Description

The Farmhouse

We open The Farmhouse during the months of June, July, August and September. Our lovingly restored cottage is full of charm and magic, decorated and designed completely by ourselves. We hope you will feel at home here. Private parking is in the courtyard which is shared by our two smaller gites. A large private garden enclosed by fencing is secure and safe but gives easy access to the 1 acre grounds. The heated family swimming pool and the larger play lawns and garden areas with swings, tramploine and play equipment are available to all of our guests, and even a little stream where kids can potter. We have two double bedrooms and one twin room with a house bathroom. The downstairs living space is open plan with a traditional Breton fireplace, butler sink, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and rayburn (plus electric oven). Our renovation was completed in Spring 2015, so all appliances and fittings are new, we have French and English TV, Wifi, board games, kids' toys, books, and DVDs.

About the property

FR25608

2hrs from Roscoff, 3hrs from St Malo and 45mins from Brest airport, our gites are located in an idyllic part of Finistere.

The varied coastline of sandy beaches, rockpools, craggy cliffs and secluded coves is just a 10 min drive away. Still unspoilt, and far less built up than many other parts of Brittany, our beautiful, family friendly, yet relatively undiscovered beaches, are a rare find. We feel privileged to be able to offer holiday accommodation in this wonderful and special area.

Our beautifully renovated farmhouse, and 2 adjoining gites, plus private family heated swimming pool (open from mid May till mid October), enjoy a secluded 1 acre garden, edged by a stream and woodland.

The heated swimming pool is inside the walls of the beautiful roofless coach-house, across the courtyard from the gites. Our pool is large - 8 x 4 metres, with no shallow end, which gives plenty of room to either swim laps or play games. We heat it to 38 degrees during summer, regardless of the weather. This keeps it warm enough for the smallest of toddlers to use, even when our Brittany weather is not at its best! The poolside is decked, with sunloungers, and the pool adheres to current safety regulations. Outside the coach-house is a seating area screened by shrubbery from the other buildings. The pool can be used at any time of day, and we have found it the perfect place for the kids to get to know one another while parents enjoy some downtime. Towels are provided.

In the garden the swings, trampoline, badminton, swingball, and other play equipment will keep your kids busy, plus some small kids' bikes. Les Hiboux has its own private garden and eating/barbecue area secured by an attractive low fence and flowerbeds, overlooking the grassy play lawn so you can enjoy a glass of wine in comfort while supervising the kids. The Farmhouse has a large private, fenced garden area separated from the main garden, making it safe for small kids and pets and giving extra privacy, whilst at the same time the play lawn is visible from the garden. Our families often like to bring their dogs along, which we welcome at no extra charge, and we will even make your vet's appointment if you wish (please let us know if you wish to bring a pet). We are also aware that some children can be a little nervous of animals so we always check with parents and either the children can get to know the other dogs under supervision, or we can ask owners to keep their dog in the secure parts of the gardens.

The buildings have been very recently renovated by ourselves, maintaining as many original features as possible, such as the beautiful beams, and exposed stonework. We completed the work in 2015, installing modern kitchens, Wifi and satellite TV. There is central heating in Les Hiboux which is available in the colder months, and both properties have woodburning stoves, for which we provide as much wood as you like, at any time of year, free of charge.

If you have children, we provide personalised toyboxes for them, plus each cottage has board games, books, DVDs, TV in English and French and an excellent Wifi connection.

Our kitchens come fully equipped with oven, dishwasher, washing machines, microwaves, toasters, coffeemakers etc. We also leave some basic kitchen supplies such as washing powder, washing liquid, sponges, cling film, tea/coffee, salt/pepper, oil and, during high season, a welcome pack including fresh milk, bread, croissants and other goodies so that you can relax with a cuppa before heading off to the supermarket(5 mins drive in the local village) or unpacking. If you arrive late at night we can put in supplies for your breakfast next day, or just let us know what you need and we can pop to the supermarket for you!

