About the Owner

We bought The Old Forge (and The Garden Shed) in August 2013 in a poor state, and since then have worked hard to restore both the property and the gardens. We love the results and are sure you will do too.

We love the space it gives us for our animals, and currently have two guinea pigs, three rabbits, eight chickens (although that number changes regularly!) and a small dog called Bob.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived and communication before our trip was really helpful providing places to eat and visit. The garden shed was absolutely beautiful, very well maintained and had everything needed. The owners really had thought of everything from toiletries and super soft towels to kitchen utensils and even a chimenea to keep us warn on the patio. It really was a home from home. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and we were free to wander and say hello to the chickens and rabbits. The surrounding area is very quiet and peaceful but at the same time not far (15-20 mins) from York. It's an excellent location for exploring. We (my husband and I) have stayed in lots of different accommodations from fancy hotels to camping but this has to have been one of our favourites. It really made the weekend a mini holiday. We loved it.

The Garden Shed - a great little getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at The Garden Shed. It had all the facilties that we required and was very warm and welcoming when we arrived. We were greeted by a welcome hamper - (highly recommend the malteser slice!) and at night it was extremely peaceful and quiet. We did a park and ride into York and also visited Castle Howard while staying here. My wife and I would definately recommend to others and would love to stay again sometime! Thanks Karen!

The Perfect Garden Shed!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a 5 night stay at the end of October in the beautiful Garden Shed. It had everything you would need even down to treats & a ball for our labrador Charlie. It was toasty warm & cozy with the log burner. Karen was a perfect host - and came to the rescue when Charlie decided to have a sneaky dip in the pond! The gardens were beautiful and very peaceful (even though lots of shopping is only 4 miles down the road & York about 8 miles). Loads to visit within a reasonable distance. It was our first visit to York and we will definitely return. Would like to recommended it but also want to keep it a secret. Thank you once & again and see you all soon xx

It's a dogs life.

  • 5 of 5

I recently enjoyed a short break with my mummy and daddy, I was provided with a blanket and bowls and some tennis balls (they disappeared though and I think the resident pup stole them) and some yummy biscuits for me. I had a lovely time sniffing things out and relaxing by the log burner, mummy and daddy said it was well equipped and they received a welcome basket but I wasn't allowed any of the lemon drizzle cake! We were centrally located and I went to the beach and on day trips to Thirsk and Hebden Bridge, if you get your parents to bring you here I can recommend the Rusty Shears in Whitby (once you have had one of their dogachinnos you will never drink plain water again) the Bliss cafe in Thirsk where you get a free sausage and the Lamppost cafe in Hebden Bridge for a pup cake and a dog beer. I also enjoyed a swim in the pond at the Himalayan mountain garden but apparently I wantn't supposed to do that. Overall I had a lovely time and would recommend to other doggies.

Wonderful little hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we arrived at The Garden Shed we were already planning a trip back! Such a beautiful place with lovely surroundings. The Shed itself is fully equipped with everything you could need, Karen really has thought of everything! Wonderful furnishings and very well maintained. Close to shops if you need them and only 20mins from York. Karen was very attentive and we loved the welcome hamper, such a lovely touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Garden Shed and couldn't recommend it more!

A wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin made our holiday into one of the best short breaks we have ever had! It is spotlessly clean and furnished to a very high standard with everything you could possibly need!

The welcome hamper is amazing. We had fresh strawberries, home made flapjack, wine and freshly laid eggs from their own hens. Even our dog got a snuggly blanket and a packet of treats!

Karen and Adam are really helpful- Karen even emailed us lots of suggestions of places to go before we arrived so we could plan our stay. One of our favourite days was her suggestion- park at Fraisthorpe beach and walk along the beach to Bridlington for fish and chips and then walk them off on the return walk to your car. I think it's about a 6 mile walk in total.

Returning to this amazing little cabin each night made our holiday very special!

Thank you very much Karen and Adam from Suzanne, Robert and Boo xx
