Overview

About the property

Cottage in Culbone, Nr. Porlock. Sleeps 4, peaceful location, steeped in history in glorious hillside.

Parsonage Farm Stables is almost 1000 years old, the hayloft of a farm that has been occupied since the time of the Domesday Book. It's ideal for walkers and dog lovers, offering easy access to all the splendours of Exmoor. Red deer often visit the garden, much to the owner's dismay, and the gentle cluck of our tame chickens creates a relaxing atmosphere throughout the year. Stunning in Summer, with beautiful gardens, and reassuringly cosy in Winter. Sometimes you're above the clouds, and the feeling is rather special. It's not surprising that Coleridge wrote Kubla Khan in this little valley; you can sense the history today.

About Jeremy & Paivi Payne

Jeremy's family have been in the house since 1949! Today, Jeremy & Paivi Payne have been refining their holiday properties for several years, and are still trying to improve every week and year! After many good years with Cottages 4 You and Welcome Holidays, we're finally in a position to run and man the house for ourselves!

Jeremy is a former advertising copywriter and Paivi is a teacher. They have travelled extensively and worked for many years in Hong Kong. They are accompanied most of the time by the noisy Wooster, a miniature Schnauzer, and their troupe of chickens. Whatever you need to know about walks, restaurants and other local stuff, if we're around we're always happy to tell you! Oh, and you can order freshly baked bread and home made marmalade for breakfast from us, too!

Jeremy & Paivi Payne purchased this cottage in 1949

Why Jeremy & Paivi Payne chose Porlock

It may be remote for some, but we absolutely love living up and away on the hill, far from the madding crowd. It can be wild in Winter, but that's part of it's charm, coming home to a warm supper and a cosy fire. In Summer, Exmoor can be almost breathtakingly beautiful - it's surely British tourism's best kept secret. Maybe it's time you discovered it for yourself!

What makes this cottage unique

For lovers of great walking, dark skies and beautiful countryside, there can be few places like it! It really is unique, a moorland gem - yet it's not too far from great restaurants, tourist attractions and shopping.

Beautiful old property. Amazing views and amazing weather.

Very warm welcome from Jeremy. The property is remote so you must be prepared for the narrow lane. Exmoor is a great place for walking and you can get an excellent cream tea at Selworthy and Watersmeet.

Peaceful, beautiful views, great hosts

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, historic property remotely located in some beautiful countryside. Despite the age it’s well equipped and very comfortable. The owners have obviously taken great care to ensure that guests have all they need. But they’re also on hand and very welcoming and helpful.

If there is one thing we’d change for our stay it would be the provision of a shower, although the bath was perfectly functional.

We stayed in November and the place was warm and cosy with the wood burner in the sitting room.

Highly recommended and we look forward to a return visit.

A wonderful few days in this magical place

  • 5 of 5

We took great care to choose a location which was remote, peaceful, with lots of walks, without the need for use of a car. We found it!

J & P made us feel so welcome. Little touches (of home-made bread and vase of flowers picked from the garden) were typical of their desire to make us feel at home.

Never felt more relaxed.

It was so peaceful and quiet.

Views from the secluded garden were breathtaking.

Proximity to the sea was a pleasant surprise and walks down to the coastal path were delightful.

The property was very clean, tidy and well equipped with everything we needed.