We love having kids to stay and we understand that with small kids packing can be a trial so we have tried to make life as easy for you as possible, providing baby baths, changing mats, travel cots with comfy mattresses and blankets, plates/cups etc, booster seats and highchairs. Let us know if there is anything particular you need and we will do our best to accommodate you.

We have travel cots on hand with cosy mattresses and blankets and we use waterproof mattress protectors on the single beds for your peace of mind if you have little ones.

We also provide plenty of towels and high quality bed linen at no extra cost and, of course, bathroom supplies such as loo rolls and hand soap.

We live all year on site so we can answer any queries and provide advice and recommendations about the area. If you like, we can make your vet or, if necessary, doctor appointments, and can even book a restaurant table for you if you are not confident in using the french language.

Our complex is part of a tiny hamlet called Leskobet, proud guardians of the St Corentin Chapel, which is a local pilgrimage site and connects to a network of walking routes leading to majestic views at the Menez Hom, highest point in Finistere. The mythical stream of St Corentin runs through our garden and feeds eventually into the Odet River at Quimper.

Our local village, Plomodiern, has splendid sea views, a supermarket, tourist office, several restaurants and bakeries, a takeaway pizzeria/creperie and a bustling market each Friday. It is also host to the annual Fete De Menez Hom in August, when locals dressed in Breton costumes parade through the streets together with Breton dancers from all of the regions of Brittany. During summer a Fest Noz is held every Monday night, when all are welcome to join with the locals, trying out these special Breton dances (or just watching of course!).

A ten minute drive away, are a number of sandy beaches, for swimming, surfing, or sand buggying. All are unspoilt, backed by dunes and cliff paths. We will provide you with beach towels and parasols for your daytrips.

Equally accessible is the stunning historic town of Locronan, often used in filmsets, and the canal town of Chateaulin, with cycle tracks along the banks of the beautiful Brest-Nantes canal. Within half an hour, you can visit the facilities of the historic town of Quimper, the fishing port of Duarnenez, or the unspoilt Crozon peninsular with its pleasure beaches and cafes. Further afield it is easy to reach the more touristic beaches of Southern or Northern Finistere, simply take your pick. Or explore the countryside inland. Feel free to ask us for recommendations regarding the many museums, beaches, national parks or attractions nearby.

For the sporty, there is swimming, surfing, and paddle boarding at the nearby beaches, also kite buggys, diving and kayaking are available at Pentrez or Crozon. Cyclists can enjoy the canal paths at the Brest/Nantes canal or the Foret du Nevet at Locronan, and there are tennis courts in the village, a swimming pool at Chateaulin, a kayaking school on the canal, hiking paths, climbing crags and paragliding.

Pet owners can enjoy the many secluded beaches and walks on cliff paths and countryside. The Bretons are particularly dog friendly people and welcome dogs into most of their cafes and restaurants if asked, so you will be able to take your dog with you on many of your day trips.

About Stewart & Tricia Morpurgo

Originally from Jersey, we have lived in Plomodiern with our two little girls for three years. We fell in love with the beautiful, uncrowded beaches and unspoilt coastline which we found in the area, and decided to live here permanently. We have made friends and enjoy a peaceful way of life, making the most of the wonderful beaches when work permits. We truly feel we have found a little slice of heaven!

Stewart & Tricia Morpurgo purchased this house in 2012

Why Stewart & Tricia Morpurgo chose Plomodiern

We love Plomodiern because of its accessability to a whole number of stunning beaches, the nearest of which is just a ten minute drive away on roads that are guaranteed traffic jam free! There is a different beach for every mood: surfing, swimming, rockpooling, kayaking, or you can seek out the little coves accessed only by narrow cliffpaths if you prefer.

We are also within easy reach of the busier beaches on the south coast, such as Pont Aven and Concarneau, for a daytrip, though we always breath a sigh when we get back home to our little idyl!

