Overview

About the property

The Garden Apartment is ideally situated to explore 1066 Country.

The Garden Apartment is great for a seaside break at any time of the year. The apartment opens on the garden of our Edwardian House just above the Old Town in Hastings. Whereas we have decorated our London flat in a contemporary style; in this apartment we have kept to the Edwardian theme and furnished it in the style of a time travelling Edwardian gentleman. So you will find a comfortable 4 poster bed, possibly the only 4 poster bunk beds in England but also a modern kitchen with dishwasher and a living room with very handy living coal gas fire which is wonderful to come back to after a bracing autumn walk by the sea. The apartment is ideal for four people but if there are five of you, the leather sofa in the living room converts to a small double bed perfect for one, but possible for two friendly people!

You can just see the sea from the master bedroom and the garden, whilst the country park is just a a few hundred yards away. There you can walk for miles taking in fantastic cliff top views.

About Sue McDougall

We moved to Hastings in 2008 and chose our house in Godwin Road because we felt it was in the perfect position, offering a quiet location but close enough to the beach, the delights of the Old Town and the Country Park. We are kind of retired, except that Sue is also an artist and undertaking a degree in Fine Art Contemporary Practice at Hastings College. If you are interested in art, she will show you her studio. David is interested in history and can tell you all about how the Normans invaded Britain in 1066. We also have a holiday flat in London. We have three grown up children and our daughter Sophia is a novelist. You will find the first volume of her trilogy Romanitas in the bookshelves- watch out for her first children's book Mars Evacuees which should be published some time in 2013.

Sue McDougall purchased this apartment in 2009

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is completely self contained; we have tried to make it as comfortable as possible. The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher. The main bedroom and living room are south facing; you will find that the sun pours through the windows. You can relax in the garden, have a barbecue, or in season help yourself to plums from our extremely productive plum tree. We also know that sometimes the weather in England can be less than perfect! That is no reason not have a good time. We provide plenty of books, board games and cards, a DVD player and selection of DVDs, so sit in front of the warm fire and enjoy,

fantastic stay with the best garden ever

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Sue's flat for 3 nights and it was really nice experience. Sue was super nice and lives right upstairs. We did not need to bother her at all during our stay because everything was well thought and prepared. The location is great, in a safe and decent neighborhood. It is said to be 20 minutes walk to beach, but we always drive and reach there in minutes. The beds are comfy. But the absolute highlight is the garden, where we enjoyed all breakfast and some dinner there on the big wood table outside. Highly recommended and we would love to be back.

Spacious, Comfortable and very Homely.

We travelled from abroad so to be able to spend time with our family. The apartment provided us with the space and comfort to enjoy this family get together. The front room opens out to a well kept beautiful garden. Everything was there to make our stay a special one.

Lovely peaceful hideaway above the bustle of Hastings

  • 5 of 5

Very well-kept and equipped, beautifully furnished garden apartment on a quiet street an easy 15 minute walk from the seafront (much longer on the way back up!), the beds are a special touch lending the property a lot of character, and the wonderful stock of books made us want to stay for much longer! Great for a peaceful getaway with lots of activities for all the family a short distance away.

absolutely perfect

  • 5 of 5

This apartment has every thing you need ,it is very comfortable with the four poster bed plus everything else. It is very clean and the garden in the summer would be lovely. It is situated a little way from the town but in walking distance about 10 - 20 minutes, but may take longer coming back as it is up hill. There is a 15 minute bus service 5 mins at most, from the apartment which takes you straight to the town .

I would recommend this apartment if you would like a nice enjoyable holiday. The only down side is the lack of a light on the steps to the front door .

William.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for that great review. We hope we'll see you again. There is a light by the front door that does light up the steps. You do need to leave it on when you go out, and we'll look in to having an outside switch fitted. David

Very comfortable and charming apartment which is close to all of Hastings amenities.

  • 4 of 5

This is a fantastic holiday apartment and was spotlessly clean. The highlight is the extremely comfortable and huge four poster bed. In addition the photographs of the sitting room do not do it justice as it is a great place to sit and relax after a long day exploring all the charms of this delightful area of England. The garden too is delightful but if I was being a tad critical it requires a little TLC. That said it gets the sun all afternoon and, if you had time, it would be a lovely place to wile away an afternoon.

Hastings is a much more hilly town than we were expecting but there is a good bus service and the bus stop is a very short distance from the apartment. There is no shortage of fine pubs serving good food down in the old town and these are a short walk, or an even shorter bus ride away.

For us Hastings was a great base to enable us to explore by car. Chartwell, Hever Castle, Bodium Castle and the charming town of Rye are all less than an hour away and there is so much else to see.

In summary, we would recommend this lovely apartment to anyone. The only reason we have scored four stars is that the washing machine (an essential on our touring holiday) has seen better days and needs updating.
