About David A Hirst

I am now retired and bought two small properties to rent out and as a retirement project. I have enjoyed working on this property and I may live there myself one day! I have lived in the area for 20 years and it was always an ambition to live near York it is such an amazing place. I love the history particularly as its possible to go back 2000 years.

David A Hirst purchased this house in 2013

Why David A Hirst chose North Yorkshire

I always wanted a property in this particular area as it is attractive and I knew it would get more popular. It has the best of both worlds in that it has its own community and shops but is close to the Centre of York and all its attractions.

What makes this house unique

It is a great place to be and has a wonderful community yet it is within easy walking distance of the Centre and historical sites.

The only problem is that the food at the Pig & Pastry Cafe is so good its difficult to stay away! I buy something every time I visit to clean the house!.

Just to stay in this area is a unique experience and will be enjoyable as well as an excellent base for visiting York and surrounding area.

Lovely house and great location. Exellent value for money.

  • 5 of 5

I have just spent 5 day in the upside down house with my husband and daughter. We really enjoyed our stay. The house is perfect, and in a perfect location. The house itself has everything you need and is very clean and cosy. The location is only a 10 minute walk from the city centre. If we were to return to York I would book this property again. I would highly recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this review. We do try to make it a nice place to stay. I still count myself very lucky that I was looking to buy when this particular property came on the market for its quirky nature and great location. David

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

David's house is very beautiful and spotless. The kitchen is very well equipped, the beds are comfortable, and the shower is just great! Although the apartment is about 15 minutes walk from the train station, Sainsbury supermarket and an excellent bakery is a minute away. Fruit and vegetables shops are close by as well as local restaurants. We paid £7 for a taxi ride from the train station to the apartment and didn't need to use the bus during our stay in York because it also takes about 15 minutes to walk to the Shambles. David gave us a very warm welcome the day of our arrival and we can tell that he's a kind and very thoughtful host. All in all we loved every minute of our stay at David's apartment and highly recommend this lovely apartment.

Well located, spacious and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The upside down house in York was a wonderful place to stay. Location-wise, it is great with most everything within a short (10-15 minute) walk. We had a rental car but did not use it once while in York. Places to eat are, literally, across the street. We particularly enjoyed the Pig and Pastry. The flat itself was wonderful. Very spacious and comfortable with multiple rooms and plenty of room to spread out and relax. Really unique, interesting lighting inside ( my wife loved the fixtures). Spacious restroom, comfortable bed, a bottle of wine and other items in a welcome basket all made for a very welcoming, warm place to stay. We did not get the chance to meet David, but his answers to messages were always prompt and very helpful. I would not hesitate to stay here again or to recommend it to anyone wanting to visit York.

Wonderful apartment and location.

  • 5 of 5

Apartment was very clean, ready for us even though we arrived a little early, and is in a fabulous location. Lovely hot shower, comfy beds, a short walk to attractions, and several excellent places to eat just outside the front door.

We loved our time in York and would most definitely stay here again.

Upside down house York

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay, great location and welcome pack (Milk, Teabags, coffee and bread sticks made us feel welcome. We didn’t give David a proper heads up on when we expected to arrive and had requested an extra night at short notice which he was happy to provide. This meant we arrived earlier that he expected, but this did not seem to faze him and we were made welcome.

The travel cot is large and we were the first to use the high chair for out 2 ½ year old son.

I would not hesitate using this location again.

Perfect location for a trip to York!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights in this lovely property on the Bishy Road - it is an absolute gem! Clean, comfortable and well-equipped - our son loved that it was 'upside down'! Just a 10 minute walk into the city centre and all the amazing visitor attractions - we didn't use our car the entire time we were there. Lots of lovely independent shops, cafes and restaurants on the Bishy Road and we also took an evening stroll out to some great eateries in the centre of York too. The only suggestion we have is that provision of a small fold up table and chairs - we only ate breakfast 'in' but as we always eat at a table, we're not used to balancing on laps!! A minor point though and didn't spoil our short break at all. All-in-all, we had a fabulous half term break - thank you David for the loan of your house as our 'base' - we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking to spend some time in York!
