About the property

The Garden Apartment is ideally situated to explore 1066 Country.

The Garden Apartment is great for a seaside break at any time of the year. The apartment opens on the garden of our Edwardian House just above the Old Town in Hastings. Whereas we have decorated our London flat in a contemporary style; in this apartment we have kept to the Edwardian theme and furnished it in the style of a time travelling Edwardian gentleman. So you will find a comfortable 4 poster bed, possibly the only 4 poster bunk beds in England but also a modern kitchen with dishwasher and a living room with very handy living coal gas fire which is wonderful to come back to after a bracing autumn walk by the sea. The apartment is ideal for four people but if there are five of you, the leather sofa in the living room converts to a small double bed perfect for one, but possible for two friendly people!

You can just see the sea from the master bedroom and the garden, whilst the country park is just a a few hundred yards away. There you can walk for miles taking in fantastic cliff top views.

About Sue McDougall

We moved to Hastings in 2008 and chose our house in Godwin Road because we felt it was in the perfect position, offering a quiet location but close enough to the beach, the delights of the Old Town and the Country Park. We are kind of retired, except that Sue is also an artist If you are interested in art, she will show you her studio. We also have a holiday flat in London. We have three grown up children and our daughter Sophia is a novelist. You will find the first volume of her trilogy Romanitas in the bookshelves- she has also had published two books for children Mars Evacuees and Space Hostages.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is completely self contained; we have tried to make it as comfortable as possible. The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher. The main bedroom and living room are south facing; you will find that the sun pours through the windows. You can relax in the garden, have a barbecue, or in season help yourself to plums from our extremely productive plum tree. We also know that sometimes the weather in England can be less than perfect! That is no reason not have a good time. We provide plenty of books, board games and cards, a DVD player and selection of DVDs, so sit in front of the warm fire and enjoy.

  • Please note that the bathroom is off this bedroom but there is a separate toilet accessed from the passage so you don't need to disturb the occupants of the small bedroom in the night.

  • The small bedroom contains 2 bunk beds made from a genuine four poster. It was made over 80 years ago so the original four poster must have been much older than that. We have brought it up to date so that it meets bunk bed regulations and bought new mattresses so that it is comfortable enough to sleep adults (if one of them is prepared to climb up the ladder!) We also have a sofa bed in the sitting room which is converts to a double bed, very comfortable for one person, possible for two friendly people.

Very pleasant stay

We had a warm welcome with Sue giving us all the information we needed. The apartment itself was very cosy. It just felt homely with all the books, the fireplace, the four poster bed, the bunk bed in which our little girls loved to play ... Definitely worth a stay!

Plenty of room, steps down to it a little steeper than expected, good facilities, lovely garden. Some bits in need of decoration and the bathroom light was not repaired all week although the owner knew about it. Otherwise would give it a five.

fantastic stay with the best garden ever

We stayed at Sue's flat for 3 nights and it was really nice experience. Sue was super nice and lives right upstairs. We did not need to bother her at all during our stay because everything was well thought and prepared. The location is great, in a safe and decent neighborhood. It is said to be 20 minutes walk to beach, but we always drive and reach there in minutes. The beds are comfy. But the absolute highlight is the garden, where we enjoyed all breakfast and some dinner there on the big wood table outside. Highly recommended and we would love to be back.

Spacious, Comfortable and very Homely.

We travelled from abroad so to be able to spend time with our family. The apartment provided us with the space and comfort to enjoy this family get together. The front room opens out to a well kept beautiful garden. Everything was there to make our stay a special one.
