Fully equipped 18th Century Grade II Listed Cottage in village setting

Overview

Property

Updated: 05-Nov-2016
2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, open plan kitchen diner with log burner, sitting room.

Oast Cottage provides old world charm coupled with modern convenience. Set in the lovely village of Tilmanstone, Kent, Oast Cottage is located in the heart of the countryside near the historic port of Sandwich and only 5 miles from the sea at Deal. You will find Oast Cottage a comfortable and cosy retreat for up to 4 people.

In the Summer you can enjoy outdoor living in the walled rear courtyard or under the shady tree in the garden. In the colder months you can enjoy the warmth of its log burning stoves and the luxury of Egyptian Cotton sheets on the beds (we absolutely hate any man-made nonsense - a good night's sleep is essential).

The cottage was completely modernised during 2015 and provides clean and up to date accommodation in two bedrooms upstairs(1 double and 1 twin room), a snug sitting room, a new and fully-equipped kitchen connected to a further sitting and dining area downstairs as well as a brand new bathroom with shower. The cottage has gas central heating and WiFi.

About the Owner

We are the Blair Family and live in the nearby village of Northbourne. Joanna is a Dietitian with a background in corporate catering (she is a cordon blue qualified chef). Husband Philip, following a career in Agriculture and allied industry is Head of Biology at a local Grammar School. We have three children, a border terrier called Teasel and a cat called Humphrey. Neither of us originate from Kent but we have now been here longer than either of us has been anywhere else. We would love to welcome you to our cottage.

Great Cottage, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully presented, and extremely well equipped cottage, in a quiet but well located village. Owners were very friendly and helpful. Weather was hot and sunny so we spent a lot of time outside walking and visiting coastal locations such as Deal, Sandwich, White Cliffs near Dover and Broadstairs with its lovely beaches and bays. The cottage, I'm sure, would be very cosy in cooler weather as well with its two wood-burning stoves and efficient central heating. All in all, well recommended both for couples and families.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write. We really appreciate your thoughtful and helpful comments. Yes, those beaches round from Broadstairs to Margate are lovely sandy spaces and we recommend them, especially Joss Bay and Botany Bay. We hope to see you again sometime. Best wishes Philip and Joanna.

a delightful cottage to explore Kent from

  • 4 of 5

A well equipped, comfortable cottage. Set in the small hamlet of Tilmanstone, it is the ideal base to explore this very pretty area of England. The cottage was all that we needed and the home baked lemon cake awaiting us on arrival was tasty. We wouldn't hesitate to re-book here if visiting the area again. So much to see and do.

Clean, well-equipped, comfortable and welcoming

  • 5 of 5

We found the cottage very thoughtfully equipped and were particularly impressed by the care in providing plenty of lighting (we have stayed in one or two gloomy places in our time) and sockets to charge laptops, phones and so on. There was also very well-presented local information about amenities with the addresses and post codes of the nearest supermarkets of all the big chains as well as all the local services. We used the information on way-marked walks and enjoyed the local recommended walk on the evening of our arrival. The flowers, cake, apple juice and milk provided a very welcoming atmosphere. There are many interesting and attractive spots in the area; Dover castle is a must, particularly for members of English Heritage and the walk from the White Cliffs Visitor Centre along the cliff top to the South Forelands Lighthouse (but bear in mind it is not open on Thursdays) or a bit further to St Margaret's Bay for lunch at the Coastguard is highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking so much of your time to write such a thoughtful review. It sounds as though you had a lovely time and we are very glad that you found both the information in the cottage (especially the details about local way-marked walks) and the facilities (lighting, sockets etc.) so neatly fitting your needs. We know very well how important these details are to make the absolute best of any stay. Thank you for mentioning the English Heritage link for Dover Castle, we completely agree, this castle is a "must". We would love to have you stay again any time. Please tell your friends! With best wishes, Philip & Joanna.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jan. It was great to have you and Hans and your little dog to stay. I am sure you must have enjoyed the local walks, the bluebells are still an ocean of blue at the time of writing (May 2016). We would love to see you again next time you visit East Kent. Best wishes, Philip and Joanna.

