Spacious 1-bedroom duplex apartment with sea views, sleeps 4. Cot and high chair hire available. Private parking. AC and heating. Free wifi. Modern, fully-equipped kitchen leads onto open-plan living area with DVD and CD players, and new 27" flat-screen TV receiving a wide range of English and other language channels. Terrace overlooks the gardens. Upstairs is a large balcony with panoramic sea views, family bathroom, and twin bedroom with safe, Juliet balcony and sea view. The lovely low-rise complex of 91 apartments has a reception (open 24 hours in season) with currency exchange and details of excursions. Lovely gardens, pool with children's area, tennis courts and café bar (open 09:30-18:00 from Easter to end of October, later in peak season) make it great for children of all ages. Windmill Restaurant open Thursday-Saturday evenings for a €35, 3-course table d'hote meal with three choices for each course. Ideal location for relaxing away from it all, yet just 12 mins walk downhill to the lively old town with its many shops, bars, cafés and restaurants, the Fishermen's Beach or the Marina. Other nearby attractions include Salgados golf course, waterparks and Zoomarine, and the famous 'Strip' of Albufeira new town with its buzzing night life and range of eating places. Local circular (Giro) bus stops at the foot of the hill, but a taxi will only cost around €8 to the old town or the Strip.

I live in England and am retired after a career in education. Having married a Canadian in May 2017, I spend part of each year in Ontario, while maintaining a house in Yorkshire. Between us we have 4 sons, 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren. I have 3 years' experience of sharing my home with paying guests, and 8 of letting a holiday cottage in the UK. I'm now excited to be letting an apartment in Albufeira. My aim has always been for guests to feel welcome and at home, and to enjoy their stays as much as I do.

Why Mrs Anne Francis chose Algarve

I fell in love with the Algarve on my first visit in 2006 and was drawn back 5 times before having the opportunity to put in an offer for my very own holiday apartment in December 2014. For me this is primarily a winter sun getaway, but I hope you will also find it a comfortable, relaxing and scenic base at any time of year. Enjoy the laid-back pace of life and local cuisine. The people are friendly and English is widely spoken. Do explore not only the coastal resorts with their sandy beaches and amazing caves and rock formations, but also inland and mountain towns and villages with their olive groves, citrus orchards, and cork and pine plantations. The beauties of creation and the history of civilisations combine to make the Algarve an exceptional and unforgettable destination.

What makes this apartment unique

I chose Windmill Hill because it is a pretty, low-rise development in a quiet location yet still only a short walk to shops, eating places and beaches. Local buses and cheap taxis make getting further afield easy, too, and the site has free parking. I love the white buildings with their blue shutters, the white cobbled walkways, the beautifully maintained gardens, the large pool, the landmark windmill and the panoramic sea, town and country views. The reception and café are useful facilities. Whether you're returning from a family day on the beach; retail therapy at the markets, shops and malls; excursions as far away as Lisbon to the north or across the Spanish border to Seville; or making the most of the vibrant night life, the apartment provides a tranquil, restoring haven.

Please note this is a no smoking property. Sorry, no pets. Outside: Private patio with table, chairs and parasol with stand, overlooking garden area. Balcony similarly furnished, and has panoramic views across the Old Town, the sea and countryside to distant hills. Shared outdoor pool with children's area (unheated). Landscaped gardens with palm trees, orange trees and a variety of colourful flowering plants. The lawns and bushes are beautifully manicured, the cobbled paths, road and parking areas lit at night. The reconstructed historic windmill beside the pool is a distinctive and attractive focal point. Maid/laundry Service: Towels changed half-weekly, bedding weekly. Cost included. For lets over 2 weeks, available at £15 per week. Apartment cleaned between each booking, but please leave it as you found it. Cost of extra cleaning may be deducted from your security deposit. Winter long lets £500 per month plus cost of electricity, maid/laundry optional at £15 per week.

Relaxing location with great views

Stayed here for 10 days in sept. Great spacious apartment. Liked the terrace in the evenings. Location was great with lovely views from pool/snack bar area. Very relaxing place. My only negative is the walls were quite thin we were woke early every morning with neighbours moving about. I would stay here again.

