About the property

House near Angouleme, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France - 3 Bedroom House Sleeps 6. Between ancient Angouleme and the wild West Coast. Ideal for exploring

A centre for everywhere in the middle of nowhere!

Hidden between the mill stream and the forest, Chez Meunier offers complete privacy and peace. While you enjoy the sun-trap private pool you will hear nothing but the birds in the surrounding woods . Also brilliant for star-gazing after a hard day doing nothing! The Charente skies are some of the least light polluted in the world.

The local countryside presents a mosaic of colour, with sunflowers, maize and wheat and the occasional family group of cattle grazing happily in the fields. But the area is best known for its vineyards, supplying grapes for Cognac and our local delicacy Pineau.

The house: The low, unassuming façade belies the huge amount of space contained within. The entrance, beside the 10 x 5 metre pool, leads into a large bright hallway and the ground floor. Overlooking the pool is the bright, airy and fully equipped kitchen/diner. The giant oak table will seat 10 with room to spare and the kitchen has all the appliances and utensils you will want. Across the hall is the sitting room which again looks out onto the pool and beyond into the woods. With duel aspect windows this room is delightfully bright and restful, being comfortably furnished with armchairs and settees, TV and DVD and a supply of books and games. At the end of the hall is a toilet with hand basin. Beside this cloakroom is a large area for any outdoor wear, boots and coats, ideal for hikers and explorers!

The wrought iron staircase leads up to a large hall and into the stunning Master Bedroom, which has a super king-size sleigh bed under a beautiful vaulted ceiling showing all the ancient oak beams. There is a full-sized wardrobe and large chest of drawers, plenty of space to store all your bits and pieces. The large en-suite wet room is fully tiled and fitted with a skylight to let in the sunshine. This bedroom has views to the east across the mill stream, Le Ne, and the rising sun.

Double bedroom and Twin bedroom: On this floor there are a further two bedrooms, a double and a twin. Both have ample storage and idyllic views over the forest. These 2 rooms are directly opposite the large family bathroom featuring a bath as well as shower for those folk who enjoy a soak!. Both the bathrooms are newly fitted with the best quality and style. Fully tiled with beautiful vanity units to contain all your bathing paraphernalia. All towels are supplied and renewed each week.

Outside, the 10 x 5 metre pool is surrounded by a European Standard Security barrier which has child-proof locks. The outside dining area has large table on the paved patio under a canopy and is next to the stone barbecue. The view from here is just the fields and forest. Next to the pool area and patio, the small gravelled garden has figs and walnuts aplenty in season and also the pigeonnier is here, which houses all the bikes for your use.

The Charente region has many attractive towns and villages and a sightseeing holiday could include: Cognac and a visit to one of its world famous Brandy Houses – watch the process and sample the product! Angouleme, with its beautiful Cathedral in the heart of the Old City, where a wander through the maze of narrow streets offers a delightful range of pavement bars and gourmet restaurants to suit everyone. Angouleme is also the capital of the cartoon industry and a visit to the paper making museum on the banks of the beautiful Charente is a must. The famous and fascinating Chapelle des Templiers at Cressac – just a healthy bike ride away from the house. Soak up the aura of its frescoes before pedaling on to Blanzac for a coffee. Jarnac, which straddles the lovely Charente. Here you can enjoy a boat trip on the river. For the more adventurous: Golf enthusiasts can play the championship course at Cognac, beautifully designed around a Chateau and its vineyard. There is also an 18 hole course in Angouleme and a pleasant 9 hole course at nearby Pillac. The Charente river offers numerous opportunities to hire canoes and kayaks, for an hour or for a day. Aubeterre sur Dronne, with its underground cathedral and voted one of the most beautiful villages in France, has a range of options and is 25 minutes away. For the ramblers and cyclists, the quiet lanes and rolling hills provide a perfect setting. There are waymarked paths and bridleways, or you can explore the valleys of the Ne and the Boeme yourselves with local maps. Other activities and experiences: In Angouleme, the annual Cartoon Strip Festival ( Bande Desinee ) in February and the Rampart Rally ( vintage cars from all over Europe racing round the City streets ) in September. In Cognac, the annual Blues and Jazz Festival in early July attracts internationally renowned artists every year. In Barbezieux, the Music Week early July, where local and regional musicians play a variety of styles in the bars and around the streets. There are also organised live concerts and exhibitions throughout the summer. Throughout the region, almost every village offers weekly markets, fares and occasional exhibitions. In the summer, the “Farmers Markets” are a fantastic way to sample local produce in the villages, where you usually have the chance to buy the meat, cook it there and then on the BBQ and wash it down with some local wine!

About Stephanie Hope

Harry and I moved to the delightful Charente in 2007 from our home of 25 years near Epping Forest. We have spent the time renovating our mill house and the adjoining miller's house, now our rental property. The work has been challenging to say the least, partly because of the age of the buildings and their historical importance. I am a designer and H a builder, so knowing what to do was never the problem. Just getting it done!

But we are finished now and very content with the results. As are our guests, which gives us a huge sense of satisfaction.

Stephanie Hope purchased this house in 2007

Why Stephanie Hope chose Charente

The Mill took our hearts as soon as we saw it. And although we went on to view a dozen or so others all around SW France this one was always beckoning. I think it was the situation, hidden in the woods but with such a sunny atmosphere that captivated us. And the structure itself was perfect for our needs.

