Rustic Farmhouse ConvertedWith Private Pool And Mature Garden With Seaviews

Overview

Property

Updated: 29-Nov-2016
House in Gharb, Island of Gozo, Malta-Gozo - Ideal Location On The Edge Of Village But Still In Walking Distance To Foodshops And Restaurants

This 400 year old farmhouse has been in the family for 16 years. Originally converted in the 70's by the head designer of Dartington Glass, the present owner has taken great care to restore the house over the years by retaining its original simplicity and rustic charm while adding the modern conveniences.

The house is perfectly positioned on a small square on the outskirts of the village overlooking the countryside and San Dimitri chapel and with seaviews in the distance. On a clear day you can see Sicily in the distance.

It is only a 5 minute walk to the food stores and restaurants and if feeling particularly lazy the breadman, veg man, fish man and drinks man visit the square in their vans.

The house enjoys a beautiful swimming pool designed by the owner and inspired by her travels to Thailand. The mature garden provides a perfect natural umbrella with its 7 mature palm trees allowing for a respite from the sun and lovely entertainment space with a large old cable table seating 12 and another Indian marble table seating 6 and a barbecue. This pool area is cordoned off very tastefully and practically with a wooden fence that runs along one side of the pool area making it safe for children and a blessing for parents who can relax while eating their lunch in the garden and not having to look up every minute to check on the children.

There is a housekeeper, pool man and gardener who look after the house. The housekeeper can also provide additional cleaning during your holiday and there is also babysitting if required.

The owner is English/Maltese and is happy to advise on any additional holiday requirements. She writes a local restaurant guide - The Definitive(ly) Good Guide to Restaurants in Malta & Gozo -www.restaurantsmalta.com and the Malta Baby & Kids Directory - www.maltababyandkids.com and organises local Artisan Markets on the islands - www.maltaartisanmarkets.com and so is the perfect person to ask advise on dining out and anything to do with children in Malta and Gozo or arts and crafts.

This unique house has been featured in two design magazines.

I am English/Maltese having been brought up in Malta and attended boarding school in the UK and University in Malta. We have two children aged 3 and 8 so I am well adversed with what is required in the house to make life as comfortable and simple as possible. Romantic inner courtyard with white against blue skies, flowering vines, colourful glass tiles.

Flagstone paved farmhouse courtyard inviting you outside for breakfast. The children's laughter lingers around the crystal clear saltwater pool. Evening drinks by the pool or overlooking flashing lighthouse and rustic rural scenes in the changing hues of sunset.

A white stone staircase inviting you to rest in the cool secluded bedrooms. Master bedroom has you sleeping under wide stone arches with gentle breezes wafting the generous expanses of space. There is a private balcony with outdoor shower overlooking the sea and capturing the many bird calls of Gozo. We wish we had more time to stay longer.

Wonderful, relaxing holiday.

  • 5 of 5

This is delightful house that was the perfect getaway for our family. There were 6 of us and we thought we might get on top of each other but there was so much space that that never happened. The house is conducive to maximum chill out. This could be by the pool or living room. The house is tasteful in decor throughout and has every amenity one could wish for. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone wanting a break.

Wonderful Mamma Mia House!

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we walked in we knew we had made the right decision. A real life Mamma Mia house; blue doors, white washed walls, beautiful tiled courtyard, amazing outside area and pool (very deep). The bedrooms all had floor standing fans as they are very hot at night. The master bedroom is massive and a lot cooler than the other bedrooms. The lounge is beautiful with an area to lie down and rest in the middle which is the size of a double bed. The house has a utility room with washing machine upstairs and clothes line. There are great views from the roof. The kitchen has everything you need with a large gas stove, microwave, 2 fridges and dishwasher. The garden has a gas bbq and lots of seating. Each night we put the pool lights on and sat outside and enjoyed the heat and peace and quiet.

Lidl and Waitrose are only a few minutes’ drive away in Victoria. You pass both on the way to Gharb.

We took the owners good restaurant guide book out in the car with us each day and found some amazing restaurants around the Island. As the Island is only 8/9 miles long it didn't take long to get around and the driving was very easy and safe.

We were looking for a quiet retreat to R&R and we got just that. We will definitely be returning.

Paradise in Gozo

  • 5 of 5

located in the quiet village of Gharb, this marvelous house is charming as described. We enjoyed the rustic side of the house with the indonesian decoration touch. The shade in the garden is very appreciated during warm days (very often) as well as the pool....and the shower on the balcony !

Nancy the maid and Lisa the owner are very helpfull and kind.

Highly recommanded !

A perfect October Break

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a very relaxing October break with our two young children. They found the house enchanting and we loved staying in a house which was so full of character. The kitchen was extremely well equipped. In fact, every room is very spacious. We had a good balance of tranquility and switching off, whilst the kids enjoyed the swimming pool. Would recommend!