Excellent apartment, all domestic facilities available, great location, shops, restaurants closeby

Great location, the apartment is well equipped and very clean. Quiet and peaceful area suited us. Easy access to the old town and all other areas. We enjoyed the marina area for walks and the port based fish restaurant was superb, so too is the Windmill restaurant onsite. Pool area is well served by the cafe but one needs to be up early to bag a sun lounger!! So whats new about that ? Anyway my wife and I had a very enjoyable time here and would recommend it highly.

Wonderful place to stay

What a great apartment! There was 4 of us staying there and there was plenty of room for all. 2 balconies (1 a wonderful sun spot) and a large patio meant that there was always space for everyone to do what they wanted. A 30 second walk to a great pool area. 10 minute walk into town. We couldn't have been more thrilled with the accommodation. The owner kept good communication in the build up to our stay and it was all for a reasonable price. I would definitely stay here again.

Great Appartment and complex.

This appartment is in a great elevated position. Very well equipped and comfortable. Everything you needed including washing machine and dishwasher. Tv in the living area only and many English channels including Sky sports. Fridge freezer excellent. Safe provided in the bedroom. Two rear patio areas ( but in full sun from midday so very exposed and hot in full sun) Air - Con available in bedroom for extra charge if you need it. The only watch out is that the elevated position does mean negotiating steep hills if you walk, ( taxi alternative but remember the costs add up during your stay)

Unfortunately, the pool area becomes very busy and the usual "serial sun bed claimers" who claim the beds all day and are missing for 50% of the time spoil the experience. ( maybe the management should display signage preventing the claiming of Beds and then leaving the area)

Bus stop is half way down the hill but this route only takes you to the main station from which you then get other busses. ( Beware, the main station is a long way out of town in this resort)

The apartment would benefit from more local info including the local bus routes and approx charges.

Overall the stay was first class and very enjoyable

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Shame about the sunbeds - there are signs displayed in the pool area requesting guests not to reserve them. I have found printed bus routes and timetables very hard to come by, but will certainly try to add to the information in the guest binder and the supply of maps, leaflets of local attractions and excursions. Thank you for raising this matter.

close yet far enough away

The location was great. Close enough to the vibe of the old town but far enough away that we had peace and quiet when we wanted it. The complex is clean and well maintained. that said, the gardeners and delivery trucks do arrive early and can be noisy. the operators of the restaurant are great !

As for the unit, it was nice. basic and simple. The floors and kitchen were dirty and the cutlery needs to be replaced but otherwise comfortable.

I passed on your comments to the local agent who manages it for me. They replied, "We check the apartment and if anything is not up to standard call the cleaners back." I apologise for your experience and trust it is a one-off. If anything does not meet expectations, please contact the agent straight away. I aim to replace cutlery soon.

Really enjoyed

10 minutes from the old town takes 20 minutes back because of the hills but me and the wife are used to waking hills living in the Rhondda. Reviews said people had trouble finding a sun bed by the pool but we had no trouble at all. The apartment very large and spacious with up stairs bedroom and bathroom very good apartment.

The Algarve has some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Europe, clean and child-friendly. Visit the nearby coves of Sta Maria Luisa, Olhos d'Agua or Sao Rafael with their Algarvian rock formations, or book a boat or coach tour to the Western Algarve for spectacular coastal views. Famous for its all year round climate, sandy beaches, and wonderful golf courses, the Algarve is hard to beat whether you are looking for a warm winter break, a golfing holiday or a family summer holiday.

Travel:

Windmill Hill is 40 km from Faro airport, which is well serviced by budget airlines. Drive time about 30 mins. Taxi transfers typically cost around €40-€50 each way. Pre-booked, return shuttles are available at around £16.00 per person, but journey time may be an hour or so. Transfers can be organised. Car hire, although not essential, is readily available.

Distances:

Albufeira old town and Fishermen's Beach .9 km, Marina .6 km. The Strip, Albufeira new town 4.5 km. Westward, secluded Sao Rafael cove and beach 3.6 km; the ancient seafaring town of Lagos with museums, historic buildings, churches and slave market, plus live entertainment in the square 58.6 km; Sagres popular for surfing and the School of Navigation 87 km. Eastward, Vilamoura with its huge marina and famous golf courses 20.7 km. Book excursions to other varied, characterful destinations.

Further Details:

Cafes, bar, restaurant and supermarket a 5 minute walk downhill. Allow 8 minutes to walk back! Plenty of cafes, bars, restaurants along the 12 minute walk to the Old Town, and several at the Marina a similar distance in the opposite direction.
