Great family property!

  • 5 of 5

We have 3 children (10,8 & 5) and wanted a restful week with almost guaranteed good weather and some good local activities. This fitted the bill perfectly.

We stayed in the Upper School House, which gave us a brilliant veranda overlooking the pool. This meant that we could always have our meals outside as well as always keep our eyes on the kids whilst they were splashing around in the pool.

Carole & Richard were always attentive but not in an encroaching way and the ability to walk 30 seconds down the road to get your fresh croissants every morning was a real bonus.

Activities I would recommend would be the tree top walk (Junior Go Ape-like) at Poltrot as well as the canoeing you can do from Aubeterre.

Thank you Carole & Richard for a great stay and wishing you all the best with your new venture

Owner's Response: Dear Jason and family, Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to review our gites and your holiday. It was lovely to meet you all and have you staying here! Your children were beautifully behaved and an absolute credit to you both! Thank you also for adding your recommendations for local family activities, I'm sure they will be very helpful to other families in the future. I agree the canoeing is a really special day out, and you were certainly more energetic than me, choosing the longer route! We're very grateful for the hard work you put into leaving the Upper School House so clean, neat and tidy - it really does make such a difference, thank you. We really hope that you will re-visit us, a very warm welcome will await you all. With our very best wishes Richard and Carole

Outstanding Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic Holiday in Saint Romain. The Old School House was ideal for the group booking we had. A short walk from Aubeterre with great restaurants, but your not far from beautiful towns and vinyard countyside (Brantome is a must for a gentle Kayak trip) .The Kids loved the lakes with sandy beaches but most of all we all enjoyed coming home for a swim, dinner & the local wine. Carol & Richard are perfect hosts and we thank you for a brilliant break. Mark & Abi.x

Owner's Response: Dear Abi and Mark, Thank you so much for your kind and generous review! We're delighted you and all the members of your party had such a wonderful holiday! It is indeed a very beautiful corner of the world, which we are very pleased you enjoyed so much. There is so much to do in and around Aubeterre but as you say, you don't have to go far to find some charming and quaint alternatives! It was a pleasure to have you all here and we found it worked really well with you all renting the entire complex - we miss you! Thank you once again and hopefully you'll return one day in the not too distant future! With love Carole and Richard

A beautiful place to stay with fantastic hosts

  • 5 of 5

We arrived after a long drive from dieppe to met by the lovely and very friendly Carole and Richard, they showed us around our home for the week, the lower school house, which was beautiful, very clean and homely, just as the photos show. My son decided the single lounge chair was his for the week, and announced that "we need a chair this comfy at home"! The beds were so comfortable we didn't actually manage an early morning until we left, a fabulous restful week for us after a hectic year so far. Carole and Richard were fantastic with our fourteen year old and although we visited out of season and lots of the surrounding activities were closed, they're games room was invaluable. Aubterre definitely deserves its place as one of the top 10 prettiest villages, it is so picturesque and there are fabulous places to eat and drink, including the Brasserie, which serves the most fabulous food in a great atmosphere. Thank you Carole and Richard for a fabulous week, Marcus is already planning his next trip!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind and generous words! It was an absolute delight having you all here and what a genuine and lovely family you are! Marcus is a very well mannered and behaved young man. You should be incredibly proud of him. He's an absolute credit to you both. We're very pleased he felt so at home and particularly enjoyed 'his chair'!! We would love to welcome you all back and really hope next time, Marcus can swim in the pool! Please tell him the horses have continued to enjoy the apples he bought for them! Thank you also for leaving the Gite in such a pristine way! It was a lovely surprise! We hope that our paths may cross again one day! Once again thank you so much for taking the time to offer such a kind review. Best wishes Carole and Richard x

Beautiful house, lovely village, warm welcome

  • 5 of 5

Thanks so much to Carole and Richard for their hospitality. Our short autumn break in this beautiful part of Charente could not have been more ideal. The gites are lovely and really nicely appointed and close access to Aubeterre ensures that even 'out of season' we were able to enjoy drinks and food in nice settings. Good base also for exploring - we managed to take in Perigueux and St Emilion in our few days in the area. Beautiful house, lovely village, warm welcome - highly recommend.

Wonderful property in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in this beautiful property. The owners Carole and Richard are very attentive hosts and provide a warm welcome when on arrival. Stepping into the house you wil be wowed at the attention to detail, the cleanliness and how well equipped it is, many of the original features have been incorporated into the decor. The rooms are very spacious making the house ideal for a family, the bedrooms are well appointed, tastefully decorated and have plenty of storage space. The beds are very comfortable and have lovely fresh bed linen.

There is a wonderful shaded terrace running the length of the house, overlooking the pool, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a family meal.

The house is located in an area of France that has lots of activities and pretty towns to visit, and if you are a wine lover you're not far from St. EmIlion or area of Margaux. The local markets are worth a visit , and there is a variety of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes, they are very family friendly.

Don't forget to order your croissants in the near by shop to collect fresh the next morning, they are gorgeous.

In conclusion we enjoyed a fantastic week, Carole and Richard ensure you have a wonderful stay, nothing is too much trouble and they have great local knowledge. We will be back. Thank you so much.

Beautiful property in a pretty village location

  • 5 of 5

My husband, myself and our dog, had a very enjoyable 3 week stay in the Upper School House during October.

The property is very tastefully decorated, comfortable and well equipped. Even the bed is comfortable!

The pool was spotlessly clean and the “pool attendant” is obviously dedicated to his job. Good job Richard! It was slightly too cold to use when we were there but sure it would be lovely in the summer months.

The house is in a lovely village where all the locals are very friendly. We often walked to Aubeterre which only took about 15 minutes and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are 2 restaurants within walking distance of the “School House”, unfortunately we did not get the chance to try them but the menus looked good and seemed reasonably priced. The local shop stocks a wide range of goods, but the opening hours seem flexible, normalament!

There are so many places to explore without having to travel too far which makes this such an ideal holiday location – Brantome, La Jamaye, numerous small typically French villages, river beaches and lakes. Bordeaux and Bergerac are only about an hour’s drive away.

Carole and Richard are perfect hosts, always there for help and advice but never intrusive. They are always happy to suggest places to visit and help with reservations if required.

We look forward to staying again soon.
