Two bedroomed high specification apartment with a large amount of floor space within a complex of five apartments,set within beautiful upper and courtyard gardens. The other four apartments are single bedroomed and can be seen at property reference P9748.

There is a swimming pool and a large barbecue of typical Portuguese design in the upper garden.

The apartments are fully centrally heated and available for all year round use. Three of the apartments have typical Portuguese log burners.

Cumieira is a typical working village in a rural setting of about 200 people. In the village itself you will find a 16th century Mother Church, a junior and infant school, a day centre, a cemetery, a cultural centre, and a bar that knocks up a three course lunch for €7.00

We are a comfortable 50 minutes drive from some of the best beaches on the West coast. Our location is rural but certainly not isolated and we are only a 5 minute drive from Avelar, for supermarkets, hot food takeaways, a hospital, post office, restaurants, pharmacy, hairdressers, beauty saloons and essentially all things associated with everyday living. The historic town of Penela is a 15 minute drive, as is Ansiao.

We are within 30 minutes drive from major railway stations at Coimbra B and Pombal….Train or road journeys to either Porto or Lisbon are achievable within two hours, The historic cities of Tomar, Fatima and Coimbra are more like 30 minutes.

There are exciting water theme parks in both Pombal and Castenheira de Pera, both can be reached within a 30 minute car journey.

The area is blessed with many rivers and river beaches (Praia Fluvials) and more information on these is available within the apartments.

Relatively inexpensive family orientated restaurants, exist in abundance in this part of Portugal and can make regular dining out an enjoyable part of your stay with us.Again there is plenty of information about these in the apartments and we are only to happy to advise and assist with the language, booking of taxi's etc.

There is no problem with availability of safe parking for the apartments. Also although we always advise guests to be careful with their possessions during their stay,the apartments exist within a gated and secure environment.

If you are looking for a group or large family holiday, our apartments are perfect for this as they give you both the opportunity to be together and to be independent.

We are happy to negotiate on rates when three or more apartments are booked for your group/family for the same weeks.

About the Owner

Having had an affinity with Portugal for several decades, buying a property and living there, was very definitely at the top of our wish list.

The idea of actually building a business there really evolved rather than forming part of some master plan.

As I had worked as a Building contractor for many years specialising in the renovation, extension and refurbishment of houses and gardens, I was able to put these acquired skills and knowledge to good use when I bought the disused and run down former working farmhouse, that is now Apartamentos e jardims de Florenca.

Of course working in a new country without knowledge of the language,working practices, different materials, planning and local council approvals etc, was to prove challenging, but nevertheless they were challenges to be overcome.

All the renovation and remodelling works carried out on the property was by local tradesmen, who I have to say were a pleasure to work with.

Staying with us here in Cumieira provides you with the opportunity to enjoy our apartments and gardens in comfort, but to also absorb the easy going nature of typical Portuguese rural village life.

This is a wonderfully comfortable place to stay.

We loved how tastefully decorated everything is and we particularly loved the sunny garden.

We used the property as a base for exploring the area, visiting Coimbra, Leiria,Oporto, the ruins at Conimbriga and the coast at Sao Pedro de Moel.

The drive through the endless pine forest west of Leiria was an amazing surprise.We also spent the day in Lisbon: a two hour drive, but well worth it.

The best restaurant that we found is 'O terrier do Lagar,in Cabeca Redondo (a five minute drive from the apartment)which is very reasonably priced but serves delicious simply prepared meat and fish with excellent wine.

Our host Shirley was extremely kind and attentive.

When we started to look for a property of our own in this part of Portugal, the one that we bought was the very first one that we downloaded from the internet and although we looked at a few more, it was very much a question of love at first site. We loved the feeling of space, the beautiful views and the simplistic way of live in this small village of 200 or so. Somehow we instantly knew that we had to buy this run down ramble-shack of a Farmhouse, as it offered so much potential and take up the challenge of restoring it into something that could also be shared with others.

Coast/Beach:

Some of the best beaches on the West coast of Portugal are within an hours comfortable drive from the apartments.

The area is also blessed with many rivers and river beaches (Praia Fluvials). Information and some travel directions are listed within the general information sheets we provide in the apartments and we are always happy to advise and assist.

