Description

Les Hiboux

Sleeps 4, one double, one twin, cot available on request.

The cottage, Les Hiboux, adjoins the main farmhouse with private parking, seating areas and a separate courtyard entrance. A patio door leads from the sunny sitting room to the large private garden, with views across the children's play lawn to the trees and stream that edge the property. The cottage has its own patio area with barbecue, table and chairs, parasol and sun lounger. The heated swimming pool is across the courtyard. Inside, our new renovation boasts original beams, exposed stonework, a woodburner (plus electric heating), French and English TV channels, Wifi, dishwasher and washing machine, microwave and electric coffee maker. We have used the original oak planks in fittings, hand-painted furniture and created a beautiful space to relax in. Renovation work was completed in Spring 2015 so all fittings are modern and functional. All linen and towels are included in the price along with beach towels.

About the property

FR25608

2hrs from Roscoff, 3hrs from St Malo and 45mins from Brest airport, our gites are located in an idyllic part of Finistere.

The varied coastline of sandy beaches, rockpools, craggy cliffs and secluded coves is just a 10 min drive away. Still unspoilt, and far less built up than many other parts of Brittany, our beautiful, family friendly, yet relatively undiscovered beaches, are a rare find. We feel privileged to be able to offer holiday accommodation in this wonderful and special area.

Our beautifully renovated farmhouse, and adjoining gite, plus private heated swimming pool (open from mid May till mid October), enjoy a secluded 1 acre garden, edged by a stream and woodland.

The heated swimming pool is inside the walls of the beautiful roofless coach-house, across the courtyard from the gites. The poolside is decked, with sunloungers, and the pool adheres to current safety regulations. Outside the coach-house is a seating area screened by shrubbery from the other buildings.

In the garden we provide swings, badminton, swingball, and other play equipment, plus some small kids' bikes. Les Hiboux has its own eating/barbecue area overlooking the grassy play lawn so you can enjoy a glass of wine in comfort while supervising the kids. The Farmhouse has a large private, fenced garden area separated from the main garden, making it safe for small kids and pets and giving extra privacy.

The buildings have been very recently renovated by ourselves, maintaining as many original features as possible, such as the beautiful beams, and exposed stonework. We completed the work in 2015, installing modern kitchens, Wifi and satellite TV. There is central heating as well as woodburning stoves.

If you have children, we have plenty of toys on hand, plus board games, books, TV in English and French and an excellent Wifi connection.

We live all year on site so we can answer any queries and provide advice and recommendations about the area.

The complex is part of a tiny hamlet called Leskobet, proud guardians of the St Corentin Chapel, which is a local pilgrimage site and connects to a network of walking routes leading to majestic views at the Menez Hom, highest point in Finistere. The mythical stream of St Corentin runs through our garden and feeds eventually into the Odet River at Quimper.

Our local village, Plomodiern, has splendid sea views, several restaurants and bakeries, a coffee house and a bustling market each Friday. It is also host to the annual Fete De Menez Hom in August, when locals dressed in Breton costumes parade through the streets together with Breton dancers from all of the regions of Brittany. You may spot our children in the parade, who would be happy to show you their traditional costumes. During summer a Fest Noz is held every Monday night, when all are welcome to join with the locals, trying out these special Breton dances (or just watching of course!).

A ten minute drive away, are a number of sandy beaches, for swimming, surfing, or sand buggying. All are unspoilt, backed by dunes and cliff paths. We will provide you with beach towels and parasols for your daytrips.

Equally accessible is the stunning historic town of Locronan, often used in filmsets, and the canal town of Chateaulin. Within half an hour, you can visit the facilities of Quimper, the fishing port of Duarnenez, or the unspoilt Crozon peninsular. Further afield it is easy to reach the more touristic beaches of Southern or Northern Finistere, simply take your pick. Or explore the countryside inland. Feel free to ask us for recommendations regarding the many chateaux, national parks or attractions nearby.

