About the property

Cottage in Cornhill on Tweed, Northumberland, England - Nestling beside our wood, within walking distance of the River Tweed

Oxendeanburn Cottage is a cosy, rural retreat comfortably sleeping 10/11 adults. The cottage has it’s own stone walled garden with secure gates, secure storage for bikes in the adjacent farm buildings and access to our two acre wood with a path leading down to the small burn that gives the property its name. The garden has a BBQ and outdoor furniture for you to use. There is parking for up to 3 cars.

You can walk to the Tweed from the wood and there are several other decent walks that start outside your back door.

Cornhill on Tweed has a wonderful village shop with cafe and Coldstream - just across the border into Scotland - has a bank, large Co-op, excellent Chinese and Indian takeaways, fish and chip shop, petrol station and of course, the Guards Museum. The Collingwood Arms in Cornhill has a bar, a bistro and a restaurant specialising in locally sourced food.

In a car, you can be in Berwick or on a beautiful sandy beach in 20 minutes and either Newcastle or Edinburgh in about an hour. If your interest is in history or the natural world then the Scottish borders, the Cheviots, the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Forest are all on our doorstep and all provide excellent days out.

Coast/Beach:

Our favourite beach is just 20 minutes away by car and is quiet and stunningly beautiful. If you prefer a little bustle Seahouses is about 50 minutes by car and provides shops, pubs, places to eat and boat trips to the Farne Islands.

Travel:

Newcastle and Edinburgh airports are about an hour's drive away.

We are on bus routes to Berwick and the Scottish Borders, but to explore the huge range of historical, cultural and natural amenities you really need a car.

Distances:

Flodden Field Battle site is 10 minutes drive away and the County is dotted with castles ranging in size from the majesty of Ainwick to the ruins of Twizel a couple of miles away. Standing just below the castle, the old Twizel bridge is the finest single span medieval bridge in Britain. The Borders host a range of Festivals and events throughout the summer including some top Agricultural shows. The nearby Cheviots and the Lammermuir Hills offer wonderful walks and stunning scenery.

Excellent stay!

  • 5 of 5

Dorothy and Tony were very welcoming and the house was excellent - loads of room, comfortable and very well laid out. A separate entrance, room and enclosed gardens for the dogs was bonus, which meant that muddy feet could be dealt with well away from the carpets, which is usually a worry!

In a really beautiful part of the country, with lots of beautiful scenery and wonderful places to visit - we particularly enjoyed Lindisfarne and Eyemouth.

We would definitely recommend this house - we had a great time.

Spacious for bedrooms and a good place to take a large family.

  • 4 of 5

Hospitality A1 from Dorothy and Tony - very welcoming and helpful when needed but otherwise left us to get on with enjoying our time. We were golfing and it's an excellent base for a large group of golfers with enough bedrooms and beds for everyone to enjoy some privacy. Also great for families with access to a wood and a brook as well as a safe garden to relax in. It's off the beaten track a little with the main town, Coldstream, a short drive away with all the facilities you need. The history around the area is great. Plenty of space to dine as a family or with friends.

Home from Home

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful welcome on our arrival, our party was from 93yrs to 7yrs. The house was homely and very comfortable we didn't feel as though we had to walk on eggshells and touch nothing. Lots of games for the children provided and lovely walks. There were a couple of good pubs within a 10 minute drive and fab local shop.

We would go back at the drop of a hat.

Fantastic Property for Kids

  • 5 of 5

The property is in a great location and has all the facilities needed. The exceptional part for us was the attached wood for the kids to play in. We included tag, wide games, night games and going through the tunnel of doom!

The owners were really helpful and we even met Tony at the Mill where he helps. He gave us a tour that was very good and informative. A great holiday.

Lovely property. Amazing hosts

  • 5 of 5

We arrived here Friday night. What a lovely welcome Dorothy and Tony gave us. Made us feel very welcome and also made us feel that we could treat the cottage as our home for the duration of the stay.

The cottage itself is clean and the beds are really comfy. The living room has loads of seating. (One thing to note there is no DVD player). The boot room / utility at the end of the house is great when you're coming in with mucky kids and a mucky dog.

The woods are a lovely surprise and the walk through them is lovely. We didn't have the greatest weather but it didn't stop us enjoying them.

On the last night we thought we'd roast marshmallows outside. A quick note to Tony and Dorothy as voila. Wood. Matches and fire lighters ready in a jiffy.

Kelso swimming baths is handy for the really bad days and they have inflatable sessions that the kids really enjoyed.

Holy island worth a trip as well. (Tide times in the cottage)

Overall. I cant recommend this place enough.
