About this property

17th Century Stone Built Cottage With Tiled Roof - Former Cider Barn

This is an opportunity to stay in a comfortable, cosy cottage situated in a quiet rural valley rich in wildlife, birds and wild flowers. It has its own garden looking on to the original cider orchard . The cottage is in the grounds of the owner's small farm of 30 acres of meadow which you are welcome to explore and picnic in. This is an area of AONB with numerous county walks straight from the cottage and nature reserves and ancient historic sites to explore. You can wander along the lanes and through the woods and probably not see a soul and yet there are two good pubs within one and a half miles of the cottages.
The busy market town of Bridport is 5 miles away with shops, restaurants, leisure centre, Electric Palace Cinema, museum and Arts Centre. West Bay with its bustllng harbour and the beaches of Burton Bradstock, Eype, Seaton and Charmouth are all within easy reach. There are many picturesque villages in the area and the private gardens that are open to the public over the summer months are well worth visiting. If you are interested in geology you have the Jurassic Coast and fossil hunting to enjoy and the proximity of the SW Coastal Path.
The cottage is attractively furnished and well equipped. It has a beamed living room with a log burning stove and French window into the garden. A modern fitted kitchen, double and twin bedded bedrooms, bathroom with bath, lavatory and over-bath shower. The wood burner heats radiators if required and there are electric night storage and convector heaters.
All linen and towels are provided. There is a smart TV and a DVD. The cottage has free WiFi and Netflix access. The kitchen has an electric cooker, fridge, freezer and washing machine with dryer. Natural spring water with UV filter. Garden table and chairs. Dogs on request charges at £26 per week. .xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx .

Having spent half my life as a naval wife, I was determined to settle down in our lovely county of Dorset and in 1983 my husband and I discovered this thatched farmhouse with a few acres and a barn which had previously been used for making cider. We acquired a flock of sheep and enjoyed renovating the farmhouse and the barn, now named Barn Cottage. This cottage has been let for holidays for several years and has been very popular.

Why they chose this property

The surroundings of the cottage are spectacular and we feel really privileged to live in this beautiful area with its rolling hills and valleys. Although off the beaten track, the beaches and shops are only some 5 miles away. Bridport is a thriving market town with much entertainment available.

What makes this property unique

There are numerous walks straight from your front door taking you through fields, woods etc with usually a pub somewhere along the route. Aim for Mapperton Manor (used for scenes in the latest version of Far from the Madding Crowd), Powerstock Common, King John's Castle (hunting lodge), the Iron Age fort at Eggardon Hill, and the Kingcombe Centre with its wild flower meadows.

The beaches at West Bay, Eype, Seatown (Anchor Inn) , Charmouth (for fossils), Lyme Regis and Burton Bradstock (the Hive Beach cafe), all along the Jurassic Coast, are easily accessible. Portland Bill and Abbotsbury (for the swans) are well worth visiting.