For the sporty, there is a riding school a short walk away, swimming, surfing, kite buggys, tennis courts in the village, a swimming pool at Chateaulin, a kayaking school on the canal, hiking paths, climbing crags and paragliding.

For families, we can provide a cot/highchair/buggy/carseats, but do ask in advance about these. We also provide all linen and towels within our prices to make your packing that much lighter.

About Stewart & Tricia Morpurgo

Originally from Jersey, we have lived in Plomodiern with our two little girls for three years. We fell in love with the beautiful, uncrowded beaches and unspoilt coastline which we found in the area, and decided to live here permanently. We have made friends and enjoy a peaceful way of life, making the most of the wonderful beaches when work permits. We truly feel we have found a little slice of heaven!

Stewart & Tricia Morpurgo purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Stewart & Tricia Morpurgo chose Quimper area

We love Plomodiern because of its accessability to a whole number of stunning beaches, the nearest of which is just a ten minute drive away on roads that are guaranteed traffic jam free! There is a different beach for every mood: surfing, swimming, rockpooling, kayaking, or you can seek out the little coves accessed only by narrow cliffpaths if you prefer.

We are also within easy reach of the busier beaches on the south coast, such as Pont Aven and Concarneau, for a daytrip, though we always breath a sigh when we get back home to our little idyl!

Our village hosts traditional weekly Breton dances and a vibrant market day, plus the wonderful fete de Menez Hom, when visitors from the whole of Brittany wear their local costumes and dance through the streets.

What makes this cottage unique

With so many unspoilt beaches on our doorstep, find a beach for every mood: swimming, surfing, rockpooling, or discovering little coves. Our gite will suit all who enjoy exploring those havens off the beaten track.

For a daytrip, choose the more touristic beaches at Pont Aven, Concarneau, or Audiern, all just over an hour away. We will provide beach towels and parasols to make packing easier.

Alternatively, relax at the poolside or enjoy our tranquil gardens, which are edged by a pretty stream where kids can potter, and bordered by trees and a small woodland area. We provide sunloungers and barbecues for al fresco eating in luxury. Plenty of outdoor equipment is available plus swings and hammocks, and for the little ones, bikes for supervised cycling, toys and cot/highchair/buggy/carseat.

This year we have built a heated swimming pool within the walls of one of our beautiful ruined, roofless buildings. A terrace is available at the poolside for sunbathing, screened from other buildings by hedging and shrubbery.

Wonderful family friendly gite - recommended!

  • 5 of 5

We had a really wonderful 10 night stay in Les Hiboux. The gite was very well stocked with everything we needed, and the owners very kindly went to great efforts to provide lots of toddler items for our 2.5yr old daughter - travel cot, stair gate, high chair, toys and books, plastic plates/cup etc, baby bath, child toilet seat, nappy bin etc. The garden is brilliant for children to race around and also use the swings, slide and trampoline. The weather was a tad rainy during our stay but we still managed a few dips in the heated pool inside gorgeous old stone walls and used the BBC a few times. We enjoyed the local beaches (pentrez and morgat), the Brest aquarium on a rainy day, and Quimper for great indoor food market and atmospheric pottering around the town. Would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Thanks Jim and Claire for your review. We're so glad you enjoyed your holiday and found plenty to do despite the Breton weather being rather temperamental during your stay! It was lovely meeting Kiera and we'd love to see you all again if ever you decide to make another trip to our area.

Fantastic property in peaceful location !

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Les Hiboux for 2 weeks in early August with our 6 year old son. My mother joined us for our second week and shared the twin room with our son. The accommodation was perfect for us, it was spotless. Stewart and Tricia made us very welcome on arrival and were always available if we needed to ask anything. The cottage was well stocked and there was a generous complimentary supply of fresh produce (milk, butter, coffee, croissants, biscuits, vin rouge, bread etc.) on our arrival. We enjoyed relaxing in the garden behind Les Hiboux whilst our son was enjoying the swings and playing in the garden. We used the BBQ on several occasions. The swimming pool was perfect for us and we all enjoyed it.

