Lovely 16th Century Cottage, backing onto open fields

Overview

Property

Updated: 04-Dec-2016
Stunning, 2 bedroom, 16th century Cottage in Pickwick, Corsham, Wiltshire,

16th Century Grade 2 Listed Cottage in hamlet of Pickwick, recently refurbished from top to bottom & tastefully furnished including many antiques and family heirlooms.

Ideally located for Bath, Stonehenge, Avebury henge, the Cotswolds and many lovely gardens open to the public.

The stunning owner maintained cottage gardens, with a large shingled patio and Dovecote are a feature of this property. Other features include beamed ceilings and stone mullioned windows. Gas central heating, a gas real flame fire in the lounge and Everest Secondary Double Glazing mean the property keeps warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Like most old English cottages the bathroom is on the ground floor, accessed via the kitchen. This means it is not always suitable for groups which comprise entirely of adults as those sleeping in the attic bedroom have to pass through main bedroom to get to the bathroom. Albeit for those sleeping in the main double bedroom for night times there is a en-suite toilet (macerator) and small wash basin.

The attic bedroom is also accessed via a very steep flight of stairs which means it is not suitable for young children. Plus it has restricted head height so not ideal for those who are very tall.

Please note due to the number of bookings already made it is not possible to rent this cottage on a long term basis.

About the Owner

Hi, I'm Lorraine & I live in the adjoining cottage.

For many years I rented this property out on a fixed term basis but as it has been a long held ambition to own a holiday let and having recently semi-retired I have decided to give it a go.

As you may have guessed from the description I love gardening and originally bought the cottage as the garden was very neglected. In fact so was the cottage! Some 15 years later it now looks very different.

I hope you like the look of the property and if you have any questions please e-mail me.

Great property exactly as described and as per photos - no surprises

  • 5 of 5

A lovely property very well appointed and beautifully furnished - cosy and perfect for a stay where you want to relax at 'home' rather than be out for meals. Would have no hesitation in recommending to others.

Warm and cosy cottage with a wealth of character. Easily accessible from main road to Bath.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Dickens cottage very much. There are many beautiful National Trust properties nearby Lacock Abbey (Harry Potter cloisters) and Castle Coombe (most beautiful village in England apparently) were a short drive away. Corsham is a pretty Town and worth a visit while there. We spent the day in Bath, using the Park and Ride, free parking and only paying for the Bus. A magnificent Georgian City.

Fully equipped kitchen and comfortable bed.

It exceed our expectations and they were already high. Lorraine was a gracious hostess. The cottage is a delight and the garden was beautiful. We enjoyed our 16 day stay and would highly recommend.

Charming cottage exceeded expectations!!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very charming & tastfully decorated. This was absolutely immaculate. Lorraine's Englush garden is breathtaking & was wonderful having my coffee next to the empty field in bank of the property.

One tip, use the address she tells you that is the house next door. The actual postal code led our GPS the wrong direction.

Second stay - absolutely lovely

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay this year. As before the cottage was lovely and cosy, and the garden even better. Lovely to eat breakfast outside. The beds are the most comfortable ever. All the facilities we could need. A very good location for visiting the area. Corsham itself is very picturesque. Bowood House and the rhododenron woodland garden thouroughly reccommended

Lovely cottage and nothing too much trouble

  • 5 of 5

A lovely 3 night stay in the immaculate cottage. Lorraine was so helpful and even put ice in the fridge for when we got home as there is no freezer in the cottage. Very well equipped and furnished. So great to have hot water on tap at all times rather than waiting for a tank to heat up.

Location

From the Owner

I mainly purchased the cottage to get my hands on the very neglected garden. But also because my cottage next door has access rights across its back garden to get into mine. Pickwick, if you have tried to look it up on a map is actually two sides of a road, rarely appears on maps and indeed the postcode for the cottage doesn't register on most sat navs. In addition to the historic links with Charles Dickens, Pickwick is a delightful small hamlet with easy access to the M4, train & coach links to London which were important to me at the time of purchase.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Bristol at 60 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Hare & Hounds at 300 Metres Nearest Train : Chippenham at 6.5 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : M4 at 10 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Hare & Hounds at 300 Metres Car: recommended

Travel:

Heathrow & Bristol Airports are roughly an hours drive from the cottage. Or there is a National Express coach service from London Victoria and London Heathrow which stops just a few 100 meters from the cottage.

Distances:

The historic village of Corsham where the Town scenes in the latest series of Poldark are filmed is a 10 minute walk. Castle Coombe where War Horse and the original Dr Doolittle were filmed is a 10 minute drive away. As is the National Trust village of Lacock, home to where Harry Potter, the Cranford Chronicles, Pride & Prejudice, with Colin Firth, and many other historic films/TV programmes have been filmed. Whilst Bath is a 20 minute drive - outside of rush hour!

Further Details:

Corsham contains everything you need. A small Co-op supermarket, independent butcher, deli, bakery, fruit and veg and florists to name a few & all within walking distance. Corsham Court is home to peacocks which can often be seen roaming the village. Whilst Lacock has Lacock Abbey where the first photograph was taken. Of course Bath has Bath Abbey, The Roman Baths, many beautiful Regency buildings and amazing shopping. And in the other direction at Swindon, home of the Great Western Railway you will find the Railway Museum and a MacArther Glen Outlet Village.

Facilities

From the Owner

I believe it is the gardens that make this property stand out. Consequently if you want to sit and enjoy someone else hard work this is the place for you. I am also able to give you if you wish, plants which are grown in the garden as I am forever potting up things that self seed or spread. Which means you can take a reminder of your stay away with you.

It is also accessed by a steep narrow staircase. But this quirkiness adds to its charms. Outside: Stunning owner maintained Cottage Gardens. The front gardens are filled with traditional cottage plants. The back garden has a large shingle patio with wooden outdoor table and four chairs. Smaller patio overlooking field has cast iron table and 2 chairs. Dovecote with white doves. Greenhouse - used by owner. Large lawn with ancient cooking apple tree and large borders containing more traditional cottage garden plants. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen not included. Available at £10 per person per week. The property is cleaned weekly. Other: In addition to a front porch there is also a back porch which is the entrance typically used to access the property.