In summer, our village hosts traditional weekly Breton dances and a vibrant market day, plus the wonderful fete de Menez Hom in August, when visitors from the whole of Brittany wear their local costumes and dance through the streets.

What makes this house unique

With so many unspoilt beaches on our doorstep, find a beach for every mood: swimming, surfing, rockpooling, or discovering little coves. Our gite will suit all who enjoy exploring those havens off the beaten track.

For a daytrip, choose the more touristic beaches at Pont Aven, Concarneau, or Audiern, all just over an hour away. We will provide beach towels and parasols to make packing easier.

Alternatively, relax at the poolside or enjoy our tranquil gardens, which are edged by a pretty stream where kids can potter, and bordered by trees and a small woodland area. We provide sunloungers and barbecues for al fresco eating in luxury. Plenty of outdoor equipment is available plus swings and a trampoline and soft archery, and for the little ones, bikes for supervised cycling, toys and cot/highchair/buggy/carseat.

We have built a heated swimming pool within the walls of one of our beautiful ruined, roofless buildings. A terrace is available at the poolside for sunbathing, screened from other buildings by hedging and shrubbery.

Amazing house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

This house is absolutely perfect for a family holiday. The children loved the freedom to wander over a huge area and we loved them being able to wander safely.

The house feels like it is in the middle of nowhere but is actually just under a mile from a lovely village with everything you could want. Local beaches are beautiful and were quiet even in August.

The pool was lovely and we really liked the setting of it within old barn walls.

The house itself is characterful and extremely comfortable with everything you could need. The garden furniture and BBQ were also great quality.

Al in all we couldn't fault the place and feel sure we will return. We would definitely recommend this house

Fantastic holiday in beautiful farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely wonderful family holiday in the farmhouse. It is every bit as beautiful as the photo's show. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Stewart and Tricia and shown round the property. They had also very kindly left some provisions such as fresh bread, croissants, jam, chocolate spread (which the kids were delighted with), red wine, tea, coffee and milk etc. which meant we could relax and unpack with a nice hot drink ( wine for me, which was lovely) after our long drive from Scotland.

The farmhouse is beautifully furnished to a high standard, open plan living, dining and kitchen area downstairs and three good size bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. We loved snuggling on the sofas in front of the wood burning stove at the end of a busy day.

The back garden is huge with table and chairs for dining al fresco, rattan style sofa/chairs for relaxing and a bbq. The garden has a secure fence surrounding it, which was perfect for us to let our dog run around in. I also enjoyed taking a chair out front to the courtyard as it was a sun trap. The kids also enjoyed the swings and trampoline in the gardens. There are nice walks around the property too for the dog, especially the track leading past the Chapel at the end of the driveway taking in the sea view.

Stewart and Tricia very kindly kept the pool heated for us, even though we were probably out of season for it. Our kids loved it and thankfully the weather was good enough that they were able to use it every day. It is housed inside a roofless barn and is just wonderful. Again, just like the house, it was spotlessly clean and well maintained with an assortment of toys and inflatable for the kids to use and some chairs and loungers for relaxing on.

The farmhouse is just a short distance from the town of Plomodiern where there is a supermarket, bakery, petrol station, and restaurants/bars. We ate out every day, once in Plomodiern in the creperie/pizzeria and would highly recommend it. We took our dog with us everywhere and she was allowed into every restaurant we visited. Stewart and Tricia were on hand to recommend places to visit and we particularly liked Locronan.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the farmhouse and we will definitely return.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review Alan and Danelle, we're so glad you enjoyed yourselves so much. As you were our last guests of the year in the Farmhouse, we were delighted the weather was still warm enough for you to use the swimming pool and gardens and enjoy all of the local beaches and scenery. We really enjoyed meeting you all and would love to have you back again!

