Country tranquility: 400 yrs old, 6 bedrooms, sleeps 14-16, private pool/sauna

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
6 bedroom, private pool & sauna, splendid isolation only 20 min away from town

The 300+ square meter, 400 year old Mas on the west edge of the Plateau de Coiron overlooks vineyards and lavender fields, and on the horizon, the Cevennes. Luxuriously restored first in 2002, then again in winter 2011 with a new pool deck, a jacuzzi, new Finnish sauna, new indoor and outdoor kitchens, and a complete renovation of the adjoining barn, the Mas sleeps 16+ in its six large bedrooms - five with queen size beds, one a bunk style room that comfortably sleeps up to six children in four beds. Five of the bedrooms overlook the 10 x 5 meter salt-water swimming pool and adjacent 6-person jacuzzi, the Ardeche river valley, and the sunset horizon 80km to the west. The remaining bedroom on the first floor is wheelchair friendly, with a handicap access shower and toilet. There are three full baths, all with separate toilets (continental European style). The kitchen is fully equipped, ready for the epicurean gourmands, and as of spring 2012, there is a second, outdoor kitchen next to an outdoor dining pergola. The private garden is surrounded by raspberry and blackberry bushes, and basil, rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, verveine abound...

Morning Markets:

Saturday: Aubenas, Les Vans, Privas

Sunday: Alba-La-Romaine, Vals les Bains

Monday: Vogüé – (July and August)

Tuesday: Jaujac, Largentière, Viviers

Wednesday: Joyeuse, Villeneuve de Berg, Privas

Thursday: Vallon Pont-D’Arc

Friday: Jaujac, Thueyts, Ruoms

Evening Markets (summertime!)

Tuesday: Villeneuve de Berg, Les Vans, Vallon PontD’Arc

Wednesday: Aubenas

Thursday: Vals les Bains,

Friday: L'argentière

Sunday: Joyeuse

Our favorite places:

Balazuc – Beautiful, and great place to swim. Much less crowded than Vallon Pont D’Arc. Other water sport favorites are the streams that descend from the Massif Central – towards Antregues, and Le Puy. Pont de Diable is great – go early to beat the crowds.

Villages: Our favorites include: Alba-La-Romaine, Miribel, L’Argentiere, St Pierreville, Avignon, Viviers, Uzes, Vals les Bains

Ardeche is the world chestnut capital. The beams of the house are chestnut, many of the trees outside are chestnut. Visit the 'Museum de Chataignes' in Joyeuse. Enjoy 'marron glaces' (candied chestnuts), or simply a salad l'Ardechoise (with chestnuts & goat's cheese!)

Bourganel – Ardeche’s local beer – you can tour the brewery in Vals-les-Bains. They make lager (blonde), and then several local varieties; chestnut, blueberry, miele de chataigne, verveine. Closed on Mondays.

Vineyards - There are many local vineyards, and local 'caves', (collectives) in the villages. Southern Ardeche is home to the Cote du Rhone appellation, the oldest wine growing district in France...try the Grand Ardeche from Louis Latour. You can visit Latour’s chardonnay caves in Alba-la-Romaine.

Caves - There are huge caves and spectacular grottos, majestic valleys, canoeing and white water rafting, spelunking, mountain climbing, gliding and parasailing, and on the many quieter streams, fly fishing. Nearby is 'la Grotte Chauvet', evidence of one of the earliest European settlements.

The house is gorgeous and the view is truly breathtaking.

We came for christmas with friends and seven kids. We were prepared to have a not so relaxing holiday but the house is so huge and so well designed that everyone found his place.

We made beautiful walks to the village and in the mountains and in the evening, the children were quietly watching a movie before going to bed (bunk beds, they loved it) just nextdoor.

As for us, we did the same thing every night : sauna, walk-in shower and a glass of rum in front of the fireplace, it was heaven !

The Old French Cottage

What a beautiful setting and lovely house. Everything is as described and better! The Ardeche is stunning particularly the gorge and Pont du Diable and the house in such a peaceful area. My young kids loved Firestone, the neighbour's dog, and the pool. The information you sent us was spot on. I will happily recommend this property to friends. Thank you for a superb fortnight. An amazing home holyday with a breathtaking view

  • 5 of 5

A second stay off season in this beautiful mas. Despite the unstable weather, we were able to enjoy the new jacuzzi on the terrace sipping lovely cocktail after a relaxing sauna. A perfect home for a holiday with friends and family.

Owner's Response: Dear Gilles, Many thanks for the kind words. It is really nice to hear that even during the off-season, you were able to enjoy the house and its surroundings. This is the reason we added the jacuzzi as well as the swimming pool heater so that our renters could more fully enjoy the place throughout the year. Regards Rosa

Charming, amazing scenery and region

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful and charming property. The view and sunsets are breathtaking. 100km+ of unobstructed nature view. A unique place. The property is very well maintained and has a homey personal touch, it shows that Brett and Rosa really care for and love this place. the kitchen and equipment is top notch and well maintained. The region is wonderful. In the summer peak as beautiful and charming as provence without the crowds. So many activities (go karting, acrobranche, river rafting, hiking) and lots of charming villages with great food in the area.

We will be back!

