Cottage in Cornhill on Tweed, Northumberland, England - Nestling beside our wood, within walking distance of the River Tweed

Oxendeanburn Cottage is a cosy, rural retreat comfortably sleeping 10/11 adults. The cottage has it’s own stone walled garden with secure gates, secure storage for bikes in the adjacent farm buildings and access to our two acre wood with a path leading down to the small burn that gives the property its name. The garden has a BBQ and outdoor furniture for you to use. There is parking for up to 3 cars.

You can walk to the Tweed from the wood and there are several other decent walks that start outside your back door.

Cornhill on Tweed has a wonderful village shop with cafe and Coldstream - just across the border into Scotland - has a bank, large Co-op, excellent Chinese and Indian takeaways, fish and chip shop, petrol station and of course, the Guards Museum. The Collingwood Arms in Cornhill has a bar, a bistro and a restaurant specialising in locally sourced food.

In a car, you can be in Berwick or on a beautiful sandy beach in 20 minutes and either Newcastle or Edinburgh in about an hour. If your interest is in history or the natural world then the Scottish borders, the Cheviots, the Northumberland National Park and Kielder Forest are all on our doorstep and all provide excellent days out.

Ideal countryside base to explore Northumberland

We needed a large enough cottage to accommodate the needs of two families with children. The layout (with its two bathrooms) meant that our families could enjoy their own space when needed. It is fully equipped with everything you need - right down to dishwasher tablets and barbeque fuel. It's a quiet location. The owners live in the separate house next door, and are very helpful when you need anything. Most attractions are within a 40 minute drive of the cottage, making it an ideal base. There's a fantastic, quiet beach only 20 mins away, which is much easier to get to than Bamburgh. Had a great week here!

Great property, brilliant location, can't recommend enough.

Three families spent a week here in early August. The layout worked really well for us - a triple room (with toys) for the three youngest girls, a twin room for the teenage boys and three doubles for the adults. Note - I think some of the rooms can be reconfigured if you need it.

It's well kept and well equipped - plenty of glasses, cups, bowls, etc. There's a utility room at the end with a sink, fridge, washing machine and tumble drier ("use it as much as you like").

Some other reviews mentioned the reclining chairs in the living room. I didn't think this too much of this, but everyone (including me) thought they were great. Some of them rock too (the kids loved this). Really nice at the end of the day.

The location was great - there's a road nearby, but it's hidden by big hedges and we barely noticed it. The younger kids loved the private woods - enclosed and secure, so happy for them to go and play by themselves. A patio outside, lawn, seating area, barbecue and plenty of other space to just potter around in. Plus outbuildings to stick the bikes in.

We found plenty to do - Seahouses for seaside stuff (chips, slots, crazy golf); Berwick for a walk round the walls; Etal and Norham castles (plus light railway); Walks along the Tweed or into Cornhill.

The local shop in Cornhill is very well stocked - we walked there with and had lunch. There's a bigger co-op 10-15 mins drive away (note - in Coldstream, Scotland, so not subject to England's restrictive Sunday trading laws).

The owners live next door and were great. They summed it up well when they first showed us round, "you can see as much or as little of us as you like". They provided useful advice on places to go and events (we were lucky enough to be there for Coldstream Civic Week/Ridings), but generally they left us to get on with it.

A final word from the teenagers - both of whom were extremely worried about the internet - They were pleasantly surprised. Whilst not matching the speeds they are used to at home (in cities), it was pretty reasonable much of the time.

Thanks Tony and Dorothy - we had a great week. We're talking about coming back next year.

Totally relaxing holiday clean and fresh cottage. Lovely setting.

The cottage and garden were lovely,the welcome gift was a really nice thought but what topped everything was the hosts Dorothy and Tony nothing was a bother for them, we had a fantastic stay,would definitely recommend it.

Great all round

The cottage was clean, warm, very well equipped and had plenty of space for our party of 9. The layout is a long corridor with rooms either side and this worked really well for us with 4 teenagers. Everybody had their own space and it was very comfortable. One of the bedrooms had plenty of toys, Lego, a rocking horse and books for children. There was also a big bookcase full of proper books for grown-ups (much better than the usual holiday cottage selection)!

The location was great for our visits to Berwick, Lindisfarne and Bamburgh, and we went on a lovely walk straight from the cottage along the Tweed and up to the top of the Twizel viaduct. The weather wasn't quite good enough for sitting out, but there was a pretty garden to sit in, and the adjacent wood leading down to the stream would have been great for younger children. Our teenagers preferred the many reclining chairs in the living room and made plentiful use of the Wifi! The local shop in Cornhill was within walking distance and was brilliant - lots of home baking and gifts as well as basic essentials.

Dorothy and Tony couldn't have been more helpful - they gave us advice on walks and where to eat, and lent us an OS map for our walk. As well as tea and coffee, milk and a bowl of fruit, there was even a bottle of prosecco waiting for us in the fridge! We felt very welcome and had a great stay.

A great holiday..

We have just arrived back from our stay in "Oxendeanburn Cottage".. We arrived to a warm welcome from Dorothy and Tony, the bungalow was lovely and warm. We were a party of 8 adults, 2 teenage children and dogs.. There was ample room for us all, a very well equipped kitchen plenty of tea coffee sugar soap & dishwasher tablets etc.. towels for the dogs and also a nice surprise in the fridge!!🍾󯠼󯭾 The lounge had reclining chairs and settee's which were great to relax in after a day of adventures,and we had plenty of them.. We had days out, Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne, Edinburgh and a boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the puffins all excellent.. We all ( including teenagers & dogs) had a wonderful time, lots of laughter in the woods with our water pistols, and playing games around the table after our evening meal.. I would gladly recommend to friends and family..

perfect accommodation for two families

We stayed here with our good friends for a whole week and found the accommodation to be absolutely perfect for two families, especially with children. It was exactly what we had hoped for when we booked. The property had tons of space to explore, including a secret tunnel, woods and walking trails and the accommodation was very well equipped and truly felt like home. Dorothy and Tony were very pleasant, helpful and down to earth and went the extra mile to make us feel welcomed and cared for by providing things like toys, laundry soap, maps and suggestions of where to visit, and even a jug of milk and cookies to start us off. The location of this cottage allowed us to see and do a huge variety of things, including beaches, a trip to Edinburgh, Lindesfarne, Norham and Dunstanburgh Castles while still providing a very cozy, rural space for 'home' days. We would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who asked; thank you again for everything, Dorothy and Tony! If we vacation in the UK again, we'd be back in a heartbeat.

Coast/Beach:

Our favourite beach is just 20 minutes away by car and is quiet and stunningly beautiful. If you prefer a little bustle Seahouses is about 50 minutes by car and provides shops, pubs, places to eat and boat trips to the Farne Islands.

Travel:

Newcastle and Edinburgh airports are about an hour's drive away.

We are on bus routes to Berwick and the Scottish Borders, but to explore the huge range of historical, cultural and natural amenities you really need a car.

Distances:

Flodden Field Battle site is 10 minutes drive away and the County is dotted with castles ranging in size from the majesty of Ainwick to the ruins of Twizel a couple of miles away. Standing just below the castle, the old Twizel bridge is the finest single span medieval bridge in Britain. The Borders host a range of Festivals and events throughout the summer including some top Agricultural shows. The nearby Cheviots and the Lammermuir Hills offer wonderful walks and stunning scenery.
