Driftwood offers lovely accommodation in the unspoilt and little know area of outstanding natural beauty of the Hartland Peninsula on the North Devon Coast. It is the last barn on a private small group of barns. The South West Coastal path is only a field or so away and is accessed via the National Trust car park immediately next to the barns. This provides wonderful walking opportunities with spectacular views across open countryside and seascapes to Bideford Bay and Lundy. To the East the coastal path winds its way through gorgeous scenery, past Black Church Rock with its private secluded beach and onto the old fishing village of Clovelley with its amazing cobbled streets, picture perfect harbour, quaint cottages and famous donkeys and with the visitor's centre and tearooms is a must, especially with the Cream teas! To the West the coastal path heads through to the magnificent Hartland Point with its dramatic cliffs, it’s pretty white washed lighthouse deep down on the rocks below and sensational views of Lundy Island – Seriously Breathtaking! It is also where the Bristol Channel meets the Atlantic and the swells are amazing on a windy day. There is a kiosk here selling snacks, drinks and ice cream. Further on, the coastal path reaches dramatic Hartland Quay and beach and see if you can spot the rock formation that is like a statue of Queen Victoria! Onward the beautiful Spekes Mill Waterfall, with its water toppling down to the sea. Why not pop into the Hartland Quay hotel for a welcomed drink and some food after your coastal stroll, as it offers a wide selection of meals and snacks.

Just 2 miles to the south of Driftwood is the village of Hartland. It's only small, but has a village shop selling all that you need and provides cash back, a post office, 3 pubs, a café and various Artisan shops. On the first Sunday in the month there is a market selling local produce and gifts and well worth a mooch with breakfast available to purchase.

Further afield, approximately 20 minutes to the south by car, is the lovely sandy beach at Sandy Mouth Bay, with its rock pools and pebbles which children love to paddle in. The beach is set in stunning countryside and with a National Trust Café, toilets and plenty of parking. Just a little further to the South, Bude is a delightful small seaside resort with huge sandy beaches , a great selection of shops and cafes and a fascinating canal and Sea Lock. Morwenstow boasts the Rectory tea room, (including gluten free cream teas and cakes) are just near by and well worth a visit.

Slightly further on into Cornwall, Tintagel with its castle ruins and famous pasties, so famous you can order them online! Boscastle with its dramatic cliffs and beautiful National Trust owned Harbour is delightfully situated at the head of the Valency Valley and offers wonderful walks, Out door clothes shops, cafes and teashops with locally made organic ice cream. Not forgetting its infamous history of the devastating flash flood. The visitors centre shows film of that dramatic day when the small stream that runs through the village became a torrent with devastating consequences, amazing to see and all repaired to date - unbelievable. Padstow is just an hour away, with its famous harbour and Rick Stein Seafood Restaurant, Deli, Café and famous Fish and Chip shop. Very pretty.

Bideford is only 20 minutes away and in season offers day trips to Lundy Island on the supply ship MV Oldenburg. The Island is well worth a visit to experience its unique habitat and very special flora and fauna. There is a small post office and shop selling the famous Lundy Stamps , a church , 3 lighthouses and the famous Marisco Tavern. If you are lucky you may spot a Puffin or Basking Shark in late summer!

Instow, just passed Bideford, is great for walking along its totally flat area of Estuary beach and can be accessed from the road, for those who don't like hills and steps. As an estuary beach it always has sand to stroll on where most beaches loose there's when the tide in is and it also has magnificent views of Appledore! A very popular restaurant, The Boathouse, has wonderful views across the water to Appledore and stunning sunset where the hills lit up at night! John's Deli in Instow has much to choose from with local meats, cheeses and cakes (gluten free too) plus wines, beers and general store.

Appledore, a quaint fishing village with narrow streets and galleries is lovely for a outing and of course with views over Instow. Bideford has the Atlantic shopping village for a rainy day with its M&S factory outlet for those bargains! plus many more including, clothes, shoes Cadbury's shop!

Barnstaple with its mixture of specialist and high street shops and Pannier Market is only 40 minutes away. Further on are the dramatic beaches at Braunton and the surf haven of Croyde and the beginnings of Exmoor National Park with its wild Exmoor ponies and natural beautiful scenery to be explored.

A very enjoyable six-week stay in a small but very comfortable converted barn.

  • 5 of 5

Driftwood is a gem. It is set in a scenic, tranquil, and picturesque part of North Devon. The barn is wel-equipped and tastefully designed with a nautical theme throughout. We appreciated the log fire, central heating, and unlimited hot water on cold nights, and we took full advantage of the table, chairs, and parasol outside. We would most definitely return here.