Quietude and charm

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for one week in May 2012. We were very happy with our stay. We were travelling with our 9 month old baby as well as 2 other small children and the house was quite convenient for that. I would recommend this property for families who are interested in outdoor activities, as the region is well known for its hiking, kayaking and cycling. I would also say that it is good value for the quality, as the area is not as popular with foreign tourists.

The house itself is located in a quiet village; we heard none of the neighbors the entire time we were there. The house is spacious, with a large pool area and a big lawn overlooking the sunset, which was beautiful. There are many plum trees on the property which looked like they would deliver wonderful fruit during the summer. It was great having the pool and lawn there for the children to run around in. There was even a small garden which we were able to pick fresh herbs from.

The rooms were large and comfortable, with plenty of closet space. It was a bit chilly while we were there but the heating worked well. We did a lot of cooking and everything in the kitchen worked well. We were only a group of 6, but the house could have easily fit more, and I understand the barn next to the main house is going to be converted into more rooms.

We were able to do some lovely hikes within a 30 minute drive of the house. Along the way there are many beautiful chestnut trees; during the fall this area is famous for its chestnut products, which we unfortunately missed. It was easy to visit the local markets for ingredients for cooking, and there are grocery stores in the next main town.

Overall we were happy with our stay and would consider staying here again if we were to return to the area.

Intimate immensity

  • 5 of 5

Gaston Bachelard spoke of this idea in Poetics of Space, when we experience vast beauty and warm comfort within the same space, and this thought kept coming to me during my visit. From the edge of the pool there's more than 180 degrees of uninterrupted view of stunning rolling mountains. The home is incredibly large, spacious and solid yet still warm and inviting. There are all kinds of nooks to hang out in and read a book or spaces to gather together. It is beautifully designed yet still very natural and relaxed. This is probably down to the hosts who are generous and welcoming, and who take care of every detail. This is clearly a home not a house, and a very special one. The space is very private and totally quiet. If you need a reason to leave the pool, natural beauty and good company, there are also great markets, restaurants and fun activities dotted all over town. Evenings are best spent over long dinners followed by a sauna and dips in the pool then laying flat on one's back looking up at the sky literally filled with stars. Magical.

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with Ardeche. After many years of living in dense urban environments in Asia, St Laurent sous Coiron was the perfect remedy. Fresh, open, peaceful, slow-paced. When we bought the property it was with the intent to start using it immediately, but with some part of the house we could renovate, and put our own 'stamp', or personality into the house. The renovations of the barn took over two years...but it is worth it.

Ardeche is home to one of the world's most celebrated ancient caves, the Grotte Chauvet. In April 2015, a €55 million replica of the cave opened in Vallon-Pont d'Arc, 45 minutes south of our home in St Laurent sous Coiron. It is amazing. This is a highly accurate reproduction of the closely guarded Grotte Chauvet, which was granted World Heritage status last year and which has never been open to the public.

Visitors to the site will see more than 1,000 faithfully reproduced paintings and carvings, including 425 charcoal or ochre drawings of animals and hand prints dating back up to 36,000 years, while experiencing the smell, humidity and even stalactites and stalagmites of the original cave. Even the temperature has been set to match that of the original, which has featured in a documentary by Werner Herzog, which you can see here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=46&v=HL2d3gNZBz0

Each August, in the valley just below St Laurent sous Coiron, the village of Lussas hosts one of France's most important documentary film festivals, the Etats generaux du film documentaire. More details on their website:

The official Ardeche tourism website is well done and full of useful information:

Ardeche is among the most tranquil areas in France (the only department in France with no rail or Autoroute), yet it is still easy to access by either air, TGV, or by road. The Valence TGV station is only two hours from Paris or CDG Airport, and the car rental agencies (Avis, Hertz, Eurocar, National, Alamo) are conveniently located next to the station. The mas is a beautiful 60 minute drive from the TGV station. Coming from the north, you'd take Exit 16, Loriol, on the A7 Autoroute de soleil, and then the D104 up to the Plateau de Coiron. From the south, via Montelimar, you'd take the Route de Teil and the N102 direction Aubenas. We will give you detailed driving instructions.

Nearest airports: Nimes - 135km, Lyon -150km, or Montpellier -180km

Try Google Earth (maps.google.com). Look for the pool. If you search for “Dazy, Saint-Laurent-sous-Coiron, France”, you will land just north of the house.

Facilities

From the Owner

There is really no way to put 'the view' into a photos. From the 5 bedrooms facing the pool deck, and of course, from the pool itself, you have an ... enormous sky - a 180 degree panorama overlooking the Ardeche valley, and to the south, over 100km away, you can see the mountain ranges that are just off the Mediterranean coast. We had no desire to be closer to the crowds, the noise, and the traffic of the cote d'azur. At night, there is so little light pollution that you can see the satellites passing overhead...even more fun when you have just come out of the sauna, and are lying face-up in the pool.

Notes:

  • The new sauna is accessible from both inside and outside, near the pool. Meter-thick walls keep the mas cool during the summer, and warm during winter. As the mas is at 550m elevation, it is high enough in the summer to beat the severe heat of the valley, but hot enough to enjoy a dip in the pool. Have a sweater onhand for pleasantly cool evenings. The downstairs bedroom is ideal for anyone with access challenges - there are wide double doors, no stairs.