Wonderful Gharb Farmhouse Not To Be Missed!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a wonderful, traditional and spacious farmhouse, then this is the property for you! The property has 4 well sized bedrooms - one double on the ground level, a double on the upper level, a double & single (in one room) on the upper and a HUGE master room with a double, single and cot. There are 4 bathrooms – two on the lower level and two on the upper level, as well as a beautiful hidden outdoor shower on the balcony to the master room not to be missed!

Upon entering the farmhouse there is a small courtyard that connects all the rooms. There is a very large living room, a dining room that seats 8 and an extremely well stocked kitchen. I don’t think I have ever stayed anything that quite literally has every last thing you need! Outside in the garden you’ll find two hammocks, a large dinning table and the best part – the pool! There were 6 sun loungers and two soft seating in the pagoda. The rear of the property then looked out to extensive farmland and the sea in the very far distance, so you’ll be guaranteed not to be disturbed here. The property was well maintained and clean, with an option for additional cleaning during our stay.

The farmhouse is situated in Gharb, a small village 20 minutes north west of Mgarr where the ferry terminal is. A short 5/10 minute walk will bring you to the main church, a few restaurants, supermarkets and the bus stop for local transport. We hired a car for the day to explore the island which I’d recommend, but public transport was just as easy. The main town of Victoria was a 10/15 minute drive from Gharb, so you are never too far from anything.

Lisa who owns the property was super helpful. From my first email enquiry, up until I had arrived home, she was on hand to answer every last question and make the booking process as simple as possible. I wish all owners would be this helpful! We had one small issue with ants in the lower level bedroom, but reported this once we checked out. Other than that, I would recommend the property without hesitation to any family or group of friends wishing to visit Gozo. Thanks for a great stay :)

Location

From the Owner

When I was young we would always visit Gozo from Malta and so I have lots of fond memories of time spent there at the various locations including Ramla, Xlendi and Victoria. The sea is divine and the life relaxed. Our house is perfectly positioned away from the core area of Gharb but easily accessible to the amenities and restaurants. We can escape to our house with our children and friends and enjoy the pool area and entertaining in the garden. We love to go for long walks from the house and bike rides and will organise picnics in the countryside as well as days on the beach.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beach is Dwejra and the Inland Sea which is about 3 kilometres away. The best sandy beaches Ramla and our favourite San Blas (but don't tell anyone) are slightly further away about a 20 minute car journey.

There are some lovely walks in the surrounding area with our favourite which starts from the house and takes you through the valley to the cliff edge and along the cliffs overlooking the great expanse of the Mediterranean. This route and others in the area are great for mountain biking too.

The village core is only a 5 minute walk away with several eateries which are family friendly and very reasonably priced.

Ta Pinu is in walking distance and is worth a visit and is the Crafts Village on the way to San Lawrenz village.

Travel:

Gozo is just a 20 minute ferry ride from Malta. There are regular flights to Luqa International Airport with most national airlines including AirMalta, British Airways and Ryan Air amongst many.

Once in Malta it is an easy journey to Gozo by taxi or hired car to the ferry terminal about 30 minutes away and then just a 20 minute ferry ride across to Gozo. The house is a 15 minute car journey from the ferry in Gozo.

Further Details:

As well as the sea and sun and relaxation in the summer months, Gozo offers a wonderful selection of activities which might otherwise be overlooked including some lovely country walks from the house. The best time for walks is in Spring and Autumn when the island is greener and more fragrant.

Mountain biking and diving with some of the best dives in Malta and Gozo area also popular. Numerous schools offer PADI courses for both beginners up to advanced divers. There is also some great snorkelling to be had around the island which the children love.

Gozo has some of the best award winning restaurants on the islands which are easily accessible from the house and are only a short drive away. Check out www.restaurantsmalta.com for more info on restaurants.

Opera in Gozo - Gozo has two main theatres the Astra and the Aurora. Both produce an opera each year and bring over foreign singers to sing with local artists.

Feasts - June and July is the Feast Season when a commemoration to the saint is celebrated every year. The five day festivities include the triduum, the eve of the feast, and the feast day itself. Apart from the church services, the celebrations are highlighted by outdoor activities, mainly in the form of band marches and spectacular firework displays. Gharb celebrates its feast in July so is a great time to visit and mix and mingle in all the activities and see the impressive fireworks.

History and Myth -There are two prehistoric structures known as Ggantija. They are the most impressive and well preserved of all the temples in the Maltese Islands. They are believed to be the oldest free-standing monuments in the world. There are numerous tales from the legend of Calypso ensnaring Odysseus in her cave above Ramla Bay, to the legend of San Dimitri in Gharb (the farmhouse looks towards the chapel)