What makes this house unique

I have always loved photography and wildlife. So to live amongst the assortment of beautiful wildflowers and see the deer and occasional red squirrel is a real treat. It is so very peaceful even the birdsong sounds loud.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Chez Meunier, lovely!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely welcome from Steve and Harry at this most charming and superbly kept and furnished gite within peaceful surroundings but close to historic sites and much more. Great having a swimming pool in the garden. It has been a pleasure to recommend Chez Meunier to family and friends.

Absoute bliss... again!

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay in this beautiful house in an idyllic setting - perfect weather for pool days and quiet evenings outside, we had a blissful week. The house is stocked with everything you need, and Steve and Harry are the perfect hosts - as friendly as you want them to be, full of information about the local area and happy to share a bottle of wine if you fancy it! We had a day trip to Aubeterre sur dronne which is a beautiful town and well worth a look, other than that it was a daily trip out for chocolatines, croissants and bread (all available within a five minute drive) and hours and hours spent playing in the pool. If you want some peace, relaxation and family time away from the rest of the world this is the holiday for you.

A Beautiful House For Rest and Relaxation

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Chez Munier for 2 weeks in July/Aug 2016. Steve and Harry are so welcoming and strike the perfect balance of being on hand when you need them but leaving you to your own devices to enjoy your holiday. The house and pool are fantastic and as other reviews mention make sure to read 'that book' to see the hard work that has gone in to creating this beautiful hideaway. Our kids (8 and 5) had many happy hours enjoying the wonderfully maintained pool.

The nearest supermarket/village is Blanzac which is a 10 minute drive from the property or for a slightly wider choice Barbezieux is a 20 minute drive away.

Overall if your looking for secluded beauty you couldn't go far wrong than to head to Chez Munier!

The weather did not give the gite a chance

  • 4 of 5

This was our 4th June week in the Dordogne area in 5 years, and unlike the others we did not enjoy wall to wall sunshine, Just the opposite.

The Gite has a lovely large & clean pool, but unfortunately it was not warm enough for us to enjoy it. There was a good selection of bikes and we ventured out the first day - but we got wet when it rained and did not want to get wet again. We used the outdoor table tennis twice, but each time our games were rained off. We cooked on the charcoal BBQ 3 times, but never dined outside the whole week due to the weather. This all makes it sound terrible, The gite is wonderfully appointed. Stevie & Harry have spent many long hours making this into a wonderful gite with well stocked kitchen, good TV reception, everything worked, comfortable furniture etc. We were disappointed there were no views from the villa, due to the wood. Stevie & Harry who live in the back of the villa were friendly without being overbearing. Their communications during the booking process were outstanding. With better weather we are sure we would have enjoyed it much more.

We found the Charente area to be less of a tourist area and preferred the Dordogne, but guess it is down to taste.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a comprehensive Review. I will try here to respond in equal depth. I am sad that the weather was so unkind to you and for what is listed as 2nd sunniest area in France, it really did not perform this Spring. It is truly unusual, a couple who have booked 4 consecutive May fortnights since 2012 have never had weather like you experienced, it really was extraordinary. Thankfully, I'm not responsible for the rain. The house is a different matter, that is solely our responsibility and I am very pleased that you found it suitable. We do try hard to meet all the needs of our guests, while at the same time, keeping a discreet distance. As I said when you arrived (as I do to every new visitor) 'you will not see us, but ring the big bell or email me, if you need help or advice'. As you did when you needed the saddles raised on the bikes. Sometimes it helps guests if I book a restaurant for example, on one occasion I made an appointment for the doctor. It is our pleasure to give help, but only when it is sought. The lack of distant views is well documented in our adverts as all the descriptions speak of 'hidden in woodland' etc, but I can appreciate it is not to everyone's taste. It really is a sunny (usually) spot in the middle of the woods. It is a very hilly area and the views from the top of our own lane, are wonderful if you walk a few hundred yards. But as you say, who wants to tramp across fields in the pouring rain! The Dordogne, where you have enjoyed previous holidays, is indeed a more 'touristy' place. It is much more popular with Expats than La Charente and the street markets, bars etc probably do reflect that. The Charente is the rural heartbeat of France with its sunflowers, maize and vineyards and is a much quieter place. There are, of course, many and various places to enjoy, The 'Freemusic' weekend in June, The 'Cognac Blues' Music festival in July, 'Les Circuit des Remparts' Classic Car Race in September apart from the rivers for canoeing, the inland beaches for swimming and small market towns with local produce and crafts. But it is still, very much 'Rural France' and is glorious for just that reason. So, all in all The Charente does have a great deal to offer and normally it will offer it all with a great big sunny smile. But not this Spring and Harry and I are truly sorry you were disappointed.

Chez Meunier

  • 5 of 5

The Gite has been developed to an exceptionally high standard. Everything we needed was there. The property was spotless and furnished to a high standard. We ate outside most of the time at the high quality external table. Our stay was peaceful and comfortable. The pool was a pleasure to use.

Our hosts Stevie and Harry were in the adjacent property and they gave us a warm welcome and ensured we wanted for nothing. The Supermarket at a nearby town had everything we could possibly need. All in all a GREAT holiday! Will seriously consider a return visit.
