About Matthew James

Hi, I'm Matthew and together with my 3 brothers we own Bryn Sion. The property has been in our family since it was built in the 1920s by our great great uncle. If you're interested in our history, please visit our website www.jamesproperties.net where you'll find how my family are rooted in the story of this village city and how my ancestors helped shape and develop it.

I'm an architect by profession, working in London for the first part of my career until I came home to St.Davids a few years ago. It's a wonderfully enchanting place to live. We've let residential properties for generations and decided this year to convert this property to a holiday rental. It's ideally located, has an abundance of space, inside and outside and I've tried to provide everything that will make your stay a great one.

Why Matthew James chose St Brides Bay, St Davids & The West Coast

Excellent property in central location

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in this superbly comfortable and well-laid out property. The listing is very accurate and all facilities are of a very high standard. Matthew is a friendly and amenable host who provided excellent customer service and was in easy contact throughout our stay. We love St Davids and had an enjoyable meal at its latest restaurant addition - St Davids Kitchen. We hope to return to 31b on another occasion.

Nice place

  • 3 of 5

Matthew welcomed us to the apartment and showed us around. It's a bit of a strange layout but had everything we wanted, including a very comfortable double bedroom at the back of the property. The bedrooms are not particularly small but full of quite large, old-fashioned furniture so did seem quite crowded.

The kitchen is very large and fully equipped with everything we needed. However, the lay out is a bit odd as the sink and fridge are on one side of the room and the cooker and cupboards on the other so there is a lot of traipsing back and forth....which is a good thing if you're wearing a FitBit!

It can be tricky to find a space to offload luggage outside the apartment but we were lucky second time around and there is parking provided close by. Be careful not to park on the main road for longer than the allotted time, even with a parking permit, as we saw several cars with parking tickets.

St David's is a lovely place and a good base for exploring the area. It does get very busy with tourists over the holidays but there are a lot of good shops and a fabulous deli.

It would have been useful to have had instructions about how to silence the smoke alarms as on two occasions we tripped them whilst cooking, even with the back door and the kitchen window open, as there is no extraction fan. There is also no instruction on the recycling arrangements included in the apartment information. Beware if there is a large group of people in the apartment upstairs as we were woken up on a couple of mornings by heavy footsteps above the bedroom, from which we presumed that the upstairs kitchen is above the double bedroom.

Overall, we had a lovely stay in St David's but would probably not stay here again.

Owner's Response: I am disappointed that 31b was not suitable for your holiday in St. Davids and I would like to address the issues raised in your review: “layout” – it may be strange to find one bedroom at the rear and the other within the plan of the apartment. This was designed as such during the refurbishment in order to maximise the space and avoid having redundant corridor space and smaller rooms. Guests, be they 2 couples or families like this layout as it affords better privacy. “crowded bedrooms” – the bedrooms are furnished with period and modern furniture appropriate to an Edwardian townhouse. Each bedroom has the minimum provision as specified by the Welsh tourist board. A bedroom with no dressing table/chest or wardrobe would not meet these standards. Kitchen layout – the kitchen is designed to utilise all available wall space efficiently. There are 3 room doors, a large window which floods it with natural daylight and an original chimney breast, all of which dictate the layout. Previous culinary proficient guests have praised its spaciousness, layout and efficiency. No extractor fan is fitted as this would require external ducting not permitted within a conservation area. A recirculating extractor would simply remove smells, whereas opening a window is a far more practical solution. ‘smoke alarms’ – The alarms are required by law to be a ‘wired’ system and respond to both smoke/heat. They silence themselves once the potential threat has subsided. They cannot be tampered with in order to silence as they also provide warning to adjoining properties. It is best to avoid causing them to trigger. Parking – there is ‘one hour’ street parking directly outside with ample space to unload/load luggage. A designated private parking area is provided just around the corner so guests avoid the worry of penalties. Recycling –recycling refuse bags are provided and I do not require guest to feel that it is their responsibility to deal with the disposal of refuse whilst on vacation. As outlined on arrival, if there are any queries, I am only a text or call away with an answer. The apartment is presented as detailed in the description and images provided on the website. This review is in complete contrast to another review received this week by previous guests, who are travel writers and have published their review in the Mago Guide, where they name 31b and myself as their top host for their 6 month Europe and North America trip. http://www.magoguide.net/st-davids-rental-review/

amazing place

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay, at the Apartment, and once again were delighted to say how great it has been.

