Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Jun-2016
Chateau / Manor House in Nerigean, Libourne, Aquitaine / Dordogne, France - Historic Chateaux In The Wood And The Vineyard Lovingly Restored In Its Own Vast Groun

The origins of the chateaux dates back to the 14th century when the Aquitaine region was ruled by kings of England. In the 18th century the king of France authorised the construction of the noble house of Vieux Fourens. In the past 25 years the chateaux has been lovingly and authentically restored by its present owners Philippe and Marie George. There are two further outbuildings and a chapel on the grounds of the chateaux. The chapel dates back to the 16th century. It has a crypt and a fountain and if interested the owners would be pleased to tell you the history behind it. Located in the vineyards of Bordeaux you take the long and charming drive through the woods of its own to reach the chateaux in its well kept grounds. The world famous St Emilion and the classy Bordeaux are both UNESCO protected and celebrated for their architecture and their wine. They are waiting to be explored! You will have the choice of discovering the countryside and the local wildlife either on foot or by bike on designated cycle paths along the river Dordogne or through the vineyards. It is for certain that you will be encountering local wildlife such as deer, pheasants, squirrels around the protected and natural reserve of the chateaux before returning and dipping your toes and relaxing by the delightful 12 X 6m pool. This year we add a tree house in the middle of the wood for you to rent to be closer ti wildlife. There is also tennis, golfing, horse riding in the vicinity for the more energetic guests.

Fantastic summer retreat

  • 5 of 5

We (family of four, two girls, six and nine) had a wonderful two weeks at Grand Bois this summer. The house, grounds and gite have been restored with so much love and attention to detail that it feels like a true privilege to stay there. And the pool was the icing on the cake! Philippe and Marie George are charming and helpful and the area has lots to offer in terms of days out. We didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back!

Wonderful stay for our family

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five (3 sons ages 10-15) loved our stay. Our hosts were very kind and friendly and have done an incredible job of restoring this historic property. The grounds and gardens were beautiful, with roses blooming in our garden. Our apartment was perfect for us, compact but very nicely decorated with a beautiful terrace for meals overlooking the gardens and fields around. The kids loved the pool and the chickens, geese and other pets on the property. It is a great quiet central location for exploring St Emilion, Bordeaux and biking nearby. We also enjoyed the Dune de Pyla in Arcachon.

Thanks again for a wonderful week!

Superb setting and very welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time here and even extended our stay to enjoy more time by the pool. The cottage is spacious and very comfortable, the views were stunning and gardens beautifully maintained. Our hosts, Phillips and Marie-George were so welcoming and really made us feel at home. They were available if we needed them but unintrusive. We chose the location as it was close to both St Emillion and Bordeaux. We will definitely return to this beautiful spot and the Grand Bois.

Wonderful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The two weeks we spent at Chateau du Vieux Fourens were absolutely wonderful. There was plenty of space for us all and the surrounding grounds and swimming pool were fantastic. Marie-George and Philippe were truly hospitable hosts and made us feel very welcome. We were amazed by the restoration work that Philippe has completed over the last 25 years - a real labour of love.

We loved the local area. The sight of all the vineyards makes a very orderly countryside view and our favourite place was St Emillion - wine and fine restaurants - perfect!

Our boys, aged 12 and 10 enjoyed spending vast amounts of time in the swimming pool, and the tree climbing course and canoeing in the local area were definite winners.

We will definitely be returning.

Stunning chateaux and grounds

  • 5 of 5

The location of this property is absolutely superb. It is set amongst an ancient forest next to a vineyard. My children and I loved walking around the grounds and swimming in the lovely pool which was very clean. The house was very clean and had a beautiful interior with well thought out details. Philippe and Marie-George were very hospitable during our stay and made us feel very welcome. They provided us with lots of info about the local area and activities.

We hired bikes from Creon and cycled along the cycle path with the children through amazing scenery without the worry of any cars. We also visited Bordeaux and St Emilion, which are both nearby and definitely worth a day trip.

We would highly recommend this property to friends and will definitely come back.
