About the Owner

We live in the Welsh Marches and first holidayed in Swaledale 10 years ago, we fell in love with the dale, it's people and the warmth of their welcome, the stunning scenery and it's beautiful places. We have been coming back regularly ever since and were lucky enough to purchase Throstle Nest Barn. We feel the luckiest people every time we arrive to think that we own such a wonderful house in such a beautiful setting and we feel happy to share our special place with you.

Our dog Monty enjoys the freedom of the two acre stone walled paddock in which the barn is situated, chasing bunnies, although these Yorkshire rabbits are too clever for him! He also loves having balls thrown for him from the bench at the top of our field with what we feel is the best view of the dale.

A place to escape, with amazing view

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage in a very peaceful, quiet location albeit quite remote part of the dales. The views are wonderful but best enjoyed when able to sit outside in the extensive garden. The cottage was well maintained, all mod cons, and cosy. We were glad we had a 4x4 as tracks and lanes interesting to navigate especially in the dark and the weather!

Owner's Response: Glad you had such a good time and enjoyed the cottage and the views. For the benefit of those reading your lovely review, we ought to make clear that you don't actually need a 4x4 to get to the cottage, a normal car can manage the tarmac road fine, it's just a little narrow for those not used to country lanes.

Great could not have asked for better

  • 5 of 5

This was are first visit to Throstle Nest , we was shocked,

this was the best holiday we have ever had, and as we are both in our 60s we have been to a few over the years, the accommodation was pristine you could not ask for anything better, and with all the nice little touches around made it even better, the garden or should I say field was great, our little dog loved it,

so if you are looking for somewhere very quite exceptionally clean great as dog friendly then book the Throstle Nest you will not be disappointed we could not fault it in anyway.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that experienced cottage renters found Throstle Nest Barn so clean and well-appointed. Rosie and Andrew, owners, come regularly, and try to make sure something is improved or replaced on each visit, to keep the cottage right up to scratch.

Super location

  • 5 of 5

For us, it was a perfect holiday location on a quiet back road and yet not far from the village. Fairly central in the Dales for touring. Views just fantastic. Walks from the door in all directions. Accommodation was very well equipped, clean and comfortable. Great to have the wood burner and fuel provided. Much appreciated. I particularly liked the barn door from the upstairs bedroom where you could step out and watch the dark night sky. Only negative was the downstairs twin which was good for children but adults would find a little small. Booking service was efficient. We would definitely recommend to anyone who loves the countryside.

Owner's Response: Very glad the cottage had all that was needed for a good holiday. Twin bedroom is a little small, but hopefully fine for a holiday!

Lovely cosy, welcoming cottage

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully clean and well-appointed cottage that was perfect for our family of 4. It is very rural but only a few minutes' drive from several villages with nice food pubs, and from Reeth which has shops and an ice cream parlour. Sometimes self-catering cottages have only basic kitchen equipment, but that is not the case here - we had everything we needed to cook proper meals, and lots of thought had gone into making the cottage welcoming. The children were amazed to see the rabbits that scampered close to the cottage, and to watch the cows being led past the front windows on the way to milking. There are great walks and lots of places of interest to visit within 1/2 an hour's drive, and Swaledale is very pretty. We would definitely stay in this cottage again!

Location

From the Owner

To us it is the perfect place to relax away from our busy working lives, Throstle Nest Barn being high up on the fell side with glorious views of the river Swale flowing down dale gives it a peaceful location with only the birds and sheep for company most of the time. The silence can almost be deafening and is often only broken by the call of a curlew, the bleat of a lamb or the river flowing down stream. Although appearing remote it is only a mile to the village of Gunnerside or Low Row where delicious food can be obtained from very good pubs or tea rooms or just a couple of miles up dale will take you to a warm welcome at the Farmers Arms in Muker. If you're very lucky you may see the Northern Lights out of the kitchen window a lucky guest did last February.

Facilities

From the Owner

After arriving a car is no longer necessary, walk from the door, high onto the remoteness of the fell, through pretty villages or along the river passing through the glorious wild flower meadows. Take a walk through history up Gunnerside Gill viewing the relics of the lead mining industry. Bring your bicycles, there are miles of off road trails to explore or follow the route of 2014's Tour De France. A short walk would lead you to a wonderful days fishing on the Swale and if that isn't enough there are plenty of places to visit, Leyburn a lovely market town full of a wide range of independent shops, Hawes the home of Wensleydale cheese, the favourite of Wallace & Gromit, with plenty to tempt your tastebuds. Follow in the footsteps of James Herriot...... All Creatures Great and Small....
