About Sue Lion

We both spent most of our lives in the big, bustling city of Bristol. Simon working as a plumber and I as a school teacher. I was brought up bilingual as my father was Belgian and we wanted our children to speak French and be able to speak to their Belgian cousins easily. So over one Christmas dinner we decided to take the leap, taking our two boys out of their large, city schools and settled into village life in the sunny Charente Maritime.

Sue Lion purchased this barn in 2010

Why Sue Lion chose Charente-Maritime

From the moment we drove up the drive, we fell in love with the space and freedom that came with the house and its' 3 acres of land. The main house is a typical stone charentaise with plenty of room for family and friends.

What makes this barn unique

The tranquility and peace surrounds you as soon as you arrive at The Orchard Gites. Owls, hoopoes, woodpeckers are frequent visitors; vineyards a-plenty and space as far as the eye can see. The Orchard itself was another one of the main features we fell in love with here, it is abundant in fruits from apples and peaches to mirabelles and cherries and we spend hours pouring over recipes to turn our pickings into delicious, potted delicacies.

Beautiful modern gite

  • 5 of 5

A lovely gite with everything that we needed for a comfortable stay. Owner was very friendly and welcoming with lots of information on places to visit. Very rural and tranquil. car is essential. Only disadvantage was that it was a 45 min drive to Royan and further that we thought from the beach.

An amazing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a base to enjoy some of the most spectacular parts of France, you will not be disappointed with what you find.

We received a fantastic welcome from Sarah and enjoying staying in the luxury of the 2 bed gite. For those rainy mornings we enjoyed relaxing breakfasts with fresh eggs from the family hens before heading out to enjoy various regions after the siesta.

We found that the vines growing around the property are used by Hennessy in the creation of their Cognacs, there were a number of barrels in the aging warehouse with Chez Barre written across the front.

But, back to the gite, the space is bright, modern and airy; all adds to feeling relaxed and not rushed. As I said above, if you book to stay here you will not be disappointed.

From myself and Roberta, thank you Sarah for a wonderful welcome and a fantastic stay. We look forward to seeing the region again in the future (not too sure when) and when we do we shall be in touch to stay once again.

All the best.

Richard and Roberta

Lovely rural France

  • 4 of 5

A great place to stay, characterful and peaceful, off the main (quiet) road set in their own gardens behind the main house. A short walk to the next hamlet provides local interest: a short car ride (less than an hour) gives access to the beach, Talmont (a town built 1284 by Edward 1st of England) and Saintes, a city with good shops and Roman ruins. Something for everybody!

Can't wait until next year!

  • 5 of 5

We have just got home from a fabulous week. From the minute we arrived the owners of this beautiful gite made us feel completely at home. The lovely owners were there on hand for all our strange requests, from restaurant recommendations to delicious eggs fresh from their chickens for breakfast. The gites are perfectly equipped with everything you need. Our boys spent most of the time playing ping pong, going off on their bikes into the woods and playing in the fantastic hot tub. It is amazingly quiet. All you hear is the occasional tractor working in the vineyards in the distance. We had mixed weather so on the cloudy days went to Saint, the lovely Talmont and the brilliant Zoo in Palmyre, and the beach 20 mins away. Would definitely recommend for families or for couples wanting a quiet retreat in the heart of real France. Thank you Sarah and Simon for a perfect break, can we have the same week next year!

Surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers, The Orchard is nestled in rural Charente Maritime yet within a short 30 minute drive of beautiful beaches of Meschers, St George de Didonne, Royan and the pretty port of Mortagne. Why not visit Cognac and its famous distilleries, the Roman amphitheatre in historic Saintes situated on the River Charente or perhaps a shopping trip along the cobbled streets of Bordeaux, a World Heritage site. Perhaps even a glitzy evening spent at the Casino in Jonzac?

Fish and food markets a plenty, cafes to visit and boat trips to take along the river. There are village shops close by and Gemozac hosts an outdoor pool with slides to cool down in on hot afternoons during July and August.

An area to relax and unwind, spending long days in glorious sunshine and evenings spent watching the stars whilst drinking a glass of local vino.
