About Anne Jolin

We have lived here for 30 years, and Rob has done all the building work himself. Nothing had been done to the house or the outbuildings for years, and it's been a labour of love to restore it. Originally a Market Garden, over the years the land was sold off, and when we came it only had an acre left. The house was built in 1703, and rumour has it that the original barn was burnt down during the Peasant's Revolt. The Roman road which led from Richborough (where the Romans first landed in Britain), runs directly in front of the house. The cottages are set in a pretty courtyard. We are on-site to give you as much (or as little!) help as you need to make sure your stay with us is memorable. We always welcome our guests personally, and will do all we can to make sure you enjoy your holiday.

Anne Jolin purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Anne Jolin chose Wingham

We always knew we wanted a house in the country, set back from the road with a big garden, but couldn't afford one! So we bought a wreck and Rob worked his magic and it turned from an ugly ducking into a swan!

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had originally looked at staying in the stables, but when we went to book, only the Gardners cottage was free. It was perfect for us. It has a lovely cosy feel, but with plenty of room. Very clean, every modern convenience and we loved getting to grips with the coffee machine and grinder! Just the thing to set us up for the day. Anne has the knack of thinking of everything you may need...even to the reading glasses in the draw! Would recommend and location for us was excellent to visit all the sites around. We look forward to a return."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Gardener's Cottage, even though it was only February. The cottage was lovely, very well equipped and immaculately clean, and well placed for visits to Canterbury and Sandwich. We found our hosts to be very friendly without being at all intrusive, and would certainly recommend the cottages for anyone wishing to spend time in this lovely part of Kent."

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Peter and Candace

"A beautiful cottage in a quiet location, perfect for exploring Kent. The cottage is furnished to a high standard with all mod-cons - nice comfy bed, A large shower and fully equiped kitchen. A welcome pack and fresh flowers are an added bonus. There is also a lovely garden. We had a enjoyable stay and would highly recommend this cottage."

Notes on accommodation: Because it is an old building, it has one step down into the kitchen and the bathroom. The bedroom has a sloping roof, so if you sleep on the left, you may have to duck! Outside: Part of a large garden of nearly an acre, you have a private terrace and views of the garden. We supply comfortable garden furniture, and parasol, for you to sit and relax. We have a host of visiting birds, including jays, both types of woodpecker and a beautiful mulberry tree just by the cottage. With stables beyond, and a wildlife park just down the road, you can hear horses, lions, monkeys etc! Utility Room: A larger freezer, ironing board and iron, tumble dryer and space for suitcases is provided in The Old Bakehouse opposite the cottage, along with spare toiletries, hot water bottles, picnic basket and rug. Back copies of Kent Life for your information. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are included. There are no hidden extras. We clean through and change linen and towels weekly.

Cosy little cottage

  • 5 of 5

I booked a week away at The Gardeners Cottage to celebrate and Anniversary with my boyfriend and we loved it. It was perfect for us, just far enough away from the centre to allow some afternoons just to relax and chill out but close enough to get into Canterbury with ease.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Sherie, for taking the time to give a review. Many guests prefer not being in the centre of Canterbury, and enjoy the peace of the garden. So pleased you enjoyed your stay, and hope to see you again.

Car: recommended

We are about 15 minutes drive away from the sea. The coastal towns of Deal, Dover, Folkestone, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Broadstairs and Thanet are all within half an hour from us. Dreamland in Margate is opening up again as a vintage theme park in June.

Gatwick Airport is about 1hour 20 minutes from us, with Heathrow and Standsted about 1 hour 45 minutes. We are 25 minutes from the port of Dover, and 40 minutes from Eurotunnel in Folkestone. We are on the main bus route from Canterbury to Sandwich and Deal, so you don't have to have a car to stay with us. We have had guests from Holland who cycled all the way, and backpackers from Australia!

We are 20 minutes from Canterbury by car/bus, so visiting the Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and all that Canterbury has to offer is very close. We have an organic farmshop 3 minutes walk away, with a village shop selling a wide range of items 5 minutes by car. Dover Castle is 20 minutes away. Leeds Castle about 45 minutes, and Sissinghurst and Scotney Castle about an hour away.

Further Details:

We have a wide range of good pubs within 10 minutes drive, serving very good food. We are well served with Sandwich being 5 minutes away in the car, which has banks, supermarkets, and a good supply of restaurants. Canterbury obviously has a much wider choice.
