About the property

Our enclosed garden borders fields with spring lambs and we're near Ash Barton

Dove Chapel is a brand new grade II listed chapel conversion overlooking the Taw estuary. We've brought the outside in with huge bifold doors in the lounge, and combined modern comforts and quirky design with the beauty of the original building.

Dove Chapel has sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms. We have the original oak beams upstairs (height at 6ft 2") and downstairs we've renovated the wooden floors and panelling of the original chapel. The Delabole slate aisle is now our hallway and we've kept the kitchen/dining/play area open plan to give you a flavour of the building's previous life.

For sunny days our garden and patio gives you lovely rural views and the lambs in the field next to us are wonderfully distracting (March to Sept). For rainy days we have wifi broadband and a table football table. There are also some DVDs and books to enjoy.

We have lots of toys and baby/toddler equipment for young families. We have a high chair, travel cot (no linen), stair gate, steriliser, bath insert for babies, plastic cups etc and lots of toys for babies and young children.

Dove Chapel is on the edge of the village of Ashford, and we're really handy for Saunton Sands, Marwood Hill Gardens, Braunton, Barnstaple and the Ash Barton wedding venue.

About Catherine Cull Thomas

I first starting holidaying in Devon in my teens, so when a chance to start my adventures in property development came up in 2007 in Ilfracombe, I didn't hesitate. Months of dusty living on a building site followed, and our first property, Seaholm (e2535), was the result. Unable to forget my adventures in property, the Retreat (e3718) followed in 2011, and Dove Chapel in 2015. I live in London with my family but whenever we're away from Devon, we're always plotting our next trip back. Seaholm gives us the amazing seascapes and acres of space we crave after London life. The Retreat surrounds us with hills and trees and a cosy, peaceful stay in front of the fire. Dove Chapel gives us a quirky, character house with amazing river and estuary views.

Why Catherine Cull Thomas chose North Devon

We first viewed the Chapel at sunset, and just couldn't believe how amazing the river and estuary views are, and how far they stretch. This slightly distracted us from the large hole in the roof and the doves nesting up there.

We then bought the Chapel at auction and set about transforming the abandoned building (complete with pews) into a lovely family home. There are lots of beautiful original features that we've kept, and it was also important to put those views at the heart of the home, with a new lounge extension.

What makes this cottage unique

I absolutely love watching the changing tides and birdlife from the comfort of the sofa. The view is so different at high and low tide, and all the stages inbetween. And then there's the lambs to coo over just beyond the garden fence.

I also really enjoy the kitchen space as it is a real mixture of the original chapel's best features and modern furnishings. It's such a light, bright room and we've retained and reused many original furnishings (benches as shelving, lecturn as a bookcase) whilst creating a modern family kitchen.

Excellent house with an outstanding location.

The house is lovely. It has excellent views and it is very tranquile. At the same time it is in a superb location, very closed to the best beaches and better known towns in the area. It is clear that the owners had very good taste as it is very nicely decorated and the owner provides you with all the essentials to really make you feel at home during your stay. Excellent place for great holidays in the area.

beautiful retreat

We loved this holiday home. It was only ten minutes from the beach and has beautiful views of the estuary. The property is very comfortable and has good quality fittings, quirky features and tasteful furnishings. The whole family enjoyed eating al fresco and using the barbecue. We would highly recommend and look forward to staying again.