Matthew as before is lovely full of welcoming smiles and nothing is a problem, he was here to greet us with the keys to the apartment which is a 2 (double) bedroom with the master bedroom being en suite, wet room. the kitchen is large with a dining table in and has everything a good kitchen needs, also a dishwasher and washer/dryer.

The sitting room, is nice and bright and plenty of seats, a smart t.v and fire, a good place to relax after a day out.

The bathroom, has a bath/shower, and there is always hot water.

The bedding and towels are of hotel quality as with everything in the apartment.

there's a patio area by the back door and a dog safe garden at the back which is a lovely place to sit out. There is 2 small outbuildings for storing of wetsuits etc.

The apartment is very clean and well looked after, and the welcome goodie pack is so nice.

The apartment is in St Davids about a min walk from the centre yet is quiet.

Well equipped property in great location

  • 4 of 5

This property was an ideal base for our week's holiday. Perfectly situated to enjoy all the delights of St. David's including the wide choice of eateries. We were so well catered for that we barely needed to use the spacious and well equipped kitchen. We enjoyed several breakfasts at the very friendly Sound Cafe. The bedrooms are small but the beds are very comfortable and there is storage space for suitcases etc.

Comfortable Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

What a spacious and comfortable holiday home!

We spent 14 nights here in St. David's and felt very much at home. Quiet at night, very comfortable beds and a large bright kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine. Everything was pretty new and in very good condition! Conveniently located just minutes away from our "private" parking lot, supermarket, tearooms and fine restaurants and the Cathedral we felt at ease exploring the neighbourhood - including wanderful walks to nearby St. Non's, and still further along the Pembrokeshire Coast path.

Yes, we would love to come back again, and yes, choosing "Bryn Sion" 31 on New Street would be our number 1 choice. Many thanks to Matthew who proved to be a very helpful and attentive host.

Fantastic place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Just had a fantastic week here in the heart of St Davids. Five of us (and our dog) really enjoyed staying in the upstairs flat - it was lovely and spacious and had everything we needed. Our two teenage daughters particularly liked having the loft room with the TV to chill out in each night:). Having a parking spot nearby was a big bonus too!

We were lucky enough to have great weather and so it was lovely to be able to sit out in the garden. It was very private and peaceful and direct access from the kitchen meant that our dog could easily come and go too. We loved the period decor coupled with modern accessories. There was an abundance of hot water and all the beds were really comfortable with lovely crisp bedding.

Many thanks Matthew for making the booking process so easy and for all your help. A great time was had by all and we are hoping to come again soon!

Bus links to Fishguard Harbour, 13 miles, to connect to Irish ferries, also to Haverfordwest, 17 miles to rail station.

Cardiff airport is approx 2 hours away.

Distances:

The picturesque harbour village of Solva is about 3 miles eastbound. Haverfordwest, the market town of Pembrokeshire is 17 miles eastbound.

Further Details:

The city offers a variety of shops ranging from those selling local fresh produce, art and craft, surfing equipment, shoes and clothing. St. Davids seems to be emerging as a centre for clothing retail, attracting brands such as Fat-Face, White Stuff, Joules and Crew to name but a few. The city also boasts a fine farmers market which springs up around the market square every Thursday.

the main attraction is the wonderful 12th Century Cathedral and nearby Bishop's Palace. Both these stand low in the Vale of Roses on the river Alun. History tells us that this site was chosen so as to keep them safe and out of the sight of Viking invaders. Today the Cathedral is not only a place of worship, but is a spectacular venue for concerts, music festivals, ceremonial events and indeed as a film set for movie productions.

The Cathedral is unique and is one of Wales' primary tourist attractions. It is said that in the 12th Century, Pope Calixtus II decreed that two pilgrimages to St. Davids were equal to one to Rome.

Engulfing this unique village city is the beautiful coastline that attracts walkers from all over the globe. its breathtaking scenery offers an incredible resource of wildlife, bith flora and fauna, spectacular seabirds and sea life. Caves are stumbled across and offer their enchantment, and windswept beaches of golden sand provide ideal locations for picnicking, walking and many other outdoor activities such as horse riding, surfing, coasteering and kayaking.
