About Jennifer Carpendale

Having spent half my life as a naval wife, I was determined to settle down in our lovely county of Dorset and in 1983 my husband and I discovered this thatched farmhouse with a few acres and a barn which had previously been used for making cider. We acquired a flock of sheep and enjoyed renovating the farmhouse and the barn, now named Barn Cottage. This cottage has been let for holidays for several years and has been very popular.

Why Jennifer Carpendale chose Dorset

The surroundings of the cottage are spectacular and we feel really privileged to live in this beautiful area with its rolling hills and valleys. Although off the beaten track, the beaches and shops are only some 5 miles away. Bridport is a thriving market town with much entertainment available.

What makes this cottage unique

There are numerous walks straight from your front door taking you through fields, woods etc with usually a pub somewhere along the route. Aim for Mapperton Manor (used for scenes in the latest version of Far from the Madding Crowd), Powerstock Common, King John's Castle (hunting lodge), the Iron Age fort at Eggardon Hill, and the Kingcombe Centre with its wild flower meadows.

The beaches at West Bay, Eype, Seatown (Anchor Inn) , Charmouth (for fossils), Lyme Regis and Burton Bradstock (the Hive Beach cafe), all along the Jurassic Coast, are easily accessible. Portland Bill and Abbotsbury (for the swans) are well worth visiting.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A little slice of heaven in Dorset. We have just returned from a lovely relaxing week in an idyllic cottage tucked away in the countryside"

"Wonderful homely cottage, perfect for getting away from everyday life. We stayed at Barn Cottage with our 2 year old Jack Russell dog and had a lovely week"

"Beautiful cottage in a wonderful location: we'll definitely be back. Comfortable and charming cottage in an extremely peaceful and stunning location. Ideally situated for exploring the West Dorset and East Devon coastline and its historic towns."

The owners were very welcoming and friendly. They provided lots of information on local places to visit and eat and were extremely willing to help out in any way. I would highly recommend this cottage to stay in and explore the magnificent Dorsetshire countryside.

The photographs did not do the cottage justice far more beautiful being there

  • 4 of 5

We went with our son,his girlfriend and their little daschund! We were met by Jenny and Richard. The cottage the beautiful gardens and countryside are stunning! We had everything we needed there was not one thing I could think of that was not therefor our comfort and stay! The log fire was an absolute bonus as the weather was not brilliant. We had a fabulous time and when leaving Jenny and Richard told us about their wonderful life experience. Such lovely kind and generous people! They should write a book. Thank you for making our stay a truly memorable time with our family! We will definitely be back. Fabulous. Mills family 20-24 May 2017

Perfectly idyllic

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage in lovely surroundings. Welcomed by the owners, who are extremely friendly and will assist as much as they can. As a family of 4, with a dog, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the future. Plenty to do in and around Bridport and Dorset generally. The cottage was clean and well equipped for all our needs. Thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful location away from it all, enabling us to recharge our batteries.

Holiday at Cider Barn

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a week at Cider Barn. It was a superb week from start to finish. Lovely cottage, great hosts, wonderful location - so much to see and do - and when not doing all that we chilled in the great setting of Cider Barn. We enjoyed it so much we've already booked to go back in October.

We would highly recommend this cottage - it was just as we expected. Well decorated, very clean, great facilities - shower, wifi, fully equipped kitchen. The owners were lovely - there to help and have a chat but very unobtrusive. The cottage was easy to find - the satnav took us straight there. Great location to visit both the east and west areas of the Jurassic coast.

We really couldn't have wished for more from our week away.
