Overview

About the property

STUNNING House. Quiet PRIME LOCATION on tree-lined road, yet a few mins walk to town, harbour, station & 7 mins walk to beach

Lovely, lemon-coloured modern detached house, stylishly decorated and furnished. Drive for three cars and charming front & back gardens. The property has the advantage of windows on all sides, enjoying uplifting light all day.

The designer house is much admired for its contemporary décor, relaxed feel and superb location. Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac dominated by trees and birdsong, it is, nevertheless, only a few minutes walk to: the train station; the harbour with its eateries including Rick Stein's restaurant & chippy; handy tescos; pretty yachts; the town centre with its attractive shops, art galleries, cafés, bars, restaurants and piers.

The lawned front garden boasts mature barked borders planted with a diverse selection of well known and tropical specimens, including a rare red yucca. Near the front door, a table and two chairs provide a pleasant spot for a morning coffee. The garden to the rear is similarly lawned with mature borders which include black bamboo. The lawn leads from a large patio directly behind the house, accessible via the back door. New extensive rattan furniture adorns the back patio with its luxury padded sofas, chaise end, and glass-topped coffee table - a perfect sun trap in which to lounge with a good book and some sun tan lotion or socialise with friends, snacks and a gin and tonic. At the back of the lawn is a sturdy table and two chairs to enjoy a cup of tea in the afternoon, out of the sun and sheltered by the back wall with its luscious camellia and bay tree. A new bench with table is ideally placed to the side of the garden against the garage wall, to catch the last rays of the evening. Please do make full use of the pretty well-stocked herb garden easily reached just beyond the kitchen door.

Leading from the newly decorated hallway are the front room with new leather furniture, funky comfy bright armchair, 42" HD Sky TV plus Netflix and Sonos sound system, the dining room with sofabed at the back of the house and the new white and chrome kitchen. Upstairs a central landing leads to a WC, one king sized bedroom with plentiful fitted storage and TV, one bedroom with double bed and a desk with Mac screen for attaching personal devices, and a third bedroom with triple bunk (double bed with single bunk bed above) and new white wardrobe/chest of drawers, and a bathroom.

About Julia Johnston

Number four of six children, I was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to a musical/teaching family, moving 'south' to study French and Drama at Manchester University. After living there for eight years, I spent two years in the US, pursuing a career in acting. I ended up in London, where I lived for thirteen years.

Though my professional background is mainly in French and teaching pupils with hearing impairment, I have been involved in acting and music all my life. I made the move into the writing world about ten years ago; having started with plays, I'm now an author of Young Adult/crossover novels. You're welcome to sample my writing which you'll find in the house...!

My husband works in telecommunications and is something of an inventor/entrepreneur.

We have two grown up daughters.

Julia Johnston purchased this house in 2007

Why Julia Johnston chose Truro & Falmouth area

Working increasingly from home, my husband and I took the bold move of setting up home in the beautiful town of Falmouth, out of the swing of the sea (in one way anyway!).

I regularly visited friends over many years and my love for the seductive, friendly town grew stronger as time passed. Having only experienced city life, I was a tad apprehensive about moving to a small town, but it has been the best thing I've ever done! It truly feels like being on holiday all year round and is a flourishing, vibrant, peace-loving place.

The mix of people is surprisingly diverse: creative types (anything goes here especially dress-wise!), academics, highly skilled labourers/farmers, members of the yachting fraternity, students, those with a zest for life, the list goes on...

What makes this house unique

The house is in a much desired peaceful street, being very close to town yet in a secluded area, a tree-lined walk way running through centre of the cul-de-sac. Its position means the house looks onto trees instead of houses, a rare feature of falmouth dwellings, where space is at a premium. A driveway for three cars is an extraordinary perk, too, in a town where free parking is scarce.

It is the first place I've ever lived where you absolutely do not need a car; everything you could need or desire is so close by. From the property, you can easily walk to: town, art galleries, harbour, Events Square, train station, beach, docks. A Tesco Extra, a cinema, a theatre and a gym are also minutes away.

