2 bed cottage in Westbury-sub-Mendip a village Nr. Wells, Somerset, England

At the foot of the Mendip hills, between Wells and Cheddar is the ancient village of Westbury-sub-Mendip. Just a short walk from the village centre, is the Dairy, a 400 year old, stone cottage, peacefully located away from noisy roads.

The Dairy is a charming, two-bedroom, self-catering cottage, with a wealth of original features and thick stone walls. The cottage is set within a sunny courtyard behind high stone walls and is attached to the owners’ old farmhouse, yet is completely self-contained. The village has a thriving community shop and welcoming pub.

The Dairy offers a peaceful retreat for couples, families, walkers, cyclists and dog owners; all of our guests are warmly welcomed! We really want you to get the most from your stay with us and we are happy to advise you on places to visit, or discovering the hidden gems in this beautiful part of Somerset. The cottage makes the perfect home from home with everything you could need in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

A stable door opens into the sunny sitting room with comfortable seating. There is a TV with Freeview and DVD player, as well as plenty of DVDs, books and games. Wifi is provided.

The kitchen has a good sized dining table, which seats up to 6. There is an electric oven, washing machine, microwave and plenty of good cookware, utensils and crockery so that you can happily cook your own meals if you wish.

Follow the winding spiral staircase, with built in stairgate, upstairs to the 2 comfortable bedrooms. The first, a roomy master bedroom with the original 16th century vaulted ceiling beams. The double bed is romantically canopied with white muslin drapes and made up with fresh white cotton bedding. The single bedroom overlooks the sunny garden, and has room for an additional bed or cot.

The shower room has a good sized electric shower, wash basin and toilet. There is a separate wash basin in the master bedroom.

Outside is a large walled courtyard with parking shared with the owners. There is a small sun-trap patio garden, exclusively for guests, with a water feature and small lawn. A table and chairs are set under a lilac tree, with roses and other plants climbing the walls; a perfect place to sit and read. There is space in our barn to store guests’ bicycles if needed and a portable BBQ is available.

From the cottage, there are many lovely country walks, including to Lynchcombe nature reserve on the edge of the village, which leads up to the craggy Mendip tops and has outstanding views of the area. We can provide maps and guides to inspire you for walks and trips. Dogs are welcome with their well-behaved owners. There are plenty of dog friendly pubs nearby including the one in the village.

Children are always welcome and we try to provide everything you need, such as cot, stairgate, highchair, baby bath, step stool and a changing mat, as well as plenty of toys so you can save space in your car.

About Mrs Cathy Hancock

Will and I are both country people who met in Bristol in 1982. We both had quite stressful jobs and always dreamed of buying an old farmhouse in the countryside, in a peaceful, beautiful place, where we could have chickens, dogs and children. Luckily for us, we were finally able to make this dream a reality, when we bough a former farmhouse in a beautiful Somerset village. The house had an attached cottage, which was the old farm diary, and has been fully renovated to a very comfortable holiday home.

We are delighted to be able to share this beautiful place with our holiday guests and have met many lovely people since we started renting the cottage in 2003.

We bought Cottage Farm and the adjoining Dairy cottage in 2000 as it was the perfect place to raise our family. (now grown up) It was my dream house, an old farm house set within high stone walls, with a huge Magnolia tree in the garden.

Walking up the hill at the back and looking down on the house and cottage, we feel so fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. We are surrounded by magnificent and varied countryside. From the craggy hill tops you can see the coasts of Wales and North Devon.

Yet we are only minutes away from England's smallest city of Wells. Or the exciting and very different cities of Bristol and Bath, with all the culture you could wish for.

Parts of the house date back 1000 years. So we are just the latest custodians to enjoy living in this special place, and are happy to share this with our guests

What makes this cottage unique

As we live next door, we are always happy to advise our guests on places to visit and help them get the best from their stay. However we are also careful not to intrude.

We have stayed in many holiday lets over the years and have incorporated the best ideas into The Dairy. We are always striving to ensure our cottage is the best.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: 1 or 2 dogs welcome. Babies and children welcome. We provide cot, highchair, blender, baby bath, stair gates, changing mat etc as well as lots of toys. With thick stone walls and wooden double glazed windows, the cottage is cool in summer and cosily warm in winter. Gas central heating. Open all year. Short breaks and longer lets sometimes available. No smoking inside but guests are welcome to smoke outside. Outside: Sunny, walled courtyard, with parking for 1 vehicle. Pretty guest's garden area is a suntrap, with small fishpond, lawn trees and flowers. Garden table and chairs. Barbecue available. Please note, the garden is not fully enclosed as there is no gate. Utility Room: Utility equipment includes iron and board, vacuum cleaner, and all cleaning products and equipment. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage is thoroughly cleaned before the arrival of all our guests. Bed linens and towels provided, (except beach towels). Changed weekly as needed.
