Charming village house with large plunge pool and stunning views of the Luberon

Overview

Property

Updated: 18-Nov-2016
Goult, Vaucluse

Maison Du Four occupies a prime position in the heart of the delightful conservation village of Goult, one of the Luberon’s most atmospheric settings.

A former bakery, this ancient house has been carefully restored over several years to provide a mix of comfort and character that make it a perfect base for a Provencal holiday. Replete with original features, from the oversize stone fireplaces to the exposed oak beams, the house stands as one of the most distinctive addresses in the area.

The house is comprised of two bedrooms and two living rooms, along with kitchen, dining area, and utility room. The second living room, which leads directly onto the terrace, has the option of becoming a third double bedroom for the duration of the stay.

Located near the top of the village, adjacent to a charming public garden and reached via a no-through road, Maison Du Four offers a wonderful sense of peace and quiet, while being only a few steps from the many amenities that the village provides.

Goult is a perfectly preserved medieval village that surely must rank among France’s most beautiful. Dominated by the seventeenth century chateau, its winding lanes and stone-hewn alleyways provide a magical setting for a holiday. Crucially, Goult remains a bustling and vibrant working village. A weekly market in the main square offers a wonderful place to stock up on local produce, while the village shop, baker’s, butcher’s and deli will provide all you need to cook up incredible meals back at the house.

If you’re looking to eat out, then the village provides several options. The popular café attracts crowds from across the region, drawn to its French classics served in the sun-drenched main square. Nearby is the Auberge de la Bartavelle, offering exquisite fine dining in tasteful surroundings. In addition, a handful of brasserie-style restaurants mean that you will never be short of dining options in the village. The surrounding area is littered with fantastic options from Michelin starred establishments to simple, rustic gems.

A Wonderful Week Stay in this Lovely Village House

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much Julian for the chance to rent your Goult house in our stay in Provence. All we wanted was to stay in a small village in Provence so we could do day trips to other villages. This we did after meeting up with our daughter from London. It's always a challenge booking something from far away (New Zealand), hoping one's instincts are right about a place from just looking online, but they were! Julian's communications were very forthcoming and clear.

We had no trouble following his instructions getting into the house. Luckily our rental car was small as I wouldn't like to enter the village with a big car with the tiny roads and tight corners.

The house was a delight. We really enjoyed the plunge pool on the hot days and the village cat making itself at home on the terrace.

Next time we come (hopefully), we will stay longer and I will have learnt the language a little more so I can have conversations with the locals.

Cheers

Frances and Barry

Beautiful Village......

  • 3 of 5

Situated in a charming historical village, next to a public garden, the house is lovely from the outside. Inside the layout is not convenient with 3 flights of steep uneven stairs and steps in and out of every room; if you like to eat outside be aware that the attractive, but overlooked, terrace is not on the same floor as the kitchen.

Reasonably clean and adequately furnished many of the fittings and furniture were in need of attention when we were there.

Do not expect "Stunning views of the Luberon" from the house - there is a single pleasant view through a gap in neighbouring buildings.

The Luberon and the village of Goult itself are very beautiful.

Such a lovely property in a beautiful village

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely week staying at Maison du Four. The house is very comfortable with everything you need. We used the Terrace a lot and our ten year old daughter enjoyed the plunge pool. The house is individual and is situated in an excellent location within the beautiful village of Goult ( close to the Windmill with wonderful views and starry skies.) It is in a quiet location up the hill in the village but is only a short walk to the bakery, bar and other facilities in the village. For us, this was a proper Luberon village- so French- but away from the tourists. We got the Eurostar to Avigion from St Pancras ( highly recommended) and then hired a car (Sixt were very helpful and the queues were shorter than the other car rental offices). Goult is about a 40 minute easy drive away but we went to the Supermarket on our way. The house would comfortably suit a family of four but an additional couple can stay in the second lounge is you need it. The owner is so approachable and helpful. He promptly answered my questions and gave us much useful advice. The Housekeeper/manager is also very friendly. We had such a relaxing time- I would return tomorrow!!!

A piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed for a week. The house is in the old section of Goult, a stone's throw from the windmill. There was plenty of room for the two teenagers. The living room and kitchen are nice and cool, while the lounge and bedrooms are bright and airy. The house has everything you might need, and an abundance of charm, even a resident, outdoor, half-blind cat. The terrace provides a lovely view over Goult and the plunge pool provides cool relief after a day of sightseeing. The village of Goult is a great base for travelling around Provence, but is a pretty village in its own right with a half dozen amazing restaurants (book in advance). One word of caution - they roll up the pavements early in Goult, around 10 pm, and the shops still close for lunch.

The owners of the property were a delight to deal with, answering my many questions promptly and offering some advice.

Excellent base to explore Provence

  • 5 of 5

We loved Maison du four. Perfect for a week's break as a base to explore Provence with nicely decorated rooms and a gorgeous terrace set in one of the least tourist focused villages (no coach parties!) we visited but with an excellent selection of restaurants to walk to. Would highly recommend, probably best suited to two or four person adult occupancy rather than six to fit comfortably. And pool is definitely just a plunge pool but certainly large enough to cool off in. Thanks for a lovely break!

Charmant dorpshuis

  • 3 of 5

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with it as soon as we saw it. When we first bought it, it was a complete ruin and we relished the opportunity to restore it to its former glory over time. We love the Luberon and this was the perfect base form which to explore it.
