Family friendly farmhouse with private pool and panoramic views across the Gers.

Overview

Property

Updated: 09-Dec-2016
5 bedroom restored 19th century farmhouse nestled high on hillside with garden

Labeau has a truly wonderful position. Sitting high on a hillside, it commands a view that is quite breath-taking. You can see for miles across rolling green wooded hills, rivers, valleys with golden yellow sunflowers and maize, against the stunning back drop of the snow capped Pyrénées. It is accessed by a small lane, only 2 minutes off the main road. Its neighbours comprise only of the tiny medieval church of Vicnau, which was recently renovated and a handful of small houses positioned further down the lane. Labeau is nestled into the hillside with enough surrounding land to provide plenty of outside space for sitting and relaxing or for children to play and explore. The swimming pool is positioned just off the main living area so perfect for lounging by and safe for those with small children. Since the views are glorious, we chose to keep the grounds open to the countryside, but trees have been planted around the pool area to ensure privacy.

The house itself comprises of an open plan dining/lounge /kitchen area created within the original barn. The living area comprises of comfortable sofas and armchairs, around a log fire,The kitchen is open plan and well stocked with pots and pans, crockery and all kitchen utensils. There is an oven, separate microwave, dishwasher, under counter fridge and tall fridge. Coffee machine, kettle, toaster, hand blender etc are all included. A large extendible dining table can seat 10 comfortably. There is a games and drinks cupboard, TV with UK channels, radio, DVD and Ipod deck. Patio doors on 3 sides make it light and airy. From here, an open tread oak staircase leads up to the first floor galleried master bedroom. This has its own lounge area, en suite bathroom and overlooks the pool and countryside to the west and the covered barn to the south. The views from here are stunning.

There are 4 other bedrooms in Labeau. A small twin bedded room at the back of the house is ideal for young children being so close to the living area. There is a separate WC adjacent to it. In the old farmhouse, the remaining 3 bedrooms comprise of a spacious double height twin bed with en suite shower room, and a small double and a large double that share the second bathroom. A baby cot can be provided.

Al the house has been tiled throughout and furnished simply but comfortably. one of the benefits of Labeau, is that all the accommodation, apart from the master bedroom, is on ground floor. It is perfect for children and also for those with limited mobility. The double height rooms and windows give the house a lovely feeling of space and light. All windows have shutters and the old stone walls ensure that the house stays warm in winter and cool in summer.

About the Owner

We live and work in London and were first introduced to this beautiful part of France back in the late 80's with a visit to a friend. We totally fell in love with the area. It felt like it had remained slightly in a time warp. The countryside was so beautiful and peaceful and the locals so friendly that we found ourselves wanting to go back again and again. Whenever we visited, It proved to be a therapeutic escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. We decided to try and find a place of our own in the area where we could take our own family to experience true countryside and let them experience the freedom to roam and play in safety.

Labeau is such a stunning place to stay. In a totally unspoilt part of France, Labeau sits perched on a hillside with the most spectacular views towards the Pyrenees. The house is very private, with only one or two houses in the vicinity, and yet it is only a short drive from the main road, so great for access to shops and restaurants. The house is well proportioned with great, big sized rooms, and lovely bathrooms. The kitchen/dining/living area is the social hub of the property which has a lovely relaxed feel and a great place to all get together. The terrace to the back and the pool are just delightful, and fab to watch the amazing sunsets from. If the weather goes against you, you still have the covered open barn area to bbq and play table tennis. A lovely place to chill out, relax and enjoy the great food and markets of the region. Highly recommended.

Great house Stunning location

  • 5 of 5

We have used Owners direct for many years for skiing and summer holidays and can say that Linda was one of easiest and most helpful people we have dealt with. The house and grounds are spacious and well equipped. all felt very homely such that we felt relaxed and immediately at home. plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms laid out in such a way that they can be private or not as required. The outside views are incredible especially if you get a clear day view of the Pyrenees and perfect for star gazing. The pool is large with a decent deep end and most importantly has that lovely chlorinated sparkle without the ill effects of the chlorine on the skin. Perfectly located for visiting towns and villages of the region including Pau which was surprisingly pleasant. Pyrenees an hour away. We would thoroughly recommend Labeau as great value for money and a lovely place to spend a holiday in this region.

Fantastic House Fantastic Location

  • 5 of 5

Before we arrived we felt at ease having plumped for this property. From a selection of about 8 properties that we selected as posibilities, Linda (the owner) was the fastest at responding to us and proved to be by far the most helpful owner we have ever deal with in many years of booking holiday rentals. She furnished us with as much information as was neccesary re the property such as finding the place and how the oven etc worked. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she answered all of my queries promptly. Upon arrival at the house, it certainly was as described and was indeed a family friendly property. The living area is open plan and this is great as you can engage in conversation still whilst preparing evening meals. The children made use of the dvd in the evenings and we found the whole of the house to be clean, tidy and also easy to keep that way too due to the tiled flooring throughout the ground floor.

Outside the pool was of a great size and the children spent most of the days splashing around in it. The rest of the garden was beautiful and the views are spectacular right across to the pyranees. There is also a barn area which houses a table tennis table and a dart board also. The house is well equipped and has plenty of plates cutlary and glasses and also has the all important dishwasher.

The area is beautiful and there is much to see and do in the area. We planned to do lots but invariably ended up lounging by the pool and staying local.

Auch is a short car ride away and has a large supermarket as you enter it. We spent one afternoon having a look around the old town and had lunch in one of the many restaurants there.