Although we are based in a peaceful rural location we are not isolated and we are literally minutes from major road and railway links.

Travel:

The use of a car is essential for your holiday and car hire is best arranged in advance for collection at the airports. Cumieira is almost to the kilometre equal distance from either Porto or Lisbon airports…. Travelling to the apartments is largely very easy, mainly motorway and takes two hours.We supply guests with easy to follow travel instructions.

Distances:

Supermarkets, shops and all the necessities of everyday life, can be found in Avelar, which is a 5 minute drive from your apartment.There are other shops, larger supermarkets and weekly markets at Ansiao, Penela, Pombal and Miranda de Cova,where public libraries and indoor heated swimming pools are to be found. Travelling times to these are within 20-30 minutes. There are many excellent beaches within an hours drive, as are historic places of interest such as Tomar, Fatima and Coimbra.

If you so desire, a holiday in central Portugal offers you a much more than a beach and swimming pool experience. It is a part of Europe very rich in history and religious and historical architecture and we urge you to spend a little time researching all of the wonderful information on so many places of interest within easy travelling time from the apartments, that you will find on the internet.For the very best local information for places of interest simply google Penela tourist route and you will get some first class information.

We are situated within a 30 minute drive from either Pombal or Coimbra B train stations. From here you can get direct connections to either Lisbon or Porto, as well as Coimbria Fatima and Aveiro. Trains are fairly frequent, fast and relatively inexpensive and can provide a welcome alternative to 'sticky' car journeys, getting lost in traffic looking for a parking space etc. The train stations at both Porto and Lisbon for example have fast Metro links into the centre of the cities where you can begin your sightseeing trip.Car parking spaces at either Pombal or Coimbra B for your outward journey are plentiful and free.

Another fine feature of this part of Portugal is river beaches (Praia Fluvials) and there are many near the apartments. The closest is called Fragas de Sao Simao and is a 20 minute drive up into the mountains stopping off and parking (free) at a EU sponsored observation post whilst you take in the spectacular views of the terrain, gorges and waterfalls. Continue your journey downhill to the wonderfully crystal clear spring water pools, which are safe for you to use albeit rather chilly.

For those amongst you that have never been to this part of Portugal before you are in for a pleasant surprise. Firstly, the people are genuinely very friendly and tend to see and treat you like one of their own, rather than a tourist or outsider. Next, unlike other holiday destinations you may have been to, there is no difficulty whatsoever in dining out and eating genuine local cuisine, there are not any tourist restaurants. You will also find here amazing value for money.

  • Notes on accommodation: The accommodation offered on this and our other apartments within the same complex (see our other advert on property reference P9748) is of high quality and we have attempted to tick all of the boxes. As we have a number of apartments within the same complex, we are able to cater for individual couples or for group and family bookings for people that want to holiday together, but also maintain their own space. We have fast fibre optic wi-fi which is free to our guests anywhere within the complex. Each apartment has flat screen satellite televisions some with free view and sky sports channels.All apartments have dvd players and radio/cd players. There are also a large number of books and cd's that you are welcome to read and play. Outside: As can be seen from various photographs, there are two gardens. The upper garden is where the swimming pools is located and also a large barbecue of traditional Portuguese design and a dining area is sited. There is a combination of paved areas around the pool and lawned areas suitable for soft play. There are a number of garden table and chair sets spread around as well as sun loungers and recliners. The lower 'Courtyard' garden has a gazebo with a dining table and chairs for 6 settings.There is also a bistro table and chairs outside apartment 4 and a portable barbecue. Outside apartment 3 (see our other advert on property ref: P9748) there is your own private sun terrace complete with outside dining and relaxing table and chairs and another barbecue. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are included in the price.Bed linen is changed weekly as are towels, although more frequently on request. The apartment is cleaned weekly during your stay. The apartment is equipped with implements for your own occasional cleaning. Other: The lounge/reception room is 'L' shaped and incorporates a formal dining area with 6 settings.There is a large wall mounted satellite television. There are two large black leather sofa's and a bookcase with a vast selection of books and cd's for your use.