Idyllic Location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week in this gorgeous cottage. The location is idyllic, peaceful and perfect for lots of country walks, as well as being close to Canterbury and all the major seaside towns. The cottage itself has every modern convenience yet retains all of its traditional charm. We stayed for a week in February, the cottage was wonderfully cosy with the added benefit of log burners in both reception rooms. The owners, Joanna and Phillip, could not have been more welcoming. We would highly recommend.

Location

From the Owner

We bought this cottage for the simple reason that it was absolutely beautiful and we could see the potential to make a high qualiity holiday home by completely modernising it after 40 years of neglect. We love a good project and hope that you will love the result.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Gatwick at 80 Miles Nearest Barpub : The Plough and Harrow, Tilmastone at 500 Metres Nearest Ferry : Dover at 8 Miles Nearest Golf : Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club at 8 Miles Nearest Train : Sandwich at 5 Miles Nearest Motorway : A2 at 5 Miles Nearest Restaurant : The Plough and Harrow, Tilmastone at 500 Metres Nearest Beach : Deal at 6 Miles Car: necessary

Coming back after a relaxing walk through the local woods and farmland footpaths that surround the village of Tilmanstone where the grade 2 listed Oast Cottage is situated, you will be able to relax in front of one of the log burning stoves before setting off for an evening exploration of Sandwich, Deal, Canterbury or the surrounding area.

Dover Castle is nearby with its dramatic battlements and underground network of tunnels set just above the Ferry terminal which offers the possibility of day trips to France. Dover Western Heights boasts both beautiful views across the channel on clear days as well as the fascinating Napoleonic defences of the Drop Redoubt and Great Spiral Staircase. Staying with this historic theme the Tudor castles of Walmer and Deal, as well as the remains of Sandown Castle and the those of of the Roman fort of Richborough are all close at hand. The landing site of Charles Lindberg (below Dover Castle) and the Dover Patrol Memorial at St Margarets both offer interesting diversions. A cliff top walk from the Memorial along the white cliffs to Kingsdown is a great way to spend a couple of hours, with a terrific view on clear days.

The sandy beaches such as Joss Bay near Broadstairs and Botany Bay at Margate are within quite easy reach as are the stony beaches of Deal with its fishing boats and Walmer with its wide strand and RNLI station. Dover Harbour is surprisingly pleasant and Dover Water Sports run sailing courses as well as canoe and wind surfer hire.

For golf enthusiasts we are close to several fine links golf courses including the Royal St Georges at Sandwich, The Princes Golf Club and the Golf course of the Royal Cinque Ports The Cathedral city of Canterbury is 20 minutes away by car.

For foodies there is a very wide range of restaurants on offer in Sandwich, Deal and Canterbury from the traditional English offer you will find in may pubs or fish and chip shops through to Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Turkish and on.

East Kent is a hidden gem. Beautiful rolling countryside; a world renowned coast line thanks to the White Cliffs (but you may also be amazed by some of the beaches - in a good way that is) and a raft of historical towns and villages. We would love to welcome you to our corner of England.

Facilities

From the Owner

We just think this is a terrific spot, rural whilst still being significantly close to the sea (Dover with its port and access to the continent (10 minutes), St Margaret's Bay (home of several notable people and set-off point for cross channel swimming), Walmer (Julius Ceasar landed near here) Deal (with its quaint streets and pier), Sandwich ("best preserved Georgian town in England"), Broadstairs, Margate) and to Canterbury. The walk s around and about are lovely and we are sure you will be able to find everything you need for a relaxing break locally. Local towns and villages offer a wide range of excellent food; there's lots of history locally from the fictional (James Bond - Ian Fleming lived locally) to the more tangible: all those tutor castles (and earlier Roman structures). There are zoos (Howletts and Port Lympne) as well as the White Cliffs of Dover. A lot by any standard.
