About the property

Cottage in Auchenmalg (between Glenluce & Port William), Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland - Superb Location, A Stone's Throw From Lovely Sandy Beaches

The cottage stands on the roadside with a walk of a few yards across the lawn, over the road and immediately onto the beach. Adjacent to the cottage is a small field belonging to the property which allows for parking. A large expanse of firm sand allows easy walking and safe bathing. The area is rich in flora and fauna with a wide variety of habitats in the near vicinity. The villages of Glenluce and Port William together with the larger towns of Newton Stewart and Stranraer provide all the usual shopping needs. Local places of interest include the Mull of Galloway, Isle of Whithorn, Portpatrick, Galloway Forest Park, Logan Botanical Gardens, Culzean Castle and many others. Craignarget Cottages have been owned by the family since 1963 and are used regularly by family and friends as well as being let out as holiday accommodation. Herons are frequently seen fishing the larger rock pools and buzzards, ravens, falcons and harriers can often be seen and heard soaring the hill behind the cottage. In recent years, otters have become an increasingly common sight on the foreshore. Craignarget Cottage offers a rare opportunity to relax and recharge the batteries with family days on the beach, reading in front of the fire, watching the ever changing seascape, enjoying the wonderful sunsets, star gazing in crystal clear skies, exploring the trails in the forests, hills and moors with their diverse flora and fauna, or just pottering along the empty single track roads.

This link may take you to the "instant street view" cottage location, although it is some years out of date now - the red corrugated iron shed was replaced about 4 years ago! www.instantstreetview.com/@54.825737,-4.714197,90h,2.8p,1z

About Judith McIver

Owned by the McIver family, we live in East Yorkshire but have a local caretaker who keeps an eye on the cottages for us. We have been letting out the cottage for many years, using the income to steadily up-grade the facilities from a pretty basic starting point.

Judith McIver purchased this cottage in 1960

Why Judith McIver chose Dumfries & Galloway

Craignarget Cottages have been in the ownership of our family for more than 50 years. When first purchased in 1963, neither cottage had electricity or water and Cottage No. 2 (your accommodation) had a sitting tenant. Miss Hyslop collected her water from the well which can still be seen over the wall about 100m up the road from the cottage. She had been in the service of the previous owners who farmed the local land and lived out her retirement in the cottage. She used to cut the front lawn on her hands and knees with a pair of scissors! On her death in 1965 cottage No. 2 was renovated and extended by the addition of the bathroom.

A little gem discovered by chance

  • 5 of 5

Craignarget Cottage is one of two cottages, owned by the same family, situated just yards from a flat, safe beach. The cottage is light and airy, with a pleasant living room, a spacious bedroom and a recently refurbished bathroom. The kitchen is well equipped, as you would expect with it being used by the family.

There is lots of useful information in the cottage giving details of interesting places to visit, things to do, places to eat. Craignarget is a wonderful place to visit if you are in need of rest and relaxation (that's why we go) or if you want to be more active. There is lots to do in the area and this lovely cottage provides the perfect base for touring around. There are shops in nearby towns, with larger supermarkets in Newton Stewart and Stranraer. We have been staying at the cottage for many years and we are still discovering things to do and places to go.

A perfectly relaxing week!

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have visited this property and looked forward eagerly to our visit. We weren't disappointed - the cottage was as great as we remembered it. Beautifully decorated, well equipped and such a magnificent position - almost on the beach and with wonderful views across Luce Bay to the Mull of Galloway and even the Isle of Man on a clear day. Being keen gardeners, we were well placed to visit many Scottish gardens - Port Logan, Dunskey Castle, Glenwhan, Castle Kennedy for example. We were fortunate enough to enjoy good weather throughout much of our stay which meant we ate outside much of the time. We are looking forward to our next visit when we can once again escape for a period of peace and relaxation.
