About the Owner

As busy South Africans, our annual trip to France allows us to escape from it all. Belinda amongst other things, is chair of a charitable children's organization and Mark spends much of my time working all over Africa . Le Logis is the one place where we can safely get away from it all, unpack our bags for a few weeks and spend quality time together.

Original review edited for space .....We have been going to Brittany and the Vendee for a number of years and this was easily the best property we've stayed at. …. we opened all the shutters, . we let the abundant sunlight in (The Vendee benefits from its own microclimate enjoying around 2,600 hours of sunshine per year, almost as many hours as the South of France. This compares to typical 1,490 hours of sun for London! ) to reveal a wonderful, cosy, clean and typical french cottage.

The view from the deck over the tranquil river Vie is fantastic. It's a really peaceful setting. The deck itself is marvellous. We spend most of the time here, having breakfasts, BBQs and sometimes lunch here. Equally we enjoyed sitting in the traditionally furnished living room. Other guests have spotted interesting wildlife, like rare birds and bats. Yes there are insects too, but you're in the middle of nature here, so this is hardly surprising. The cottage is really uncomplicated. Yes, it's old, but that's the charm of it. Yes, it's a little bit tricky to park the car, car,(reversing in is the answer). The house is big enough for a family of four and is also great for couples. It's really uncomplicated and easy to live in. If you want to eat outside, the kitchen is right there. And if you want to go in at the end of the day, you just close the doors and the shutters and you're in the bright and welcoming living room. It's got all the equipment you might want. We had no need to talk to the caretakers, but they did a great job having the house clean and ready for our arrival. The area is really quiet, with the occasional car driving down the one-way road outside. The road that crosses the bridge visible from the house (another lovely touch) is a bit busier, but you don't notice it. The owner of the house is extremely helpful.

Location-wise it's fantastic too. Coex is only a 10 minutes drive away with a small supermarket, Super U, several outstanding bakeries, a nice butcher and a fish shop. There are several beautiful villages within 10 minutes drive, ....A little bit further is St Gilles Croix de Vie. This is a typical seaside town with a remarkable number of good icecream shops and some good restaurants We had an absolutely fantastic stay. We would not hesitate to recommend this house to other people. The answer to "would you want to stay here again?' is a wholehearted yes.

Le Logis de Dolbeau

  • 4 of 5

Very comfortable house. Lovely atmosphere. Great base for exploring, and loads of places to visit and discover. The proximity of seaside villages/towns means you're spoilt for choice for beaches and entertainment. Nearby Chateaux, interesting churches, and available activities are not in short supply. All in all, something for everyone. A good selection of restaurants are within a fairly short drive.

I found parking in the small drive easy ! Remember to turn right out of the drive when setting off - the One Way sign on the main road isn't very clear.

Local walks, and the river nearby, and at Apremont, are fascinating, especially if you like nature, wildlife, and/or photography. There are plenty of fishing opportunities too.

A very enjoyable holiday, with help from the owners if needed. Tomtom was more than useful..... A wealth of information about specific eateries etc, is available in the house, with some very helpful observations from previous holidaymakers.

The property was very clean, and customer service A1.

Very relaxing with lots to offer

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 weeks and had a lovely time. We were fortunate to have the most amazing weather which enabled us to explore the local area. Having 2 children, age 5 and 6, we didn't want to have to travel too far to find fun and we did not. The coast is close by and there is a wonderful lake with a beach at Apremont which is only about a 10 min drive from the house. The house is well equipped with everything you would need.

A great holiday home with character.

  • 5 of 5

Le Logis had everything we needed for our holiday. It is located in a quiet position with trees and birds and a stream at the back of the house.

It is very peaceful and there is plenty of garden furniture for you to relax on the decking if you want to spend the day at home reading or sunbathing, having a barbecue etc.

It is ideally situated for visiting places of interest and there a some absolutely fabulous beaches to drive to. There are many fleamarkets and antique fairs to visit and there is a very helpful book in the house telling you all the dates and locations, vide greniers and brocantes are very popular and can be quite an event in the villages and they have music and food, beer and wine.

After a day out its great to get home to Dolbeau, its comfortable and welcoming, everything you need is there. I've cooked some superb meals on the Calor gas cooker. I never used one before I went to Dolbeau but it's great and I like using different things, it's all part of the holiday.

There is tv and a dvd player, wifi ,washing machine and tumble drier, fridge freezer, the beds are comfortable, lots of hot water, nice shower, somewhere to park your car.

The owners are exceptionally nice people who, although they don't live in the area are easy to contact if you have any questions.

We have enjoyed 3 fabulous holidays at Dolbeau and everything has always been fine.

Owner's Response: Mark and I are thrilled that you once again had an enjoyable stay at Le Logis Dolbeau. Sharing our home (which we don't get to visit as much as we would like ourselves) with families who get us much enjoyment out of it as us is heartening. Also knowing that our guests take such care of our home in our absence is wonderful! We look forward to welcoming you back !

Good quiet location

  • 3 of 5

Very helpful owners, easy to contact via email and always responded promptly. Typical French cottage in a very quiet location. Easy drive to some beautiful areas, beaches, villages ect. But nowhere to walk to. We found the location slightly difficult to find, not helped by the road sign being covered. The cottage has a small but adequate kitchen, open plan to the lounge. French doors lead out onto a large deck area. Good size bedrooms, clean and good bedding. Good shower with lots of hot water. It can be a bit cold in the house, but heater available. We were there in the beginning of September and enjoyed very warm sunny weather in the main, but struggled to find anywhere to sit outside in the sun, the deck was nearly completely in the shade most of the time. The garden is very small being part of the drive for parking the car. Again mainly in the shade. Maybe in high season there is more sun? There is a garage for parking but would only be big enough for a small car, with bikes at the back of the garage our estate car would not have fitted in. Easy parking on the drive.

Good Wi Fi connection. Satellite TV, but only one English Channel and that was a news channel. There is a DVD player.

A lovely and very good restaurant in the centre of Apremont, next to the castle that is well worth a visit. Coex has a supermarket and is easy and quick to get to. We loved the area and would definately return, but I am afraid not to this house, as for us a sunny garden and English TV is important, just personal choice.

Location

From the Owner

Its was a friends search for antiques in the warehouses, auction rooms and brocante markets of western France that first introduced us to the region. We fell in love with the French countryside, it's charming villages, food markets, long sandy beaches and timeless way of life. In many ways, it reminds us of our home in the rural Midlands of Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa.

picturesque village of Apremont. Towering over the village are the remains of the Chateau d'Apremont and the water tower from which there is a superb panoramic view of the valley of the river Vie and the surrounding countryside.

The steep steps carved into the rock face near the bridge lead up to the church with houses built into the cliffs. Within the village there are some impressive mansions as well as quaint cottages. Under the bridge is the old wash house and from nearby one can take a boat or canoe trip down the river Vie. From the right of the bridge upstream half a kilometre is the dam that holds back the river Vie to form the Vendée’s largest lake some 166 hectares in size and a veritable playground for both visitors and wildlife. During the season the lake is used for and all manner of water sports including swimming with boats also for hire. Nearby there is a restaurant to cater for the inner self.

Waking to the birds calling from the trees across the stream, a visit to the Boulanger in Commequier, an evening glass of wine in Apremont , walking along the promenade of St Hellier before choosing a beach to lie on, buying fresh produce from markets in surrounding towns or just sitting out on the deck reading a book, are amongst the simple holiday routines that we look forward to.
