About the property

5 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, refurbished kitchen and bathroom. Large patio.

Moonfleet is a detached house that comfortably accommodates 10 people. The kitchen and family bathroom have just been fully refurbished. There are 2 bedrooms upstairs and 3 more downstairs. It is possible to vary the beds so you have either 4 doubles and 2 singles or 2 doubles and 6 singles. The double aspect lounge / dining area is over 12 metres (38 feet) long with plenty of room for all. A large patio faces south and is a real sun trap. There is a large garden to play and explore in, plus a gate at the top to a secluded footpath that takes you to Lulworth Cove or joins up with the South West Coastal path.

I have managed holiday homes in Lulworth for 25 years. We have lived here since 1990 and Moonfleet was our family home. We now live next door but one and rent Moonfleet out for holiday lets. We have decided to manage these bookings ourselves and hope to bring a more personal and helpful touch to visitors to this area.

We love West Lulworth for different reasons. My wife used to come to Lulworth as a child with her parents. I came here with a Geography field trip. We moved from Greater London when our children were young, escaping to the country!

What makes this house unique

Moonfleet is very near Lulworth Cove but far enough away from the busyness of it. You can stay at home in seclusion or you can walk, bike or travel locally to most of the top tourist attractions on Dorset. Then within 30-40 minute car journey are nearly all of the large Dorset towns and fantastic countryside. Moonfleet is an excellent centre for so many different holidays - family fun, relaxing, sport, bird watching and walking. Shopping, pubs, cinemas, theatres, National Trust sites are all nearby. And when you drive - you generally just drive with little traffic to hold you up. Not least, there are many opportunities to enjoy a Dorset Cream tea.

Moonfleet is a detached house with a large south facing patio and natural garden in a quiet lane in the pretty village of West Lulworth. Bindon Hill, above the fields behind the house, separates the house from the sea; it is only a short walk to the famous features of Lulworth Cove, There is a footpath at the top of the garden which takes you down to the Cove avoiding the main street. Durdle Door (a bit further) and The Fossil Forest which are on the World Heritage Coastal site: these take you back 135 million years to the time of the dinosaurs!!. Durdle Door, another outstanding coastal feature, is a short drive away or a stimulating walk over Hambury Tout. Here you can also join the South West Coast Path towards Weymouth or Swanage. . At the cove there are a number of cafes, restaurants and a pub plus a fish shop which supplies freshly caught local fish. The Lulworth Cove Heritage Centre provides interesting insights into the history and geography of the area; there is a geology and fossil section and displays of smuggling and sailing. You can hire a kayak and venture out beyond the headlands of the Cove or take a ride in a rib to Durdle Door.

Eleven out of fifteen of the most popular attractions in Dorset, listed by Trip Advisor, are within a 30 minute drive. Monkey World at Wool, The Tank Museum at Bovington, Tyneham Village, Corfe Castle, Wareham and Dorchester, both historic market towns, and the seaside resorts of Swanage, Studland and Weymouth. There is a ‘pick your own farm’, farm shop, garden centre and delightful café at East Holme just 10 minutes away. At Wareham, which has a weekly market on Saturday mornings, you will find a large leisure centre, including swimming pool, tennis courts and gym, two supermarkets, art gallery, numerous shops and cafes and the River Frome. There is an RSPB bird reserve with lots of walks at Arne, a short drive from Wareham. Boat rides on the river and around Poole Harbour make a great day out. Brownsea Island, in the centre of Poole Harbour, is a must. You can picnic, walk, sit on the small beaches or, if you are really lucky, see a red squirrel. The National Trust runs a full programme of events– plays, family trails, guided walks – in case that tires you out there are 60 benches where you can just sit and stare at the wonderful views.

