About Matthew aplin

I live with my husband and three children in a cottage just down the track from Bartlehill Cottage. We have a smallholding and keep ponies, dogs, sheep, pigs, chickens and rabbits. On request (if you have children), you may visit the animals, which in spring time means bottle feeding baby lambs!

Where possible, we provide a basket of home produce to our guests, for example, free-range eggs and our own bacon, as well as other locally sourced goodies.

I work as a dentist and my husband works as a podiatrist in the nearby town of Kelso. We absolutely love this area and hence knew it would be a perfect place from which to base a holiday cottage.

Matthew aplin purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Matthew aplin chose Scottish Borders

We live in this area and consider it to be one of the best kept secrets in the UK. It truly has something for every pursuit.

Whether you enjoy natural heritage, there is the magnificent Floors Castle, Abbotsford (the home of Sir Walter Scott) and the Borders Heritage trail.

For the family, there is Harestanes Country Park, The Hirsel, The Hay Farm with its heavy horses, Ford and Etal mini-railway and of course the beach (all within 30 minute drive). Kelso Races is also a rather special day out.

For the more active minded, you can walk and cycle numerous routes direct from the front door. There is also tennis, golf courses and swimming (15 minutes drive). Finally, Saint Foin stables (5 min drive), offers hacks or even hire of a horse for the famous (or infamous) Common Ridi

What makes this cottage unique

Bartlehill Cottage is down a disused farm track and being surrounded by fields and farm tracks, is perfect and safe for children and pets.

It has been stylishly refurbished to the highest standard with the aim of comfort and relaxation in mind. It also has the added benefit of breath taking views overlooking the Cheviots from an elevated position.

In summary, it is the perfect base from which to enjoy and explore the delightful Scottish Borders.

Excellent property

  • 4 of 5

Excellent property with lovely views. Comfy bed. Had awful weather for late June, so couldn't enjoy sitting in the spacious rear garden. Generally well equipped, but one or two surprising omissions, not enough hand towels, and not one salt cellar in the kitchen (Had to buy both😕?). If weather had been better, would have enjoyed it, as it was, came home a day and a half early. Not the fault of the property.

What a lovely cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The property was equipped with everything we needed for a very comfortable and enjoyable holiday and when we arrived we realised that it was as good as the description on owner's direct website. We took a wrong turning on the way there using our satnav - the neighbour seemed to think this is probably a normal occurrence - luckily we realised what we had done and 'retraced our steps' then went a little further on to find the correct place to turn off! Matt had sent us old directions through the farmyard which had actually changed so we did struggle a bit to get the last few yards - when we arrived at the cottage and linked into the WiFi we found that he had sent us an email that morning to tell us the new directions through the farmyard - we had left home before the email was sent and don't have internet whilst out and about! The property was very clean and extremely well maintained - the best one we have ever stayed at. Everything in it is good quality and very tastefully put together. We would recommend this property to anyone! One downside is the fact that there is nowhere to walk from the actual cottage except out the way we drove in - this seems to be because it is surrounded by farmland. There is a lane opposite which is on one of the photos on the website and we had assumed that we would be able to go for evening walks along it but it is actually private and we found that slightly disappointing. In Kelso we used a coffee shop called the Hoot and Cat which we really liked - friendly staff and nice food and not too expensive. The Chain Bridge Honey Farm is one of our old favourites and it didn't let us down again - there is lots of interesting stuff about honey and bees and also the local area. They serve lovely home baked cakes and scones from the double decker bus cafe. A bit further afield there are Berwick upon Tweed and Holy Island to explore - to avoid disappointment make sure you check the tide tables before setting off for Holy Island. We can recommend Neptune Fish Restaurant in Seahouses for a good fish and chip meal - if you want a take away and have small appetites they are willing to split one meal onto 2 trays. There are lovely beaches around Bamburgh for walks or family days out!

Just what you need

  • 5 of 5

A very well restored and surprisingly spacious and practical house. Just what you need when on holiday. Very clean property, fresh flowers on display, welcome pack. Stunning views and rural location but not too far from anywhere. Very good indeed. We'd stay again.
