About Mark & Denise Charles

We have lived at "La Grosterie" since 2003 moving here from Dorset with our boys. We have been converting the barn into a cottage for 10 years! It is ready now & we hope you will enjoy the stay.

We live nearby and can help with any questions that you may have. We can also advise about local attractions and may be able to assist with escorting or driving if necessary.

Mark & Denise Charles purchased this barn in 2003

Why Mark & Denise Charles chose Le Mesnil-Amand

"La Grosterie" was originally an iron works or forge and later a farm. It has also been an equestrian centre and a country house. There has certainly been a house here for a long time. It is difficult to date the buildings exactly, but there are 3 buildings shown on the 1822 map, one of which is in the same position today. The main house, however, was probably built around 1850 and originally was divided into two parts - living accommodation for people on one side and animals on the other. We do have a "resident" ghost, but his activities are limited to smoking a pipe. He seems to keep an eye on what is going on!

The house is set in 17 acres of grounds, which in turn is within a nature reserve. We have a mixture of a small parkland around the house, open fields which are harvested for hay and a wild woodland bordering the river.

The locals have told us stories about previous occupants and when certain trees were planted. The lime tree in the middle of the field was planted in the mid 1930's and the characteristic fir trees "Les Sapins" were planted about 1950.

We were fortunate to inherit many years of gardening work with fruit (Mirabells, Gooseberries, Raspberries, Blackcurrants and Redcurrants), although we had to remove the small apple orchard as it had been neglected. We are slowly re-planting the apple trees.

About 25 years ago the house and outbuildings were used by a family that bred horses, probably for "trotting" as there is still evidence of an oval trotting track to one side of the house.

The top stable building originally had 3 large stalls and has now been converted it into a "Gite". It was probably extended to enlarge the hay-loft in about 1900.

The bottom building is considerably older with more character. It provides winter accommodation for our animals and also workshops, garages and a large garden store.

This building is clearly shown on the 1822 map below.

What makes this barn unique

We were immediately attracted to the location of the property which is at the end of a 1km lane, with no passing traffic. The lack of street lights also enhanced the location for us providing an excellent view of the night sky.

We are only 12 to 15 km away from some of the best beaches in Normandy and can be there for a lunchtime picnic.

We have a large recreation lawn which is suitable for games such as badminton (net provided), football, boules, archery etc. You also have access to the large 5 hectare field which is great for flying kites or other activities needing a big space.

We can provide day kennelling facilities for your dogs so that you can go out without restriction.

Secure lock-up storage i also available for bicycles, roof boxes or other equipment.

A very comfortable home for our family with everything you could need being provided.

  • 5 of 5

We cannot fault Mark and Denise at all. The house was superbly equipped and very comfortable. Lots of toys, games, DVDs and books for all ages. A very welcome food and drink parcel awaited us from the perfect hosts who have an excellent knowledge of places to go and local events. This was an excellent place to explore the Norman/Brittany coastline.

Nice quiet location, very comfortable accommodation, fully equipped facilities and great central location. Easily accessed from Normandy ferry ports and a great spot to explore the area from, and close to the beaches.

Will be back.

Ruhige Tage in der Normandie

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to welcome this family to the Gite. They made the most of the stay and visited local attractions. They also made use of the recreation area and woodlands. Some trees provided good support for the hammock! The Gite was left clean & tidy and we would welcome them back anytime.

Delightful Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

Had a cracking stay here. The gite is well furnished and equipped, and the location is lovely. Well placed for exploring the area, or comfortable enough to chill out and not do a great deal. Hope to be able to do it again (soon)

Cosy & comfortable cottage in lovely location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our short but perfect stay at La Grosterie. The cottage is cosy, clean and well-equipped and the owners are very welcoming and helpful. It was ideally located, close to many interesting places and the beaches. We can only recommend it. It is ideal for a family holiday and we look forward to going back again.