At Weymouth, a traditional British Georgian seaside resort, there are lots of things for children and adults. A beautiful sandy beach with Punch and Judy, very safe swimming, trampolines, sand sculptures and rides will keep the children happy for hours. Unrivalled panoramic views can be seen from the Weymouth Tower (53m high), the viewing capsule rotates slowly so you can take it all in. Weymouth is also home to the Sea Life Adventure Park. Swanage also has a wide range of attractions, one of the most popular is the Steam Train which takes you to Corfe Castle. This iconic medieval castle, run by the National Trust, is a favourite haunt for adults and children alike. Discover 100 years of the castle’s history and take part in some of the action packed programme which runs from April to September. There are very good teashops and model village too. Swanage also has a large country park at Durlston with fascinating exhibitions, shop and café. You can see a variety of wildlife and birds, you may even see dolphins or puffins!

Our local county town, Dorchester, has a large weekly market on Wednesdays, lots of shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and arts centre, pubs, museums and Roman Town House. Near Dorchester at Tolpuddle you can visit the Martyrs Museum, with exhibits that explain how the martyrs struggled for survival on pitiful wages and why they decided to form a union. It charts their transportation to Australia and their eventual homecoming as freemen.

For a more relaxing holiday you can sit and enjoy our south facing patio, use the barbecue and enjoy the peaceful location. We have a large garden where children can explore, make camps and play. If you enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing, golfing, gliding or kayaking all of these are available nearby. We have lived in the area for 25 years so can give you lots of advice about things to do. There are many more attractions - stately homes, Thomas Hardy's Cottage, Maiden Castle, day trips to the Channel Islands. Just too many to describe here but we are very happy to help. We live just two doors away so always on hand.

There are good local shops in Lulworth and nearby villages.The shop at Winfrith, a short drive away, was awarded ' The Best Village Shop in Dorset in 2014' . At the Cove you can buy fresh fish caught by a Lulworth fisherman. There are also specialist and organic outlets in local garden centres. You can also order home delivery from all the main supermarkets and get fish and chips here or order 'take aways' . There are local markets in Wareham (Thursday and Saturday) and Dorchester (Wednesdays) . Various larger supermarkets in Wareham, Weymouth and Dorchester.

Great accomodation, very welcoming hosts and lovely weather

For once the bank holiday weather was great and added to this the cottage is well presented, clean and covers all your needs. On arrival Giles and his wife (the hosts) were very welcoming and informative about the local area. We had family travelling from different locations and the cottage was well equipped for us all. It is a great place to have a holiday. Will hopefully be back again next year. Location of this cottage is ideal for the beach and great coastal walks, convenience store and local pubs.

Lovely family holiday. Easily accommodated 10 of us. Home in a central place on the Dorset coast lots to do and see. Giles (owner) very helpful. Lovely walks to Lulworth cove and Durdle door.

A perfect house in a lovely location

As a diverse family group of 10 people including 2 children under 3, it isn't always easy to find a house which meets all our needs. This house was a delight - extremely spacious, clean and well-equipped - and the owner was friendly and supportive. It's hard to think of anything that could have improved it! The kitchen contained everything we needed to cook and serve and we enjoyed the garden and the patio. All in all, we were thrilled with our choice of holiday house and hope to return in the future.

Great cottage in a lovely quiet location

We stayed in this cottage as a short break to celebrate a big birthday. The ages of our group ranged from 4 to 84 and everyone enjoyed it immensely.

The cottage is lovely, with a recent refurbishment done very well. The photos don't do it justice! It had lots of room throughout, plenty to fit 10 people if the weather isn't too good. We were lucky with the weather so could make the most of the lovely big garden and patio.

The cottage is about a 20 minute stroll to Lulworth Cove so perfect for everything it has to offer, without being too close on hot summer days. Just 2 minutes up the road is the Castle Inn for those evenings you fancy some nice pub grub.

All in all a great cottage, which we hope to come back to some time in the future.

Short breaks are available during the year (minimum stay three nights). During peak times they may only be booked within two weeks of the required date. Peak times are July to September, October and May half terms, Christmas, New Year and Easter.
A weekend break is charged at 2/3 of the week for three nights. Extra nights are 10% of the full weeks rent. Monday to Friday are offered at 4 nights for the price of 3.Full weeks changeover day is Friday