We traveled by ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo overnight. We were amazed how quiet the roads were from St Malo to the cottage. We stopped at Quintin, approx 90 mins from St Malo, a nice village with ample parking near the church, a playground, and of course a handy boulangerie !

The lovely sandy beaches near the cottage were virtually empty until the locals arrived around 3-4pm. It was perfect. We ate at both L'Ane Rouge and Le Kreiz-Ker in Plomodiern and enjoyed their plats du jours. We also ate at Le Grand Bleu twice as we liked it so much. We were fortunate to see the annual Fete du Menez-Hom in Plomodiern where the locals dressed in traditional clothing and danced, sang and played music processing around the town.

We enjoyed our holiday so much that we have already booked to return in 2018 with friends.

Breton Idyll

  • 5 of 5

Stewart and Tricia have created a wonderful environment in which to escape from the fast lane. Even the furnishings and colour scheme are soothing. Our two teenage daughters loved the pool and the freedom of the extensive grounds. Stewart even magicked a trampoline from 'somewhere'! Plomodiern has an excellent supermarket and interesting markets twice a week. The beach at Kervezean (sp?) was a 10 minute drive. Golden sands and surprisingly very warm sea for swimming. Very close for easy trips to our favourite places of Morgat, Quimper and Locronan.

Our whippet loved the wild walks straight from the door, where each evening we would go on nature hunts. Surprising sightings included owls, jays, hares, red deer, baby newts, hummingbird hawksmoth and an adder.

Our two weeks in the beautiful Breton countryside will keep us going for a long time.

Fantastic cottage in peaceful rural location, lovely walks from house and close to surf beaches.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Les Hiboux, a tastefully renovated cottage in the countryside. Our party of 3 adults and 2 dogs were met by Stewart and Tricia upon arrival who could not have been more welcoming. Stewart gave us some fab tips for the local surf spots and assisted with booking our vet visit for the dogs on our return trip to UK. They were always on hand if needed but never intrusive. The cottage was beautifully decorated and cosy with everything supplied that we could possibly need for a two week stay. We rarely used the tv but English channels were available and due to the heatwave the woodburner remained unlit but no doubt would have been a lovely touch on a cool evening. The washing machine facility was very useful and the bbq was utilised every night! The fridge and freezer were a perfect size to stock for two weeks and most of our shopping was done at the supermarket in Plomodiern. The garden was amazing, like a small field which the dogs loved; especially the little stream that ran through. Wildlife was in abundance as we woke up to deer and hedgehogs in the garden and stunning dragon flies buzzing about. The terrace at the rear of the property was a lovely spot to unwind and laze about on the loungers. A great vantage spot to watch the dogs play in their field! The pool area was another brilliant area to chill and read a book or two. The pool itself was very clean and lovely and warm: a good many hours of fun were spent playing about on the inflatables provided. Amazing to have such a lovely pool to ourselves and a great sun trap too! There were beautiful walks and cycling opportunities both from the cottage and surrounding area. The church opposite is worth a look and a cycle along the cycle trail canalside at Chateaulin is fab. Our favourite beaches were Pors Ar Vag, (10 minute drive) La Palue (30 min drive and a walk required and remote) L'Arb (Crozon). Could not recommend the cottage and area enough. It was perfect for relaxation and sports. The most dog friendly location ever. The local beaches ban dogs but sensible walking times and using the remote ends of the beaches and low tide line never stopped us enjoying the beaches with the dogs. The locals seem to take little notice of the signs. Amazing holiday ....... Thank you so much for having us stay.

Fantastic accommodation in a wonderful location.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week here in May. The accommodation was fantastic and in a lovely quiet location but still close to local amenities. The swimming pool was glorious and a big hit with the children! Some lovely beaches just a short drive away. Plenty to do in the local area too. A really lovely holiday!
