was also a full catalogue of television channels, including Netflix and Amazon for box sets and movies.

The kitchen was perfectly equipped and the welcome hamper was the best that we have had in many years of staying in self-catering accommodation. Little touches like a torch just by the front door for walks to the local pubs in the evening were very welcome.

We had an amazing week of activities too, helped by the folder of information in the cottage. We hired bikes for two days and cycled 18 miles on both days! Our favourite pub by far was the White Buck, which is an easy wooded walk of 20 minutes, where open fires and a welcome pint await. We loved the brunch at The Cider Pantry and we enjoyed crabbing at nearby Mudeford, where we bought delicious fish and chips and spent two hours crabbing afterwards - 283 crabs caught in all!

The weater was autumnally changeable but the children enjoyed the grounds of the cottage nevertheless, with badminton sets and giant Jenga amongst the equipment provided by the cottage. We would love to come back in the summer to enjoy the outdoors even more!

All in all a fantastic trip and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gardener’s Retreat - it really was a five star retreat.

The cottage was in immaculate condition and left very clean. We had a really enjoyable stay in this beautiful location and found the area very entertaining for the kids. The cottage is highly recommendable as a nice holiday getaway.
