About this property

Holiday Home in Central Exmouth Grade 2 listed character property, very charming

Laurel Cottage is situated on Bicton Street which contains many listed Georgian properties. The town of Exmouth has been resort since the 18th century when it was a fashionable place to visit for many famous figures including Lady Nelson who is buried locally , and the estranged wife of Lord Byron. It's hey-day was in the 1950s and 60s before the advent of affordable foreign travel and there is still that nostalgic feel to Exmouth which is much appreciated by families taking holidays here. There is a fabulous 2 mile long sandy beach and Exmouth is the gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The town has got quite a reputation now for its restaurants, (many which are within walking distance of Laurel Cottage) Mitch Tonks recently opened a new branch of Rockfish on the sea front and Michael Caines has opened has a luxury hotel with Fine Dining in nearby Lympstone plus there is the fantastic River Cafe which is situated out of the river and is accessible bywater taxi from the Marina. There is plenty of information left for you in the house regarding entertainment/activities and lots of leisure activities in Exmouth and the surrounding area.

The house itself has 3 bedrooms, one with a king-size bed, one double bed and one with twin beds. There is a bath and shower (not separate) . There are 2 bedrooms on the first floor and the twin room is on the top floor. It is not really suitable for people with mobility problems or very small toddler children. There is a good-size patio garden which gets sun all day long. There is a large table for dining outside which seats 6 and rear access to the lane where we have private parking for a small to medium sized car. If you have a larger car then there is plenty of parking in the surrounding streets and there are close by car parks offering 24 hr parking at very reasonable cost. If requested we can provide a Visitor Permit for parking on Bicton Street. The Living room and dining room are on the ground floor with access to the garden through double doors to a smaller patio with table and 2 chairs. The kitchen also opens on to the garden and patio. The washing machine and tumble dryer are in the garden room along with an extra fridge with freezer compartment. We have free wifi and the large flat screen television has Freeview plus there is a dvd player/ dvds , books and games. The house has been fully upgraded to comply with current Fire Regulations. There is a small theatre in Bicton Street which has frequent productions. The cinema and shops (Greengrocer, FishMonger, Butcher, WHS, small Tesco and large Co-Op,Boots the chemist, Marks and Spencer Food-Hall) are all within walking distance and a large Tesco and Lidl are a short drive from the house. The station which has frequent trains to Exeter on the scenic Avocet line is also within walking distance. There is a weekly farmers market in The Strand (central Exmouth), Exmouth has a promenade that stretches along the entire length of the beach and there are numerous cafes, pubs and entertainment venues including a 10 pin bowling alley and The Pavilion Theatre .Leisure facilities on offer include the following:
Fishing, Sailing, Windsurfing, Kite-boarding, Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, Water Ski-ing, Cycling The River Exe Trail, Bird-Watching and walking the South West Coastal Path. To sum up Exmouth is a most charming, vibrant and attractive Seaside Resort, many families come back year after year

Great little place
The property was as described. Perfectly comfortable for a family of 4 for a short break. The beds were comfy and the shower was good. It was surprisingly very quiet, even though it was a terrace. With two teenagers a second bathroom/toilet would have been a bonus and parking around the location was quite a challenge as our car was too big to fit in the parking space. We did think our car would be too big, so to be fair we expected to have to find a parking alternative when we read the description. The location was really good as you could walk everywhere you needed to. It was great to be able to get the train to Exeter for a day out. I would recommend this house and we would be happy to stay again if we visit the area.

Laurel cottage from 68 yr old view
Good communication with agents. Collection of front door key a short walk to pub. Back entrance by key box. Back garden nicely enclosed for our Westie dogs. House located close to the town and seafront making it ideal for walking. Moving the car more difficult as on road parking hard to find but parking at rear of house available for one small car as advertised. All facilities available in the house I describe as comfortable not luxurious.

Lovely property
Laurel cottage was a beautifully presented property approx five mins from the heart of Exmouth. Parking in Exmouth is terrible (we have a people carrier so couldn't park at the property) but I was able to park all week next to the train station in the long stay for £25 which was just under ten mins walk from the cottage. Bedrooms were very nice and spacious.

A well presented house (n need of tlc).
Cleanliness of property was poor. A number of issues were reported to the local agents. Also reported included broken window catch and leaking toilet with chain becoming disconnected.

Beautiful property by the seaside
We had a lovely stay at Laurel Cottage. It had everything we needed to for a comfortable stay. The cottage itself is beautiful with stylish furniture. We particularly enjoyed sitting out in the garden, which was a safe enclosed space for us to let our dog out in to. The cottage is really close to shops and the beach, a perfect location.

About the host

Hosted by Laura Farrant

Host profile image
Hi - My name is Laura and I manage the renting of Laurel Cottage on behalf of my daughter and her family who are currently living abroad for the next few years.
I live in the next street with my husband who is an Artist, 3 cats and 2 dogs! We love living in Exmouth, my husband spent all his childhood holidays here staying with his uncle who was a well-known Exmouth boat-builder so we moved here so he can sail his boat and paint the beach scenes for which is has become renowned.
Our daughter and her husband are not able to get over to UK for as long as they would like so we are letting the house for other families to enjoy.

Why they chose this property

The house itself is really attractive, my daughter has spent a lot of time and money renovating to make it a comfortable, family holiday home. It really has a 'coastal feel' . The location in the centre of the town is brilliant - you can walk everywhere, be it to shops, the beach or the station. You don't need to use a car at all.

What makes this property unique

I just love period buildings and Bicton Street where the house is , has so many. All the houses used to be shops and no 22 was lived in by Lace-makers. We also like the Bicton Inn, at the bottom of Bicton Street, which is a Freehouse , they don't serve food but there is regular musical entertainment, Folk Singers, Blues, The Shelly Beach Boys, Classical Music - its a great pub to have on your door-step.
