Chateau / Manor House in Nerigean, Libourne, Aquitaine / Dordogne, France - Historic Chateaux In The Wood And The Vineyard Lovingly Restored In Its Own Vast Groun

The origins of the chateaux dates back to the 14th century when the Aquitaine region was ruled by kings of England. In the 18th century the king of France authorised the construction of the noble house of Vieux Fourens. In the past 25 years the chateaux has been lovingly and authentically restored by its present owners Philippe and Marie George. There are two further outbuildings and a chapel on the grounds of the chateaux. The chapel dates back to the 16th century. It has a crypt and a fountain and if interested the owners would be pleased to tell you the history behind it. Located in the vineyards of Bordeaux you take the long and charming drive through the woods of its own to reach the chateaux in its well kept grounds. The world famous St Emilion and the classy Bordeaux are both UNESCO protected and celebrated for their architecture and their wine. They are waiting to be explored! You will have the choice of discovering the countryside and the local wildlife either on foot or by bike on designated cycle paths along the river Dordogne or through the vineyards. It is for certain that you will be encountering local wildlife such as deer, pheasants, squirrels around the protected and natural reserve of the chateaux before returning and dipping your toes and relaxing by the delightful 12 X 6m pool. This year we add a tree house in the middle of the wood for you to rent to be closer ti wildlife. There is also tennis, golfing, horse riding in the vicinity for the more energetic guests.

Very comfortable accommodation with good quality furnishings. Marie-George and Philippe were great hosts and dogs Pako and Luna were lovely holiday companions. I would recommend the gîte wholeheartedly.

A Wonderful Relaxing Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Our visit began with a very warm welcome from the owners Marie-George and Phillipe. We were shown round their beautiful gite set in spectacular grounds. The cottage is beautifully decorated in a shabby chic vintage style with all the modern amenities you would wish. The master bedroom has a very comfortable king size bed which leads into a large ensuite with a roll top bath, the second bedroom is of a very generous size. Downstairs the spacious living area looks out to a charming decking equipping for outdoor living. The kitchen area is modern and well equipped.

The surroundings of the gite cannot be beaten with peaceful views over the extensive grounds, plenty of woodland to explore, a tree house to find and a small chapel to visit on the estate. The swimming pool was for our own exclusive use and was situated close to the gite, it too was well equipped with plenty of chairs and was fenced for safety.

The owners could not have been more helpful and friendly, we shared a lovely bottle of wine hearing how Marie- George and Phillipe had restored their beautiful home.

To conclude we had a fabulous time and would highly recommend this property. We will definitely be returning!

Endearing

  • 5 of 5

This is a special place, it really is. Yes the gite is exactly as described by others before; very tastefully finished with everything you need and a superb pool, but it is the atmosphere of Grand Bois that makes it so unique. The setting is perfect: the restored chateau and chapel are stunning, the gardens and meadow so calming, the views are beautiful and the mini forest? Just magical.

Whether you want to chill, have an adventurous holiday, or do a bit of both, the location is also ideal. Our family of four did the latter. Between us we went cycling through the surrounding vineyards, horse riding (Ecurie de Camiac), canoeing along the River L'Isle (CKC St-Seurin sur L'isle), golfing (Grand Saint Emilionnais Golf Club), wine tasting in Pomerol, sight seeing in St Emilion, walking along the Dordogne, shopping in Bordeaux, swimming, - and plenty of relaxation too. We also got in some Tour de France watching in Bergerac - so check where the stages are if you stay during July.

There really is plenty to do in this area for all the family and all under an hour away. Lots of good village/small town restaurants too. We recommend La Table in Creon and Le Baron Gourmond in Baron - both within 15 mins drive.

We loved every minute.

Delightful Retreat in the Bordeaux Countryside

  • 5 of 5

As shown in the pictures, this is a very nice space in a beautiful country setting. The unit is well-equipped and nicely furnished. The owners are very helpful and friendly.

The chateau is 15-20 minutes away from St. Emillion and 30 to 40 minutes away from the city of Bordeaux. There are not many restaurants in the immediate vicinity -- though L 'Atmosphere (recommended by the owners) is one town over and quite nice. There is a good bakery and small supermarche in a nearby town.

The unit will work very well for a family that wants to visit the Bordeaux countryside, relax some in the countryside and cook some of their own meals.
