Bella mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week from 6-13 September 16. First impression was how clean and fresh smelling the apartment was, many thanks to Adriana.

During our stay we visited some of the recommended places, including Bellinzona and Maccagno.

We ate at the restaurant in the village, which was good, but also walked towards Agna to find the restaurant Smeraldo. It is about 1km away and can be accessed on foot, with care. Lunch was delicious.

A few basic Italian words are helpful as this is in the heart of rural Italy, which suited us perfectly.

We hope to return again for another trip.

Owner's Response: We are grateful that you hope to return again for another trip. We are often told that the location suits our guests perfectly. Other guests have said that they enjoyed lunch at the restaurant Smeraldo, Agna as well as the restaurant in the village. It is always pleasing when our guests visit they places we recommend, including Bellinzona and Maccagno. Future guests will be grateful to know that the apartment clean and fresh. We have passed your positive comments to the housekeeper. We look forward to you staying as a guest in future.

Ideal location for exploring Maggiore and the Italian/Swiss pre-Alps

  • 4 of 5

Small but perfectly pleasant apartment ("Bijou"?) in good location in the hills close to the Swiss border. Ideal for exploring the less touristy parts of Lake Maggiore, the pre-Alps (such as Monte Lema and Monte Tamaro), or the Swiss canton of Ticino. Lugano is about a half-an-hour drive.

Luino, five minutes away, has all the amenities you could want, including a 24-hour Carrefour and large Coop. There is a small supermarket a short walk from the flat for anything you forgot.

The apartment is small, but big enough for us (mum, dad, and teenage son). Very nice to have alfresco evening meal on the terrace. The bathroom is clean and neat, and the kitchen has the basics. There's TV but no internet, but then you probably came on holiday to get away from all that :-)

A great little apartment in a beautiful area

  • 4 of 5

I spent a very nice week in the apartment, which was just as it was described--very clean and nicely accessible on the ground floor. It's only a 10-minute drive from Luino but a world away in terms of the quiet and solitude. Parking was not always available at the door, but it was never a problem to find something within 100 yards. As I've become fairly dependent on the Internet, the lack of this in the apartment was manageable, given that Luino provides wifi access in all of its park areas, so one can just park nearby and catch up. The only real problem I encountered was the weather--half of the week was sunny and warm, and the other half was cold and wet, and this makes all the difference in whether you can take advantage of the beauty of the area. As I was traveling alone, the apartment was plenty spacious, and I'm sure it would be fine for two, but any more would be a tight squeeze. But, then, with warm weather, the very nice patio could be better used. I would not hesitate to stay here again, and I'd love to spend more time in the area.

Nice apartment, quiet zone, excellent holidays.

  • 5 of 5

Nicely decorated apartment with all facilities within. Clean house in a quiet zone (with supermarket and pharmacy close by) and with a nice terrace. We could take our dog. Close to main cities and ideal for a family holiday. Owner was trustworthy and provided local tourist information. Everything went just as expected.

Places visited: Dumenza, Luino, Maccagno, Pino Sulla Sponda..., Cannobio, Laveno, Cerro, Lugano and Maroggia.

We might just come back...

Dumenza is in the heart of the Italian lakes and mountains, with parts of the village overlook Lake Maggiore. Lake Lugano in Switzerland and Lake Como are within an easy drive. Dumenza is in beautiful mountain countryside with easy access by road, including a bus service, a local supermarket, pharmacy, post office, as well as a couple of bars and restaurants. There are plenty of opportunities for walking. You can even walk up to the Swiss border. On Lake Maggiore you can bathe at Maccagno, and take boat trips from Luino. The nearest skiing resort is San Bernardino in Switzerland. Dumenza is 411m (1,348 ft) above sea level and it has great mountain views. It is just over 40 miles from Milan. Dumenza is the birthplace of Bernardino Luini, Italian painter who was a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci. His works can be found in the Louvre and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. On either side of narrow streets of the adjacent village of Runo are many frescoes, dating from 1978
