Excellent property in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Very well equipped cottage in a stunning location with beautful views. Plenty of room with all single beds on request. Wash basins in all rooms except en-suite which is a real boon cutting down on time spent waiting for the bathroom when teeth cleaning etc. We were a party of 8 ladies of a certain age and would thoroughly recommend this property for larger parties as it has plenty of room to accomodate all. Very well equipped property and the games room is a fun facility. Walks can be started directly from the door or just a short car ride away. We had a good meal at the nearby 'Ye Old Ferrie Inn'. We would definitely consider a return to this property as the standard is very good and there is such a lot to do and see in the surrounding area.

Great cottage

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It is much roomier than it looks from the outside. The master bedroom is very spacious, Our dogs appreciated the games room and the smaller one even had a bath bin the sink there. There were lots of beautiful places near to the cottage especially as we went in the autumn when the tree colours were lovely.

Cottage was cosy but spacious, ideal spot for accessing all that symmonds yat has to offer

  • 5 of 5

My family and I really enjoyed our experience in Ganarew cottage, when we arrived there were the bare essentials to get you settled in eg bread, milk, tea, coffee, sugar and jam plus a lovely home made sponge. From the outside the cottage looked small and quaint but was very deceiving when you stepped indoors, it was surprisingly large with ample room for everyone, we could have all fitted in the master bedroom. The cottage was beautiful and clean, the linen was superb, beds really comfortable, the games room was set more for children but the adults enjoyed joining in. There are plenty of walks, there is a butterfly farm nearby and a very short drive away is facilities for kayaking, walking, climbing, all outdoor pursuits. Also ideal for dogs.

We enjoyed si much we are thinking of returning to Ganarew cottage next year

Just perfect!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing place! We booked here to celebrate my birthday, 8 of us in total, and I think we all immediately fell in love with this cottage.

Spacious, comfortable and just a delight, I wish I lived here.

Beautiful places to visit in the area and fab places to eat and drink, especially The Hostelrie in Goodrich.

We will definitely be back!

Excellent, spacious, comfortable property.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed with my father. Very well appointed and situated (for Wye Valley and Forest of Dean especially). Monmouth is very near and is an interesting, historical town with much feeling of community. Would like to go back again. Would be an excellent property for young families. Vey cosy and welcoming.

About Katie

I live in Herefordshire with my husband, 2 dogs and various other animals in our small holding.

Katie purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Katie chose Forest of Dean District

The Cottage was bought in 2014 at auction in a poor state. It desperately needed some love and attention. We spent 9 months working with structural engineers, planning consultants and builders to restore the cottage to what you find today. It truly was a labour of love.

It became clear very early on that this would be a great holiday let. The village is very safe for children to play in and is connected to a vast array of footpaths. Also, for the size of the cottage it is incredibly spacious.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is just two miles from Monmouth and 10 minutes walk away from the famous Wye Valley, thus ideally located for walking.

My favourite part of this property and the location is the church opposite and the walk up the hill behind, where from the top you can look into both Wales and England.

Garnarew is a small hamlet located only 1 mile from the Welsh border, just off A40 between Monmouth and Ross on Wye.

It is easy to access, 2 hours drive from M25 and 50 minutes from M42/M5 Junction.

Please note the SatNav will take you to the wrong part of Ganarew. You need to go into the hamlet of Ganarew itself. The Cottage can be found next to the Care Home, and opposite the church.

2 miles from Monmouth, 8 miles from Ross on Wye and 1 mile from Whitchurch

Local shop

Less than 2 miles away is Whitchurch where you will find ‘Woods of Whitchurch’. Woods is a fantastic local shop selling many groceries including fresh bread, pastries and wine. They often offer take aways, including Pizza on a Friday and Saturday night. If you’d like to check in advance if they stock an item you’re looking for,

National Supermarkets

Monmouth has major supermarkets including:

- Waitrose

- Marks & Spencer

- Lidl

- Co-operative

Waitrose will deliver to Ganarew. We are happy to take receipt of an order for you between 12noon and 2pm on your arrival day, but please do give us advance notice.

- The Gulf Petrol station off the A40, between Whitchurch and Ganaarew

- Cashback also available at Woods of Whitchurch

Hereford is the most local A&E

Monmouth has a boots and superdrug on the main Monnow Street

Pubs / Restaurtant

- Ye Old Ferrie Inn

A charming local pub with stunning views across the valley and honest food. There are lots of outdoor tables on the riverside terrace and a roaring log fire inside.

- The Old Court, Whitchurch

With an historic Tudor Dining Room restaurant, a more informal bar and conservatory and a very large garden, the Old Court provides for everyone

- Saracens Head, Symonds Yat

A great pub to enjoy a sandwich or a pint during your walk along the Wye. Note it can get quite busy during the summer

- The Ostrich Inn, Newland

A free house renowned for its excellent food with one of the best restaurants in the area, catering for a wide variety of tastes, including vegetarians.

- The Bell, Skenfrith

A smarter eatery, on the River Monnow and opposite the castle. Great food and wine.

- Lough Pool, Sellack

A very good pub with lovely food, just north of Ross on Wye. We recently went her
