About Karen Griggs

We bought The Old Forge (and The Garden Shed) in August 2013 in a poor state, and since then have worked hard to restore both the property and the gardens. We love the results and are sure you will do too.

We love the space it gives us for our animals, and currently have two guinea pigs, three rabbits, eight chickens (although that number changes regularly!) and a small dog called Bob.

Why Karen Griggs chose North Yorkshire

It's a stunning property, with the most exceptional gardens, in a brilliant location! It has all the benefits of living in a city but with countryside all around.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived and communication before our trip was really helpful providing places to eat and visit. The garden shed was absolutely beautiful, very well maintained and had everything needed. The owners really had thought of everything from toiletries and super soft towels to kitchen utensils and even a chimenea to keep us warn on the patio. It really was a home from home. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and we were free to wander and say hello to the chickens and rabbits. The surrounding area is very quiet and peaceful but at the same time not far (15-20 mins) from York. It's an excellent location for exploring. We (my husband and I) have stayed in lots of different accommodations from fancy hotels to camping but this has to have been one of our favourites. It really made the weekend a mini holiday. We loved it.

Absolute tranquility

  • 5 of 5

An absolutely stunning location, Karen makes you feel so welcomed and as if she has known you forever. The welcome pack was amazing and the fresh eggs from her chickens mmmmmmmmmm. This was a recuperation stay for my hubby who had had major abdominal surgery in April and it is just what the doctor ordered. Saturday 2nd Sept was a sunny warm day so we decided to stay at the cabin and chill, we used the Summerhouse and read books together, it was so relaxing. Karen brought the chickens over for me to meet and allowed me to hold them. I am so glad that I found this little hide away, we will certainly be back and hope to stay a bit longer.

Thank you so much to Karen and her family for letting people enjoy her wonderful shed and gardens.

Highly recommend people stay here if they just want to totally relax in the comfort of a shed and a wonderful family.

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay, the Garden Shed is beautiful, everything we needed was there. Hot shower, comfortable bed, log burner for those chilly nights and a beautiful garden to sit in of an evening. Just lovely for a nice relaxing break. We visited York and Castle Howard which are only a short drive away and also as recommended by Karen the Crown and Cushion, beautiful for lunch. We are looking to visit again in November this year to visit York Christmas Market. So nice to have somewhere we can leave the door open and our Shih Tzu Benni is safe in the garden.

Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

The description of The Garden Shed sounded almost too good to be true but it wasn't. As other reviews have suggested it is hard to find fault and the only thing I can think of is that the pen for writing in the guests book could maybe do with a new refill :)

This is the perfect place to stay when visiting the area and we were made to feel completely at home by our host, Karen.

Just wish we could have stayed longer and made more use of the amazing gardens, but will be back and have recommended to all our friends.

PS Thank you for the eggs Karen, they were lovely

Idyllic retreat

  • 5 of 5

Nothing is too much trouble when you stay at The Garden Shed - there are so many little touches that show how much the owners care and how much they want your stay to be special. We had a lovely few days - and will definitely be back!
