Tavira is a city bounded by long beaches separated by an arm of the Ria Formosa estuary and gentle rolling hills covered with sweet-smelling orchards, Tavira is one of the most delightful cities in the Algarve, with its unique architecture.
It has a charming mix of beautiful buildings, cobbled streets and squares that maintain the atmosphere of a traditional Algarve fishing village. The Gilão River, which runs along the city center, amplifies its charm. The city is full of elegant buildings displaying Tavira's characteristic pyramidal roofs and is crossed by an ancient bridge, allegedly of Roman origin, whose best perspective can be obtained from Praça da República. This square, surrounded by the town hall and other splendid buildings, is extended by gardens which are a great place for walking.
The nearby Ribeira Market, a 19th-century wrought-iron building that once housed the former central market, is another pleasant area for strolling through the shops and having a meal or drink in its many restaurants and bars - a perfect opportunity to relax and unwind. sample local specialties such as razor clam feijoada, octopus rice or tuna with chives and tomato sauce.
Just outside Tavira, be prepared to be surprised by the brilliance of the salt flats that are a remote tradition of the area and produce the finest table salt in the country. In addition to the salt flats, you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Ria Formosa estuary - a vast network of canals, marshes and sand banks that house numerous migratory bird species. Boats departing from Tavira offer scenic tours of these tranquil waters.
Beyond the estuary waters extends a paradise for sun and sea lovers. Two strips of sand, separated by canals and accessible by boat, form two islands composed of long stretches of dunes. Tavira Island - the nearest beach to the city - is located in the eastern part of the island and offers many facilities including bars, restaurants and water sports. The beautiful, sheltered Barril Beach faces west and is accessible via a picturesque tourist train that crosses the muddy shores and marshes of Ria Formosa, or Terra Estreita Beach with boat access available at the pier of Sta Luzia. The most secluded beaches are west of Tavira Island or east of neighboring Cabanas Island. These short panoramic trips offer a unique opportunity to admire the natural landscape and observe the fauna of the region.
Golfers can play on one of four 18-hole golf courses. Benamor Golf is just outside Tavira, while the Quinta de Cima, Quinta da Ria and Monte Rei Golf & Country Club courses are within walking distance to the east.