We went over to a small waterpark at a place called Gondrin one day and had a lovely day there. It was inexpensive but worth the visit if you have children.

All in all we felt that this property was perfect for a large family such as ours (5 children and my mother also) and had a very familiar feel about it and we were made to feel at home by the helpfulness and kindness of Linda. If this is an area that you are considering coming to then I can recomend both the area and this house in particular. Everytime we get in the car now and head off on the M1 our 2 and a half year old asks if were going to 'The House' I am sure that one day we will be answering Yes as we all had such a great time and it is such a great property.

Location

From the Owner

We spent many months searching in and around the Gers at different times of the year.. We drove down many lanes, through numerous valleys but couldn't find a house that gave us the feeling we were looking for. Until one day, just before returning to the UK, we heard of a property that had just been put on the market that had a rather special position. I remember pulling off the main road, rounding the bend and seeing the semi derelict building sitting high on the hill. As we turned down the rutted track and drew up outside, we stopped to take in the view. It was simply breathtaking. Just miles and miles of uninterrupted green fields and total silence. This was what we had been searching for. Undeterred by the scale of the renovation, we could immediately envisage the tumble down barn restored and integrated into the old farmhouse and the dark damp rooms filled with light. We immediately decided we would buy it! We set upon a slow renovation, visiting as and when we could, over several years gradually turning the humble ruin into a relaxed holiday retreat for our family and friends. It was important for us to find a property that could give us plenty of space to invite guests but not to be so large that it would be a burden. The beauty of the layout of Labeau,is that it provides just that. Over the years, one or two small homes have been built on the hill, providing us with neighbours who help to look after both our house and our family when we are visiting. They are lovely friendly people who have made us most welcome and continue to help our guests.

This area is rural France at its best. Home of Foie Gras and Armagnac and steeped in history, this beautiful farming region has something for everybody, from tiny medieval hillside villages to busy market towns and all are set amongst meandering rivers, forests and fields. Set against the backdrop of the Pyraneean mountains,,this area is quite special.

Labeau is a ten minute drive away from Auch, the capital of the Gers. Boasting an impressive 13C cathedral, it has excellent facilities including shops, restaurants and an excellent twice weekly market held all year round featuring an array of local produce. Being in the heart of an agricultural community, there are a variety of medieval villages in the vicinity, each with their own markets that are well worth a visit, All have an abundance of fruit vegetables, cheese, meat etc but also specific regional specialities such as Foie gras and Armagnac.

Toulouse is just over an hour away and is a fabulous city well worth visiting. It has some wonderful shops and restaurants, some great museums and regular cultural events from live music to film and opera. Children can be entertained by activities such as Go karting or Lazerquest, or a visit to the quaint little zoo. Toulouse is also home to the growing aerospace industry and visitors can take tours of the factories and even see the massive Airbus 360 being constructed..

If you prefer your day trips to be less about city life and more about nature, then a trip to the Pyranees is a must.

In the summer months these mountains are a beautiful place to visit. If you are feeling active then take a canyoning trip. High up in the mountains you are guided through a long meandering river canyon, discovering natural water slides, deep jump pools and spectacular sights at every turn. Take a drive, following winding mountain passes, to discover one of the many land-locked crystal clear lakes and have a waterside picnic. Or follow the breathtaking Valley de Rioumajou, with its tall pine trees, flat green pastures and winding rivers. This is where the locals go for summer picnics and lazy afternoons in the sunshine. It all makes for a beautiful day out. You will also find the mountains a great spot for river rafting, canoeing, hiking, climbing and mountain biking..

In the winter, it is possible to ski. There are a number of resorts, all within an hour and a half to 2 hours drive from the house offering a good range of skiing for families. Some of the resorts are especially good for beginners.

Closer to home, there are many attractions and activities for all ages. This area boasts several excellent golf courses; Golf du Château de Pallanne, Golf d'Auch-Embats and Golf de Gascogne for example.are all within an easy drive. There is horse riding, tree climbing, water skiing, tennis and many other sporting activities..

Culturally there are various events held throughout the year that attract both locals and visitors from afar. From the world renown jazz festival held in Marciac each August to the country and western festival in Mirande each July, there are always events nearby. The region has many traditional French fêtes and festivals throughout the year. Auch is also home to one of France’s most famous circus schools. Each year, in October, it holds a three day circus festival, with acts from all over the world descending on the town to perform for visitors and locals alike. During weekends over the summer months one village or another will be ‘en fete’,These 2-3 day festivals are a great opportunity to drink the local wine and sample local produce whilst mingling with the locals.

For those who simply want to relax and take time to slow down a little, enjoy the food and wine, clean air and beautiful scenery, then Labeau is just what you need.

Facilities

From the Owner

We have furnished the house simply but comfortably in order to provide the kind of environment that means you can kick off your shoes and relax as soon as you open the door. Small children love the freedom of pottering around the garden and fields with no fear of traffic. The pool is a fantastic bonus for all ages affording hours of fun. When the weather is hot, most guests spend a large part of their day lazing by the pool or relaxing on the terrace. We have spent hours just watching the birds swooping across the fields or gazing across to the mountains watching the weather fronts drifting across the valleys.. It really is quite magical. If the weather is not so good, the covered barn with its table tennis table and barbecue means we can eat and play outside all year round. It is rarely cold in this part of the Gers, but we added a wood burning stove and this always keeps the house warm and is lovely feature for cosy nights in. The evening sunsets are quite beautiful and star gazing is a must! The lack of light pollution and position high on the hill means that the night sky provides a i stunning display on a clear evening.
