Duras is a five minute drive away where you will find a medieval châteaux, tourist information, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Within a half hour drive there are many more towns and attractions to explore. The area is steeped in history, wine-making and traditional French cultural life.
When you want to relax the pool area offers shade, sun loungers, and patio furniture. A BBQ and fire pit, with additional seating area, complete the poolside amenities.
A spacious and well maintained garden offers plenty of space for children to play safely and a separate patio area leads directly from the kitchen with outdoor dining furniture for al fresco meals. Inside the farmhouse has a spacious, airy feel that will generously accommodate your group.
This makes Les Merleaux ideal for a large family or two families sharing. The heart of any home is its kitchen and Les Merleaux is no different. The original fireplace, with solid fuel stove gives a backdrop to the dining area which is part of the well-equipped kitchen. A breakfast bar provides additional seating and makes food preparation a sociable activity. The large lounge area has comfy sofas and a flat screen TV, with UK channels, and leads to another dining area seating 8.
A playroom with additional sofa provides another living area so that guests have plenty of space to relax.
Three en suite double bedrooms downstairs (the master bedroom has patio doors directly to the pool area) all have their own charm, whilst upstairs two bedrooms share a large family bathroom. There is also an additional sofa bed, and rollaways available which would be perfect for children in addition to the 11 bed spaces.
The front of the house offers beautiful views of the French countryside whilst the back overlooks the large private garden. There is ample private parking for four cars. A car is essential for your stay in this peaceful, rural location that is well placed for exploring the Aquitaine region
About the Owner
We are a large family who now live in the Middle East. We rented this property out for 3 years running and completely fell in love with the house and local area. We were lucky enough that the previous owners agreed to sell us the house. We try and visit when we can, it is our second home and hope that visitors will feel the same way. Lots of our friends and family have visited and loved the property and surrounding areas, it is very much a relaxing family home.

We stayed here for a week in July 2014 and the only reason I didn't write a review earlier was because the new owners hadn't started to advertise it at that point, so it wasn't featured on TA then. We approached them directly through a mutual friend so I think we were their first paying guests! We returned to Duras very recently to look for a house of our own to buy. When hunting for a few nights' B&B on TA I stumbled across Les Merleaux again, so I decided to leave a long overdue review. This is a stunning old stone farmhouse. It is huge and full of French character with beautiful old windows and shutters and lovely weathered terracotta floors. If, like me, you are a big fan of old, rustic French houses you will get your fix from this one. The kitchen is lovely to work in, nice and spacious and it opens onto a terrace that gets some shade at various times of the day so it's perfect for eating outside when it's very hot. There are also two other terraced areas at the rear of the house by the pool so you can eat wherever you fancy depending on the time of day and where the sun is. The pool is a really good size, very private and sheltered but gets plenty of sun. There is plenty of space in the garden for children to play safely, but not so much land that you will lose them - they will still hear you call for dinner! The surrounding countryside is very pretty and gently hilly, so great for long (but not too exhausting) walks where you might get to see some wildlife, especially birds of prey. The area is full of vineyards, plum orchards and fields of sunflowers. It's a short drive into Duras which is a small but quite lively Bastide town with lots of laid-back atmosphere coming from a handful of restaurants, bars and cafes on summer evenings, and a nice little market. There is a surprisingly good and well-stocked little supermarket maybe two or three kilometres down the road from the house, and a huge E LeClerc hypermarket a bit further away towards Sainte Foy Le Grande. The area is peaceful and quiet but well placed for day trips further into the Dordogne, or to Bergerac, St. Emilion and Bordeaux. We won't be returning, but only because we liked it so much we just bought a house nearby!

Activity and Interests
20minutes drive to Bergarac airport. 80mins easy drive to Bordeaux airport/train station. Use of a car would be essential at this property.
5mins drive to closest supermarket. 7mins drive to the town of Duras. 15mins drive to the beautiful town of Sainte Foy Le Grande.
This area is surrounded by vineyards and you can visit the local wine producers and receive a very warm welcome. There are lots of farmers markets held in the local towns all year round. During the summer you can find the evening markets a very lively affair, with local cooking on offer and live music and dancing. It is a fabulous area if you enjoy walking/cycling. You can also visit the lake beach at Castlejaloux in 45 minutes or visit the historic town of Marmande with its fabulous park in 20minutes.
