About this property

400 year old cottage near Wells, Cheddar and Glastonbury. Dog and child friendly

Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty at the foot of the Mendip hills, close to Wells and Cheddar is the ancient village of Westbury-sub-Mendip. Just a short walk from the village centre, is the Dairy, a 400 year old, stone cottage. In a peaceful location well away from noisy roads. Wonderful country walks all around and good village pub and shop just down the lane.

The Dairy is a two-bedroom, self-catering cottage, with a wealth of original features and thick stone walls. The cottage is in a sunny courtyard behind high stone walls with its own patio garden and is attached to the owners’ old farmhouse, yet is completely self-contained within 3ft thick stone walls.

The Dairy sleeps 3 plus a baby / toddler. It's a peaceful getaway for couples, families, walkers, cyclists and dog owners. All of our guests are warmly welcomed, we really want you to get the most from your stay with us and we are happy to advise you on places to visit, or discovering the hidden gems in this beautiful part of Somerset. The cottage makes the perfect home from home with everything you could need in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

A stable door opens into the sunny sitting room with comfortable sofa and chairs. There is a smartTV with internet channels and DVD player, as well as plenty of DVDs, books, toys and games. Wifi with good speed. Digital radio and CD player with USB port /MP3.

The kitchen has an extending dining table, which seats up to 6. There is a Zanussi fan oven, induction hob, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and plenty of good quality knives, cookware, utensils and crockery so that you can happily cook your own meals.

The spiral staircase, (has a built in upper stairgate) and leads up to a small landing, where there is a small desk and chair. The master bedroom has original 16th century vaulted ceiling beams and dual aspect windows with voile drapes and black out blinds. The king size bed is canopied with voiles and made up with good quality bedlinen. The single bedroom with more beams, has garden views, and has room for an additional cot. Both rooms have hanging and drawer space for guests clothes.

The shower room has a good quality electric shower, wash basin and toilet. There an additional wash basin in the master bedroom.

Outside is a large walled courtyard, with parking, shared with the owners. There is a small sun-trap patio garden, exclusively for guests, with a water feature and small lawn. A table and chairs are set under a lilac tree, with roses climbing the walls; it's a perfect place to sit and read. There is space to store guests’ bicycles and a portable BBQ is available.

From the cottage, there are many lovely country walks, including Lynchcombe nature reserve on the edge of the village, which leads up to the craggy Mendip tops and the pub in Priddy village. You'll see outstanding views of the area as far as the Somerset coast and Wales beyond. We provide maps and guides to inspire you for walks and trips. Dogs are welcome (with well-behaved owners). There are plenty of dog friendly pubs nearby, including our wonderful village pub.

Its a 10 minute drive to Wells or Cheddar, both offering interesting shops, restaurants and tourist attractions, such as Wells Cathedral, Bishops Palace, farmers market and the famous Cheddar gorge and caves.

Children are always welcome and we try to provide everything you need, such as cot, stair-gate, highchair, baby bath, step stool, night light and a changing mat, as well as plenty of toys so you can save space in your car.

Lovely cottage in a stunning location.
What a lovely cottage this is. It has everything you could want for a perfect stay. Fully equipped kitchen and I mean fully equipped - loads of pots, pans and utensils. We cooked every day. Everything was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The welcome tray was a lovely touch too. Local goodies and teas, coffee etc. much appreciated. The owners are really friendly and helpful too. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Cathy and Will own The Dairy. We have lived here since 2000 and raised our family. The house had an attached cottage, which had been a threshing barn and diary. After much building work the old dairy has been fully renovated into a comfortable holiday home.
Our family has now grown up but keep coming back! We have a small dog Otto and a couple of chickens to provide us with eggs and good company in the garden.
We are delighted to be able to share this beautiful place with our guests and have met so many lovely people.

Why they chose this property

Walking up the hill at the back and looking down at our home, we feel fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. We are surrounded by magnificent and varied countryside. From the craggy Mendip hill tops you can see the coasts of Wales and North Devon. Below us are the wild Somerset levels, wetlands full of birds and flat lanes perfect for easy cycling.

We are only minutes away from England's smallest cathedral city of Wells. Or the exciting and very different cities of Bristol and Bath, with all the culture you could wish for.
Parts of the house date back over 1000 years. So we are just the latest custodians to enjoy living in this special place, and are happy to share this with our guests

What makes this property unique

As we live next door, we are always happy to advise our guests on places to visit and help them get the best from their stay. However we are also careful not to intrude and let you enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

We have stayed in many holiday lets over the years and have incorporated the best ideas into The Dairy. We are always striving to ensure our cottage is the best it can be. It is well equipped and very comfortable. It is warm and cosy in winter and cool and comfortable in summer, so you can relax and enjoy your holiday.