Colourful joyous festivals are never far off, regularly punctuating the calendar as they do.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you so very much for letting us stay at your beautiful abode!" Mark Cocksedge, London

"What an amazing place your house is in and what an amazing house. We were worried that we would not manage without a car, but all the walking distances you explained were spot on. One day we went to the maritime museum, then continued to town where we had lunch at a restaurant looking over pretty boats in the harbour. After spending too much money in the gorgeous shops, we changed at the house for the beach and walked round the headland past the castle to Gilly beach then we spent a delightful time swimming and ice cream. We went back to the house to change again and we loved the Gilly restaurant so much we went back for dinner and sat in the sun at the side till 9 o'clock at night! It's hard to believe all that entertainment is minutes walk away and all that was in one day!" L and T Johnston, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

"I loved your house. Being able to escape and have quiet time with a good book and a gin and tonic so close to town was a miracle and something for which I am extremely grateful." Enid Richemont, London

Everything we could have asked for

  • 5 of 5

If you ever need a lesson in how to stock your house, look no further than this lovely property. Being gadget-mad ourselves, the Sonos sound system, ipad in the kitchen and Macs in pretty much every room gave an air of walking into a chocolate factory with a golden ticket.

The kitchen has everything you could need - from kneedle and thread to washer/dryer, juicer and coffee-maker. The bedrooms are very comfortable and spacious, and the dining room is a feast for the eyes, with its wall of fascinating books, a few of which I have been inspired to go out and buy myself.

The gardens in front and back are peaceful and well-kept and the town is a pleasant five-minute walk away - easy to pop out to collect fish and chips from the amazing Harbour Lights.

We got married while we were there in August, and we couldn't have wished for a better environment to complement our stay. We shall hopefully return!

Dirty and very untidy

  • 1 of 5

This is by far the worst property I have ever stayed at, the cleanliness was somewhat to be desired! Previous occupants rubbish was found overflowing from various points in the garden, bathroom disgusting with a bath that doesn't drain away as it is blocked, therefore leaving dirty standing water, not nice! The property is obviously used by the owners but did not appreciate one bit that in particular most if not all of the cupboard space in the main bedroom is marked private and either bolted shut or cable tied! I do not go on holiday to live out of my suitcase for the week! We have some shocking photos of the state of this place, truly unbelievable! The host was very communicative up until the point I sent her a text regarding the cleanliness of the property to which I heard nothing further.

Owner's Response: So terribly sorry that this trip was riddled with disappointment. I apologise profusely. It upsets me as I like everything to be lovely for my guests. The most damning remarks reflect problems which were beyond my control. Using Flint Holiday Home Management was an experiment which has gone horribly wrong; they have let me down profoundly. I take on board all the complaints and assure others that those responsible for the poor state of the house no longer work for me.   I received, ‘…we have just arrived, all good, lovely house!’ so I hope that means some aspects of the house were okay. I wrote before arrival, ‘I'm particularly keen to know if the house is spick and span as I haven't got to check out the new cleaners’ so I appreciate this was done—just a pity it was too late. This review is the first I’d heard.   After being assured all was good on Saturday, I presumed that included the cleaning. One text asked about the TV, another the next day about the heating; I was happy to answer, though the info was in the welcome pack. I like communicating with my guests so this was not a problem; I only mention it because no problems were raised in these texts. It is, for sure, utterly unacceptable to have encountered these problems, but Flint Management and/or Bill, the handy man, could have dealt with it all immediately had I been aware.   I’d asked for feedback on the cleaning, but I totally accept that there was no obligation to do so. I did receive, on Wednesday evening, a photo message which I couldn’t open. I realise now, having been in touch with the guest who kindly emailed me the content, that this was a complaint, but I never saw it. Deepest apologies again. I hope it can be seen that since I asked specifically for feedback, it would have been a bit weird for me to have suddenly gone quiet when I got a response. I simply had not seen the photo message. I should have texted saying I couldn’t open it, but I thought it would be a photo of something pleasant like sitting in the garden and that it wasn’t urgent or I’d have been emailed or texted! My mistake and I’m sorry.   I apologise, too, that there was deemed to be too little space for clothes in the main bedroom. Regarding ‘most if not all of the cupboard space’ being locked—one cupboard and two wardrobes are locked, leaving one wardrobe, three chests of drawers and two bedside table drawers unlocked. I appreciate the comment, though, and will open up another wardrobe for the future.

Fab Falmouth home from home

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our week in this welcoming, well-equipped and comfortable home. Ideally situated for walking into Falmouth to mooch round the shops, with lots of eateries close at hand. Lots of things to do close by, or within easy reach by car, train or boat. Julia and Martin ensure visitors feel welcome, with lots of nice little touches that make you quickly feel at home. Would gladly visit again and recommend highly to others.

So good my head exploded (Charlie - 5 yo)

  • 5 of 5

We had a really nice family break here in May/June 2016. Very nice house in a fantastic location across from Falmouth Town station. Sonos system was great. Town centre and Gyllingvase beach are both easily walkable. Falmouth is a wonderful place to visit and this was a great base. Our son Charlie certainly liked it!