Lovely relaxed family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed an extended family holiday for 10 days with two toddlers and two babies. The farmhouse accommodation was perfectly suited to our needs with two large doubles and one twin room, with a homely open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area downstairs. The farmhouse was very well equipped. Tricia and Stewart were extremely helpful by providing all the child and baby equipment we could have wished for. This included an endless selection of toys to keep the toddlers entertained.

The toddlers loved playing on the swing set and trampoline, and in the pool. We spent our days exploring the surrounding region which included picnics on the beaches, swimming in the sea and lunches out in coastal towns/villages. The gite is in a hamlet in a beautiful rural area but is only 5 minutes away from a supermarket so is not at all isolated.

Not too far from the Roscoff ferry, a lovely base to explore Brittany from.

Owner's Response: I'm so pleased you all enjoyed your holiday so much, Janet. At eight weeks, the youngest guests we have had so far, your babies were adorable, and took it all in their stride. You are such a happy family and it was a pleasure to have you with us.

Lovely break in Breton farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We spend a glorious 2 weeks in Plomodiern in the middle of August. Stewart and Tricia were most welcoming and were the perfect hosts - there when we needed them without being intrusive in any way. They were most happy to provide recommendations of places to visit and things to see.

The farmhouse was beautifully furnished, clean and very well equipped - even down to the selection of DVDs, toys and games for our boys. We enjoyed the safe open space of the grounds with plenty of activities to keep the children occupied - the pool was a great hit!

The village - about a mile up the lane - had a decent supermarket and a good array of shops and restaurants. There were of lots of lovely beaches close by and my husband enjoyed the area on his bike with lots of well surfaced smooth roads (unlike in Devon!)

The children are already looking forward to their return visit. All in all it was a fabulous holiday that we couldn't fault in any way - we even got lucky with the weather!

Beautiful property in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in the farmhouse, the weather was nice so we made good use of the pool. The beaches are only a 15min drive away with plenty of free parking and the supermarket is a 5min drive away. Stewart and Tricia are very friendly, the welcome pack of groceries was very handy after our long drive. Fresh cut flowers from the garden was another nice touch. The farmhouse felt very homely, decorated beautifully throughout. We had a very relaxing week and would love to return soon.

A very upsetting experience

  • 1 of 5

The owners were incredibly unpleasant to us after our little one wet the bed. It was shocking to be treated this way and ruined our holiday. A very, very upsetting experience. They withheld our entire deposit, but it is the way we were treated that ruined the experience for us. Utterly devastating to save for, look forward to, and enjoy a holiday to have it all taken from you by unkindness and lack of compassion.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Ian and Emily. I am very sorry that you felt so upset by the loss of your deposit. We love children and always enjoy having them stay at our gites. We also welcome pets and are always sympathetic to any accidents that might arise during the course of a holiday. In your case, after you left, we found extreme amounts of damage in the bedrooms, living rooms, utility room and garden, most of which appeared to have occurred several days earlier and had not been cleaned up. We could not contact you because you did not answer your phone. We had to replace or clean hundreds of pounds worth of furnishings and bedding and clean up before our next guests arrived later that afternoon. The next day, as we still could not contact you by phone, we emailed to inform you we would be using the £200 damages deposit to cover some of our costs. I am truly sorry if you found anything about our behaviour to be unkind or uncompassionate. However, I find myself unable to make any sense of your accusation that we were incredibly unpleasant because we had no contact after discovering the damage apart from the one email which contained nothing but a brief explanation of what we found plus a simple list of the items we were unable to repair. I have looked again and again at the email and find nothing unkind or rude in it at all. As far as I can see, the only way we could have been more compassionate would have been to pay the total costs ourselves. Unfortunately, when accidents of this kind happen, and we have not been informed in time to clean or repair, or the damage is too extensive, there will be costs involved. We are sorry that you felt these costs spoilt your holiday and hope, upon reflection, that you can begin to accept what happened and look back on your holiday as a happy and enjoyable experience.
