Lovely time at "Old Chapel",Chittlehamholt,Devon

  • 5 of 5

Having seen the renovation work going on at "The Old Chapel" on a previous drive through charming Chittlehamholt village, we thought a stay there would be an eye-opener when it was complete and available for our Devon holiday. We were very impressed with the attention to detail and cleanliness of the property, it really did feel like a "home-away-from home". Sue and Roy were terrific hosts and very thoughtful in asking if they could do more to enhance the experience of our stay, firstly by ensuring we had a newspaper every morning, secondly that we had the basics (milk, condiments, etc.,) to settle in and thirdly very good recommendations for eating out and sight-seeing in the area. The peace and quiet of the area was a huge plus as well for us city-dwellers. Despite the apparent remoteness, there are excellent pubs short distances away, the countryside and coast are outstandingly beautiful. We also appreciated Sue checking with us each morning when delivering our newspaper to ensure all was okay and offering her advice on places we planned to visit.

We have already recommended this property to friends/relatives of ours and definitely plan to return. It was one of our most enjoyable breaks ever and we highly praise Sue and Roy for their efforts and hospitality.

Pros and Cons

  • 4 of 5

The Old Chapel is a lovely property, very spacious with virtually everything you need. Chittlehamholt is a lovely little village with just a community shop and a pub! Our stay started off well and it was a good base for exploring North Devon but our holiday was marred by Sue keep popping in through the back door unannounced. The outside photographs of the property really need to be updated as things have changed since they were taken and the third bedroom is very small and has no wardrobe space. At the end of the first week the B-B-Q that was out on the patio disappeared and we had no idea whether it had been stolen or not but a couple of days later we saw it outside their cottages - it would have been nice to have been told it was being taken! At the beginning of the second week Sue came and told us that on the Thursday she was bringing some potential long let clients in to see the place and that they couldn't come at any other time. So even though we were still in residence strangers were coming to look into the rooms where our personal belongings were. They came and we actually heard one of the men say to Sue that they felt awful about coming in while we were still on holiday and that if she had told them they would have come at a date after we had left. This was totally unacceptable! Would we stay there again, no I don't think so!

Wow!

  • 5 of 5

First impressions of this lovely holiday cottage was how spacious the downstairs was for just 5 people. Much more space than any other cottage I have stayed in. On top of that it is beautifully decorated making it feel like so much more than just a holiday cottage. The fresh flowers were a lovely touch as well as the welcome tray of tea and biscuits and the toiletries in the bathrooms. The kitchen was well equipped and immaculately clean. The owners were very obliging and offered the use of their garage to store our bikes. All in all a beautiful home to escape to and relax in.

Fantastic house. The Old Chapel offers peace and serenity. Perfect place for a complete chill out.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was planned as a surprise for our 82 year old mother. Her youngest brother whom she hadn't seen for 10 years lives in Barnstaple. Unfortunately Mum took ill and had to be hospitalised in North Devon General Hospital. She was there for three days. During that time Sue and Roy, owners of The Old Chapel, we're so kind, checking each day how Mum was.

As to the Old Chapel itself, a beautiful place to stay with all that is needed to make your stay comfortable.

The Exeter Inn across the road served excellent food if you didn't feel like cooking.

Extremely Impressed

  • 5 of 5

Sue greeted myself and my husband together with two of our close friends, showed us over the Chappel, it's was exceptionally clean and very well cared for. Milk, tea and coffee plus some Cadbury's biscuits and as it was Easter some little Easter eggs. The bedrooms were wonderful, beds so comfortable and lovely duck down pillows, slept like a log. Kitchen was fully equipped, front room, very comfortable, plenty of reading material, games, and DVD's, Wifi as well. There was everything you could wish for and more. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone. Thank you Sue and Roy
